Posted By: JSkip I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 12/17/04 12:34 PM
Soon after I received my speakers in January, I was notified my job was being eliminated. I therefore put a hold on buying more toys.

I promised myself that I would finally buy the subwoofer when I got a new job. Well, that time is now!!! Yesterday I accepted a new job with a small medical device firm in New Hope, PA.

Sooooo, which sub will it be. It doesn't take a genius to figure out it'll be HSU (is it pronounced "Sue"?) or SVS (which I guess is pronounced "S-V-S")

I have a large room so it will probably be the STF-3 or the PB12-ISD. Like many things, I'm sure I'd be very happy with either one. Without over-analyzing this, an obvious difference is the HSU fires down into the carpet and the SVS fires down into a base plate. Is there much of a difference?

Thanks

Congratulations on th ejob John - what a poetic name for this new opportunity. As far as the sub goes, either works (I prefer SVS). I don't know what "large room" means, but that doesn't really matter. Set aside an hour and call both HSU (yes - "sue") and SVS and talk to them. They''ll walk you through some questions and ask about things you may not have considered. You may even be surprised to find you can get a smaller sub.
You really need to hear both if possible. If you can't do that, flip a coin. You'll get just as many people suggesting SVS as you will Hsu. (I'm in the Hsu camp.)

No advice on the subs. Just wanted to say New Hope is a neat little town. Kinda touristy in that it has one main street with a number of shops running along it that sell all kinds of things. No idea how it is to live there, but I've been through a few times and it seems like a nice little place.

The office I will be working out of is in a strip mall. They are actually old warehouses that were renovated. It's a neat place.
JSKIP! cn you get both there this weekend if i come down then i could make my decision too.lol

I would have tried until I saw the NY Giants helmet on your posting. Tomorrow would be good we can watch Eli get killed by the Steelers. That will almost be cruel and unusual punishment. I should talk, my Rams are playing more like the old LA Lambs.
Posted By: Ray3 Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 12/18/04 03:02 AM
From a Steeler's perspective, that would be "normal and usual treatment". . I smell a hijack on the horizon.

Yes, John, glad to hear of your new job; congratulations.
want Warner Back?!?!?!
Posted By: JSkip Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 12/18/04 02:41 PM
He's better than Chris Chandler. Hell, I'm better than Chris Chandler!!! I never thought I'd miss Warner and Marc Bulger!!
Yeah and kurt probably never thought he would miss the rams lol
where does Velodyne fit in comparison to HSU & SVS? i think would lean toward a sub that was moe accurate than loud at this point any thoughts which would be considered the more accurate? Thanks
Posted By: JSkip Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 12/28/04 06:28 PM
Is there any significance to the fact that the subs recommended here (SVS, HSU and sometimes Outlaw) are all downfiring subs?

Yes, I will beat this to death before I make my decision!!
nope

Posted By: md55 Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 12/28/04 07:14 PM
Sonically it doesn't matter. Depending on your circumstances a downfiring sub may be easier to place in a corner. I choose the Outlaw based on price/performance and dimensions because of limited placement options in my room. I liked not having to worry about the 11 year old having another driver to kick a ball into, or the teanager messing around showing off to his friends.
And after yesterday, I know I'm not going to miss him NEXT year! ( Still cannot believe the Giants signed that Mope!
Anyway, I'm on the Sub Hunt as well, and was wondering why all of the talk here about Subs centers on the HSU and V-something, and not the Subs from Axiom? I'm leaning towards the EP 500 right now, but that was simply due to reading the reviews online, and a growing desire not to have to drag my ass all over the internet looking at other brands and doing the endless comparisons. Are these other subs that you are talking about quite a bit better for the money, or just as good for a lot less money? I must admit that I am less and less fond of trying to sort through all of the damn choices out there! Choices are wonderful, but when there are as many as there are now with the Web, they can also be Paralyzing! Heck, it took me weeks to narrow my choices for the mains down to the M60's and I am certainly not interested in sorting through the World Wide Web all over again for a sub!
Interestedin your responses...

yeah Eli looked pretty good yesterday i was at the game and it was fun to watch (for once). I have narrowed my search for a sub down to axiom ep350 or outlaw lfm1 (both =$)i like the the fact that the axiom will match color wise. but do you guys think that if i get the ep350 and dont hear the other one it will be one of those situations where i will think i made the best choice, or do you think i will know im lacking.
Posted By: JSkip Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 12:06 AM
In the $600 price range, it is generally agreed that the SVS and HSU (and the Outlaw LFM-1) give you a bigger bang for buck over the Axiom EP-350. The EP500 and EP600 are in another price bracket (and out of my budget).

The Axioms will give you matching speakers and I am sure most people will be happy with their performance.

Since I won't demo all the subs, it'll be either the SVS PB12-ISD or the HSU STF-3. I honestly don't think I can go wrong. If you put a gun to my head now, it's the SVS by a nose.

I was just reading some threads on another forum, and the attitude of the SVS people (and I mean employees/owners, not just fan-boys) REALLY turned me off. Talking trash on forums about your competetion is just un-cool. Much like Axiom, and Hsu...let your products to the talking.

Uncool

Spiff
That thread gave me a headache.
If you havent read it. It goes something like this.....WHA wah wha wah..wah wha wah wha wa wa wa wa.
The biggest offender on that thread was actually a SVS retailer. (www.plasmadocs.com) I visited their site, and was sad to see Axiom on there. Clicking on their Axiom link I got...

Our relationship is currently one of referral and mutual packaging. Please contact us for details on the Axiom line. Click on the Axiom banner on our website for the entire line...

The way Dr. Anthony Rosalia conducted himself on that forum reflects very poorly on Axiom, or any company that would deal with him. (IMHO)

If I didn't know what a terrific company Axiom was, seeing them linked with plasmadocs.com would certainly leave me with a bad first impression.

I am in total agreement. Car salesmen are not even that bad.....the actually respect competitive products.

If you read the thread, you can see I posted in there about some subwoofer history.
Posted By: Wid Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 02:12 AM
When I was looking to buy a new sub I did contact SVS about buying one of their subs.I was also reading the mentioned thread,it was the attitude of the SVS people from the thread that helped me make my up my mind.I went with HSU again.
Posted By: Ajax Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 03:43 AM
I read the thread this morning, and was disgusted by Rosalia's posting. His first post was blatant commercialism, and his second was insulting to Dr. HSU. He must be new to forum posting, because he sure hasn't learned how to behave.

However, I don't think you should indict SVS for his behavior, any more than one should indict HSU for the behavior of the HSU fanboys, who can be just as insulting and unreasonable as Rosalia (Disclaimer: I do NOT categorize Spiff and Curtis as fanboys. They are HSU fans, and that's quite a different animal.)

I notice that Plasmadocs.com is also carrying Ascend speakers, and not only that, they're paired in a package with.....................yup, an SVS sub.. Now THAT'S weird.
Jack, I haven't read through the thread since it was "active", so maybe it has been edited, but did you see the at least one degrading remark from TV in regards to "competitors"?

While I hold most doctors in high regard just for the amount of education they have to endure, that Dr. Rosalia(a pediatrician) gets no respect from me...basicly because he thinks he deserves it. Also, I didn't think pediatricians knew more about audio than the next person.

There are good fanboys, and there are bad fanboys......
Posted By: Wid Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 04:24 AM
Jack,

While I do agree there are die hard fanboys in both camps it seems to me one camp spits out quite a bit more venom than the other.I don't agree with either side when putting down another person for what brand they prefer.

I am NOT talking about anyone here on THIS forum. Here it is nice that everyone respects each other for what ever brand of speakers or subs they like.
Posted By: Ajax Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 04:30 AM
Oh you'll get no argument from me about TV's defensive and insulting posting. I'm more puzzled by him than I am by Rosalia. All he has to do is shut up and let his product do the talking.

My point is that I would not belittle a product based on the idiotic behavior of someone who runs the company or some overzealous fanboys. If we're going to do that, we're going to have to belittle EVERY company, because every company has it's idiotic supporters, be they owners or not. (Axiom is the exception, of course )

We agree on fanboys. We just use different terminology. To me, there are no "good" fanboys. The term "fanboy" is inherently negative. I refer to a good "fanboy" as a "fan."
in total agreement with you Jack.

by the way....this is the ONLY forum that has persuaded me to by a product in less than 3 days!

Oh you're such a pushover, Curtis. Are you liking that MX-700? I've actually been thinking of buying a second one while they're still available, and stashing it away in case anything goes wrong with my current one. The new "consumer" models don't attract me, and the new "pro" models are expensive. Needless to say, I love my MX-700
Yes...I am liking it very much! There are some more macros I want to attempt.

BTW....I did an "update" to the new version of the editor, and the app started crashing. I had to revert to the older version...no problems.

The new consumer models are not computer programmable, right? That MX-850 is nice...but I do no need the extra capability....yet.....and it is expensive. I have actually been thinking about getting the sidekick.
MaxF saw it for what it is, a marketing attempt by Doctor Anthony Rosalia.
Posted By: Ajax Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 05:17 AM
If you find the sidekick anywhere, please let me know (after you order yours, of course ). I've had a hard time finding it. I've found it here, and here. But I don't know anything about these vendors, and would not be surprised if they actually didn't have any in stock. The latter lists only one in stock, but it's more expensive than the former. I'd call before ordering to be sure they have them in stock.

Didn't realize there was a new version of the Editor. Is it only for the new models?
Posted By: Ken.C Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 05:24 AM
Well, if anyone ever decides to upgrade to the new models, PM me. I have a feeling I won't be able to afford the MX700 before it becomes unavailable...
I was going to try eBay.

Yeah....I actually got an email about the new version, and did the update as instructed. After that, whenever I tried to save a macro in the editor...it crashed.
>>by the way....this is the ONLY forum that has persuaded me to by a product in less than 3 days!

If you're ever in the market for a telescope, check out the Stellarvue forum on Yahoo. Stellarvue is the only other company I have seen in the same league as Axiom in terms of product quality and customer "passion", although I imagine Onix is pretty close.

3 days and you'll be buying a telescope even if you never wanted one

There's a flag on the play....15 yards personal foul, hijacking.

I don't take some of the BS from other forums too seriously. As some other people have stated, every company has idiots employed or has idiot supporters. In my search to date, the HSU and SVS reps have been extremely helpful. In fact, the SVS guy (I think his name is Eric) apologized for not responding within 24 hours. To make it up to me, he offered to send me an SVS shirt with my order.

Both companies have been very patient with all of my stupid questions regarding sub size and location.
Posted By: Ajax Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 04:09 PM
Absolutely spot on, John. It's so easy to dwell on the idiots because they're so vocal and visible. But, the fact is, they're in the minority, and unfortunately overshadow the vast majority of employees and supporters, who are basically kind and considerate.

So many of these internet companies have raised the bar when it comes to customer service, and, like the SVS guy you mentioned, are worthy of our praise.
Posted By: Ray3 Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 05:12 PM
John - Eric's name comes up very often in SVS conversations. Interesting how that whole Customer Care thing works for everybody and pays dividends to the company.

Jack & Curtis - the 700 will likely go away before too long and the 850 is a bit more expensive. However, it won't be long before we start seeing the 850 at open box prices. I am also torn about getting another 700, but I think I'll likely just wait and get the 850 in a few months and retire the 700 to the den setup, where my wife is currently undergoing frustration therapy caused by the array of remotes in that room. The only real differences between the 700 and 850 are 1) better thumb pad (who cares), 2) bundled the old 700 & 800 to allow for an optional RF capability and 3) higher price.

So is the sidekick a remote for a remote???
Posted By: Ajax Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 06:01 PM
Kinda. It's a very simple companion remote which can be programmed for simple operation by those who are technically challenged.
Posted By: bray Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 06:12 PM
Seems like someone has said that the MX700 isnt Mac compatable. Is that true?
thought I'd stop in and say "I'm on my way to Vegas, I'm on my way to Vegas!" For CES of course.

Oh....the software for the MX-700 editor only runs in Windows.
i just went to check out the CES website. looks like some pretty cool stuff. make sure and pick-up some good freebies!!

Curtis, we expect some major reportage. If you get a chance, take a look at the new Denon DVD-5910.
Posted By: Ray3 Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 08:19 PM
bray, the only mac solution is using the Windows emulator (I don't remember its name). On th eother hand, if you have access to a PC at owrk, this thing can be set up in an hour or two. After set up, its a matter of minor tweaks that can be done manually, or the addition of a new component which can be done added at work.
Posted By: bray Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 08:50 PM
I live in a mac world, at work and home, but I do have a few friends with those other machines.

Posted By: Ray3 Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/04/05 10:11 PM
I envy your total Mac existence. I use a PC at work and have a Mac at home. SInce my wife dominates the Mac during the school year (2nd grade teacher), I need a second computer, so I went (shudder) to the dark side & got a PC for the den. Works pretty well & I get the best (and worst) of both worlds.
Posted By: JSkip Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/05/05 12:24 AM
For those of you who remember the initial topic of this thread, it was me asking which sub to buy. I will ask no more!!! I just ordered an SVS PB12-ISD sub!!!!!

It should be here on Friday. God help me for asking this next question....what type of cable should I get??

John
Don't spend too much on a cable. Blue Jeans sells cable that will work perfectly. I'd recommend their middle-grade subwoofer cable (Belden 1505F). You can get 15 feet for $20.50.

Good Luck John. Let me know how it sounds. I do find it humorous that about 10 post ago you made a comment about your thread being hijacked. noone even noticed or cared they just kept rambling on without an apology or concern for your quest. anyway i think im decided on the ep350 maybe when i get mine we can a/b test them and help other people decide with some direct comparison reviews. Though that might put a hole in my i wont know what im missing theory.
Good for you John! I hope you will enjoy your new sub, and that you will report back with your experiences.
Posted By: Ray3 Re: I got a new job, so which sub do I buy???? - 01/05/05 01:33 AM
John / Jacob - excellent choices. You must absolutely get those things in one room and make your ears bleed. When you regain consciousness, let us know how they compare.
