I’m looking into getting a new computer speaker setup and have heard axiom has some impressive and affordable offerings. I’m currently using a Logitech 5.1 setup and have grown accustomed to that quality of sound. Anything that will sound better than my current computer speakers will likely be good enough for me. The setup will exist in a small room, my office, so I’m interested in bookshelf speakers.

The m3ti seems like a viable option as the verbiage on the site suggests they’ll be alright without a sub, and my preference is to spend as little as possible. I’ll need a receiver as well and I am a complete neophyte in terms of relevant knowledge here. Receiver recommendations are wanted but keep in mind that I prefer to go the frugal route.

If you need more information to be able to help me out here, ask away.

My first thought would be M3s plus look around for a used receiver/amp. Even simple, basic electronics plus good speakers will make a heck of a difference.

Do you need 5.1 or is stereo enough ?

Stereo is fine.

I was at an audiophile store earlier and their cheapest amp/receiver was a 500$ NAD receiver rated at 60watts a channel. That seemed low to me as I have a 300$ sony receiver that is 100watts a channel. I'm going to keep my eyes open for a name brand amp/receiver (hk, nad, marantz) on ebay and maybe a pawn shop. Are there other brands to consider and what should the minimum watt/channel I consider be?

The M3s don't require a ton of power. Unless you turn the volume up to ear-splitting levels just about any receiver will do.

Sony has been riding on their good name for a long time. Personally, I'd stay away from their stuff (well...except their tv's, they still seem to do that well).

What's your total budget for a pair of speakers and amp/receiver?

They still make some pretty good cd players in the ES line.I wouldn't ever buy one of their receivers though.

that Nad will EAT that sony for breakfast and still have room left over.
