I was looking all over the forum for mentions of new artists and I decided to help consolidate them all in one place by creating a thread for them here.
If you have discovered a new (or just new to you) artist, or know an artist that deserves better recognition, tell us about him/her/them here.
I'll begin by mentioning someone I just stubled across:
Vienna Teng. If you like Norah Jones, Tori Amos, and Sarah McLachlan, I'd give her a listen.
She was on NPR as i was driving back from work, i would have normally switched channels but stuck to the interview when cisco systems was mentioned, she is an ex cisco-ite and i consult there.....
the songs played in the npr show were quiet good, i remember the lullaby that was featured in the show...i guess i will buy her CD in the near future.....
I really enjoy celtic music or any group influenced by celtic music, they sound great on axiom as they have a rich midrange.....
Dreamcatcher by secret garden is one album i would recommend [ sorry peter , am deviating from the subject i guess ]
If Celtic music with some punk (uh, lots of punk) influence sounds appealing to you -- kind of the Clash meets the Pogues meets the Chieftains -- try Dropkick Murphys. They're not exactly "new" artists, since they have 5-6 CDs, but they're not well known yet outside their mainstay Boston-area and Irish diaspora audiences.
I recommend the "Blackout" CD. The two full downloads available from
the "Blackout" page on their Website are great examples of their stuff.
What if you hate Tori Amos but love Sarah McLachlan?
if you hate Tori but love Sarah don't listen to Nine Inch Nails.
Try Patricia Barber and Norah Jones.
then i'd file you under "eclectic"

I'm familiar with Eno and enjoy his style, but Jaxx was too gay night-clubby for me. Having been to a gay night club, I feel I can say that. (A friend dragged me into one in San Fancisco -- and she implied that refusing showed that I was uncomforable with my own sexuality. What choice did I have?
)
The others are not my style, but I could give them a chance if convinced to.
OK...how about this? If you like Portishead...give this a shot. It's pretty cool. Hell, it's less than $2 bucks!

"One Thing" starts off a little slow, but give it a chance.
The rest of the songs are a little harder.
Real80sman, good tip on Fingereleven - Bones & Joints is my personal favorite. Here's a few other interesting bands I've uncovered in the last couple of years:
Apples in Stereo - a quirky little indie pop-rock band
The Fiery Furnaces - some good ole chick punk with a liberal dose of garage rock
Godspeed You Black Emperor - think Sigur Ros - if you can wrap your head around newer Radiohead, it may be time for a greater challenge
Me First and the Gimme Gimmes - pop hits/tv theme songs/showtunes given a punk dressup
The New Pornographers - a Vancouver indie-rock supergroup!?!?
the Von Bondies - they aren't much of a secret since Jack White beat up their lead singer (I think he may have been nervous - might be a new garage rock king)
A lot of these are pretty well known already, but worth checking out if you haven't!

I also do love Norah, especially the multi Grammy winner cd, really deserve it, but I buy the dvd concert, I was kind ‘da let down. She should hook up with excellent musicians, not just good musicians, tho, the sound of the dvd is super good.
Has anyone had heard that 16 years old girl from Britain that sings blues?... can’t recall her name, kind of looks like Janis Joplin but prettier

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are a LOT of fun to listen to. They do great fast punk covers of such songs as Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl", Elton John's "Rocket Man", and the Pretenders "I'm Gonna Be" (a.k.a. I Would Walk 500 Miles).

The Joss Stone CD is quite good - lyrics aren't, but singing, music, and quality are good, worth the purchase. If she doesn't burn and fade she could be become good.

Excellent hard rock/metal. Very similar to Alice in Chains, with a lot of texture. I just got their new CD (available only through their website, for 8 bucks, including shipping! And they gave me a signed poster!), and it blows me away. Great stuff, well thought out. Sounds fantastic on my Senns.

have you had a chance to check out Inward Eye yet? They've been yapping about them on 97 for weeks now (of course they never seem to play anything by them). Wheeler said yesterday if they're not the biggest band in Canada in 5 years he was going to quit. Not sure if they'll be that successful, but everyone insists they're going a long way.
Last night I saw
Josh Ritter live at
Cafe du Nord, a small intimate club in San Francisco. He was absolutely amazing! I highly encourage everyone to give him a listen.
Did I mention that his albums sound great on Axioms?
Cool. Haven't been to Cafe Du Nord but I'm definitely a fan of the smaller venue. (Perhaps because of old age?) I like seeing Julia Fordham at Bimbo's and have seen Everthing but the Girl (before they got all techno) at Slim's. You can definitely get a better sense of the artist's ability in those types of places.
So true. In a small venue, there's nowhere to hide.
I'm going to avoid large venues for the most part from now on. The Ritter concert only set me back $8 and was one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Josh Ritter and the other 3 members of his band were mingling with the crowd before the show and during the opening act. You got the sense that the band was a bunch of real people having the time of their lives.
Compare that to spending $50, $60, or even $75 on an arena concert for the privilege trying to listen to the show while drunken a-holes smash the crap out of each other in mosh pits... Then again, some girls like to flash their boobs while sitting atop their boyfriend's shoulders at these concerts...
Peter, you have an internet connection and are concerned with seeing boobies at a concert?!

On the lighter side, fans of The Beatles and/or Metallica should definitely check out
Beatallica for a good laugh.
Unfortunatley, the MP3s are currently offline and the only way to download tracks is by using BitTorrent.
Two heartfelt recommendations are
- The String Quartet Tribute to Coldplay: the name says it all. It's the best string tribute I've heard- really well done and has a life of its own. Disclaimer: I do like Coldplay.
- Rilo Kiley, "The Execution of All Things": A wonderful Indy artist doing a great album. A friend thinks they sound a bit like Veruca Salt or The Postal Service (also a good Indy band)- I think they just sound good.
Not even a remotely new band, but the new Blondie disc is out in North America now...

CG footage? There's... a total of 5 secs of CG in the thing, give or take... everything but the pan of the shacks is a real set, built at a performance art gallery here.

Umm.. nope... and I have the scientific backing of the production stills and first hand complaints from the band and director (side note - he was the 2D/3D Lighting Coordinator on X-Men 2) on working in the enclosed spaces.
I was on-set for the last vid, but didn't have time to take a run down for this one.
Reminds me of Tom Petty's "Don't Come Around Here No More" winning best special effects... there were no special effects used - just big sets and props.

Franz Ferdinand who are kind of a White Stripes/Strokes garage/new rock mix.
Powderfinger is a good ole' fashioned rock band who aren't new, but really aren't all that well known outside of homeland Australia. Also fans of Coldplay should check out
Snow Patrol.

To toss a couple more recommendations out there,
Rilo Kiley and Shivaree are both rather awesome, though Shivaree's latest is only available in Europe.
If I was a betting man, Rilo Kiley would be at the top of my list for 'future music superstars', and that in a good way.

The band is releasing a new CD this summer, so there'll hopefully be another tour soon.
The Sun says Powderfinger is on Tuesday @ Silverado's. They described them as the Tragically Hip of Australia, really popular there but unable to break in the U.S. I'd go, but I'm already headed into the 'Peg Wednesday night for the Distillers.
Sid, you said you are heading into the peg on wednesday. Where do you live? I'm in Selkirk at the moment but will probably be looking for a house in the south end in the next 6 months.

That's part of the reason we're so tough John, it's the extremes we have to put up with. I'm sure we'll see plenty of days in July & August that are +100 F with 90%+ humidity. But man, what I wouldn't give for a couple of days like that right now.
