I currently have M22ti's for fronts and am getting a VP100 I was thinking for surrounds to get the M2's and for a rear center getting a QS8. I was also just considering getting the QS4 for rears and a M2 for the rear center. Does anyone have any input on either of these set-ups. This will be used for both full surround audio and HT. My romm is about 2600 cf.
thx

Well...assuming that you're going for the HT setup of 6.1 here I'd suggest QS8s for the sides and M2s for the rear. But that's just my opinion. I'm sure others will chime in Good luck...with Axiom,it's all good.

Alamoe,
I'm sure the consensus on the board will be that since there is very little 6.1 or 7.1 material available on DVD, purchase only the surrounds for now. You can use the extra money you save to get a pair of QS8s for surrounds and help you avoid "upgraditis" (which you may eventually fall victim to if you purchase the QS4 - though these are very competent speakers). The QS8s are certainly the pick of the litter for home theater and are no slouch for multi-channel audio. Down the road, you may want to add an extra pair of direct-firing rear speakers (such as the M2) but for now, save yourself the money. If you want some backup on this, Spiffnme may chime in. He had rear speakers in his setup (for 7.1, or was it 6.1?) and finding them under-whelming, removed them.

Once again I can say all this not actually owning a pair of QS8s....

I am a strong proponent of qs4's or qs8's for side surrounds, and M2's for rears. True, the rear channels are not used much for movies, but multichannel music, which the poster said he was interested in, sounds much better, in my experience, when the surround channels are coming from direct radiators rather than the qs's. Just make sure that you can direct the surround channels from your DVD-A/SACD player to the rear channels of your receiver.

I'm with Sid on this one. QS4 or QS8's in the surround position, and if you must have those extra channels in the rear, M2i.

Good luck.

If 6.1 I'd go with all QS4's. I'm sure that I read somewhere that if a directional speaker, is placed behind the listener, the sound will appear to come from the front.

If 7.1 go with QS4's on the sides, M2s for the rear.

FordPrefect,

Yes, you are correct. Because of the way our external pinnae are shaped (that's the outer ear, and no smart remarks!) and focused, and the psycho-acoustics of hearing, if you are going to add extra channels on the rear wall, it's preferable to use two, and space them apart, rather than a single speaker.

In short, do 5.1 or 7.1.
