I never listened to M22s but I like my M60s a lot. Do you have a sub?
Posted By: Ajax Re: m22 or m60 - 07/11/05 03:04 AM
I moved from M22s to M60s, and though I wouldn't characterize that as a "step up," I WILL say that I found I preferred the M60s + sub, to the M22s + sub. Though It would be impossible for me to predict, you might feel the same. You have a pretty good sized room and might find the M60s do a little better job filling it. If you are not using a sub with the M22s, you WILL notice a big difference in the bass response of the M60s.

I made the upgrade from M22's to M60's due to my room size even though I was running a sufficient sub with the 22's. I was delighted when I got the 60's. It took no time for me to say, "YES! This is what I was looking for", when I plugged the 60's in for the first time.

With your size room you would stand to benefit from the increased low-end performance of tower speakers over bookshelf.

You have the gear, you have the room, get the M80s

I had a similar question, but starting with M3s.

I went up to M50s and couldn't be happier with the improvement in presence and just plain "biggerness" of sound

Yeah......it's worth the upgrade.

Amen to the 80s.

The M22s are good, and the M50s are good.. add them together and buy M80s.

As wid said, you've got a big room, and the Rotels will take the load no problem.

Hey!! right you are

Same number of the same drivers!!! I never made that connection before

WOW!!

Now if it weren't for the x-over question......

When I was considering purchasing Axioms I had the same problem. After speaking with Brent (I think) he stated that bookshelves are no comparison to floor standers....or something along those lines.

So go for the M60s!

Your just not going to get the same sound out of a smaller enclosure.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: m22 or m60 - 07/12/05 06:11 AM
True that it won't be the same, but whether it's better or not still depends on each individual's taste -- and the subwoofer, of course.

If you take into account room acoustics--it is often easier to place a monitor and sub to get a flatter response.

With floorstanders it is potentially more difficult to get room placement right. I think there are pluses and minuses to both.

Anyone hear the Totem Mani 2? Bookshelf rated down to 29Hz. Interesting push/pull design with the woofer. I haven't heard them, but based on those specs I'm really curious. Of course, there is the $4000 price tag. . .Ho hum.

Depends a bit on how loudly you like to play music. I don't know exactly why the floorstanders sound more "open" and "large" but there does seem to be a difference. In a 13x23 room I was surprised by how much of a difference I heard between M2 and M60... and how hard it was to explain what the difference sounded like

Having said that, at "reasonable" volumes with a good sub I would not expect a big difference between M22s and M60s.

My opinion is too many people overdo it and buy floorstanders to put in a smallish room where they will never be able to get placement right (this is primarily from a music listening point of view, perhaps it's different with home theater and bigger is better).

I find the M22s (or other monitors) with a sub to be the best combination in rooms of normal size. I'm also finding that using speaker inputs on Axiom's sub works much better than the RCA input. Monitors and a sub give the best combination of soundstage/depth and allow for the speakers to disappear in my opinion. I like to turn it up as much as the next guy and when I do, it's enough loudness and presence for me. To wit, I don't believe I've ever listened to VH's Eruption with the volume lower than 11.

I believe could never get my M60s placed correctly in my room and hence the reason I am trying to get rid of them. You live, you learn.

ABBA was sounding darn good with my m22s last night.

All I know is, in the downstairs "main room theater", the M60's do a killer job...20 X 30 two story room.

Upstairs in the "game room theater" for my son, the M22's with a sub-par sub sound killer as well...10 X 19 room single story room. The M22's may have a little trouble filling the downstairs room...even with the SVS PB12-Plus/2 acting as the sub...

We all have limits to "where" we can place speakers given room restraints (and WAF concerns).

Both sound excellent (in my current setups)...

Basically breaks out to personal preference...

My 2 cents....

I first purchased the M22s. The sound was wonderful, but there was something missing for me, even w/ a sub. I then picked up a pair of M60s and confirmed what I had been feeling. Even w/ the sub, the M22s could not compare to the M60s. The M60s just cover the range and fill the room much better than the 22/sub combo.

I'm not trying to stir this up, but I wanted the original poster to get an unbiased opinion. Sometimes people post here stating that there isn't much of a difference between the two and I get a little frustrated. The M22s are a great set of speakers with a wonderful sound, but they are still bookshelves. They just can't produce the same robust and satisfying sound as the 60s...nor should they.

Again, just my own two cents from someone that's done the side-by-side on this one.

I am also firmly in the "floorstanders can be better than bookshelves plus sub for music" camp. For HT it's a different story IMO.

Having said that, M2s plus a 20-39PC+ do play music pretty darned well.

For music? Let's see.....

For "Big" music I prefer my floorstanders without a sub.

For "Small" music I am very much looking foreward to having my M3s mated with tubes in a smaller listening room-also without a sub.

For HT.....gimmee da sub!!!

When mating your M3s with tubes, are the ports involved?
Posted By: bridgman Re: m22 or m60 - 07/21/05 12:45 AM
Words fail me...
Posted By: F107plus5 Re: m22 or m60 - 07/21/05 03:12 AM
I'll be running tuned circuits at lower freq than what you would get with coax or cavity resonating tubes. So the ports are effectively left out.(darn)

Could go with a direct coupled Loftin-White amp though, the M3s may like that
