My Denon AV receiver gets a little warm some times when I've been playing CD's at, shall we say, elevated levels. I don't quite have the cooling space needed. Does anyone know were I can get a little fan that I could use to help this minor problem?

i have a denon, too. perhaps i may help. i have a few questions:

1 - do you leave a good 8-12 inches of space above it a 2-3 inches on the side? if not, try that.
2 - is the room it's in very hot?
3 - are you running your speakers on the large setting? this make it send more juice to the speakers, thus increasing heat.
4 - are you powering low impedence speakers? i power 4 ohm M80's and 6 ohm VP150 & QS8's, so that also creates more heat.

I have been running my denon like this for a couple of months - M80's (4ohm speakers) on large (i have no sub) and i haven't had a problem, and i have a low end denon 1602.

try the suggestions, see if they help
good luck

I dont think a little warm is going to be a problem.
I have very little breathing space around mine and have had no problems with shut-down.
I had a small fan hooked up to the back of my cabinet and it really worked well, but it was VERY loud, so I took it off. I did see some on e-bay that were built for this purpose that were supposed to be silent. I'll post a link later when I get home.

I don't have the option of more cooling space without bying a new equipment stand. So that is out for now. I have about 4-5 in. above and only about 1 in. on the sides.

I'm running M50's set to large on a 1950. I don't have a sub.

It has only shut down on me once or twice after a long time of listening at high levels. If I just give it a rest for about 10-15 minutes after 3 or 4 CD's I don't have a problem. I just thought that some one has seen something like a small computer cooling fan that runs of of a standard wall outlet.

Thanks for the input.

Does the Denon have a fan of its own ? If not, one thing that might help is raising the reciever up an inch or so. It would give you less clearance at the top but more clearance at the bottom so I *think* you would get more overall airflow.

The other thing that would help (if you haven't already done it) would be making sure there are no lips to trap a pocket of warm air. The ideal would be if you could remove any lips at the rear but keep a lip at the front so the air flows out in one direction. The big thing you want to do is minimize turbulence so the air flows smoothly... (or, as you say, a hefty fan works well too ).

I use one of these on my external hard drives and have been very satisfied.

It's a bit pricey, but tilts down a bit and on it's slower speeds it's just completely silent.

Hey Don,

When I first got my denon, i had the same problem. I used a 120 volt fan off of the SCR cooling fins in an old VFD (variable frequency drive) from work. They could probably be bought at any electrical wholesaler in your area. It shouldn't be that expensive.

You might even be able to find an "old" one at your work. ( there's probably alot of electronics on a plane.)

But once I set up my entertainment stand, I got rid of the fan. I have 6 inches of clearance on top and one on either side and have not had any problems since. I used to have the dvd player almost right on top of the denon.

If a new unit isn't an option, how about putting the receiver on top? If you're anything like me.... turning it DOWN is NOT an option!

good luck

Don,

You could also try one of those small computer fans that are available at Radio Shack.

The small cooling fans from radio shack are what I bought, and for me they/it was WAY too loud.
I would try something like thishttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3280&item=5763756228&rd=1
or maybe thishttp://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14981&item=5764433751&rd=1

Just use a PC cooling fan, anything from 8 Inch to 12 Inch (80 mm -standard size case fan, or the 120mm which would move a lot of air at lower speeds, quietly) Try and get a vantec However they need 12 Volts of DC power because its a PC part
