okay, I am still confused. If the qs8 is supposed to be slightly behind the listening area, why wouldnt the wall that is slightly behind the listening area(where current surrounds are)be sufficient? Just trying to make sure there are no other options since ceiling mounting is a major endeavor for me. My family room only has 3 walls and is open to the kitchen where the 4th wall would be. If someone has any other mounting suggestions, I would appreciate it. I can be reached at 704-507-9360. HELP!!

I'm assuming that when you say "the wall that is slightly behind the listening area" you mean mounting them on the back wall of the room. If so, That WOULD be sufficient. It would just be better to mount them on the side walls because of the directions the drivers fire. But mounting them on the wall behind would work.

Unless one has a room specifically dedicated to HT/music, nearly all of us have to make some compromise in speaker placement due to physical restrictions of the room, or furniture, or the WAF/SAF factor. Don't agonize over it. Just give it your best shot. The QS8s are pretty darn forgiving when it comes to placement.

I live in a studio (a small one in San Francisco) and have the QS8s mounted about 3 feet above sitting position on the wall behind the seats (at most one foot from the chairs). It's not perfect and does not fit what Dolby labs recommends, but they still do an amazing job of enveloping me and my guest/s in a realistic sound field.

I think a note everyone misses here is there's a huge gap between "ideal", "best practise" and "real world".

A man could go crazy pursuing the ideal.

Ditto James R, except it's a living room in Puyallup rather than a studio in SF. I've got my QS8's on the back wall and am delighted with the results.

Well said Bren. And, most importantly, nobody from the placement police is going to show up at your door and haul your a** off to jail if you don't have them in the "ideal." place.

Funny. I had a dream about that once.... For my transgressions, I was forced to endure a Bose Wave Radio set to a local smooth jazz station in my 6'x10' cell. The shoddy sound reproduction coupled with the hard cement walls made for a tortuous 5 weeks, let me tell you.

The bastards even put the radio in a locked box so I couldn't turn it off or bash it to pieces.

I had the same problem with the 4th wall not existing & opening into the kitchen area. Because of factors such as room decor & obstructions - wall & cieling mounting was either too laborious or not practical.

Because my room could blend speakers well near the sofa, I used adjustable stands rated for 10lb speakers and they work like a charm( back mounted of course). Cool thing is my wife doesn't notice them & they sound good despite the fact that are only 5" above my ear. You could always be in the eternal persuit for audio perfection, but I reasoned that if it sounds good, stick with it until another option opens up.

For me going from crappy Bose speakers to Axioms, the most jacked up placement would be an improvement over what I had.

good luck!

Peter,

I've passed your name on to the pp and your dream is about to come true. Booga Booga!

Peter, your dream was a reflection of reality. That's the prescribed penalty in the Criminal Code for such a transgression. On several occasions I've requested that the court impose the full penalty.
