I just finished my basement and I'm in the process of setting up my first HT from the ground up. The following is the equipment I am planning to buy.

Samsung 5677 DLP
Denon 2805
Denon 1920 DVD

Need help with speakers. Which would be better the Epic 50 with 350 sub or the Epic grand master with 350 sub. By the time you get the Epic Grand Master and purchase the stands it is more expensive than the Epic 50. Not sure how much difference the QS8 vs the QS4 and the VP150 vs the VP100 will make. 90% of the time the system will be used for HT. Leaning towards the Epic grand Master.

Room specs:
HT area is 20'-30' but one side of the room is open to a bar area and the back side of the area is open to the pool table area. Ceiling height is 8.5 ft.

Comments on the other equipment are also welcome.

How big is the actual HT area itself ? Sounds like you are using one part of a larger room for the HT ?

Very roughly, what distance do you see from mains/center speakers to listening position, and what distance from the side walls (or wherever you will mount the surrounds) and the listener ?

HT area is aprox 15'wide by 20'deep.

Listner will be aprox. 15' from mains.

Surrounds will be aprox. 7' from the listner and about 3' behind the listner mounted on the walls.

The overall room is quite large....

I went from a smaller room with M3s,(which sounded great) into a larger room with the same M3s(which then sounded somewhat strained)

I then went with M50s(cause they sound like big M3s)in the larger room and they sound great

The larger room needs a larger speaker to really sound satisfying, IMHO.

Where the problem come in, is that the M50s don't sound quite like M22s!

What you have to do is understand which speaker "Sound" you're after.

My suggestion would be to determine if you prefer the M22 "sound" or the M3 "sound" and then go with the bigger brother of that version-cause that's a pretty big room for the little guys!

Well, look who the cat slipped in through the back door.

Between QS4/QS8 and VP100/VP150 the main differences seem to be power handling and the ability to go very slightly lower in frequency which might allow a lower crossover frequency.

That is a big HT area, particularly front to back. Not a problem (I think it's going to be GREAT) but you are definitely going to need reasonably large mains and center to handle the distance and keep a decent SPL.

My first thought would be definitely Epic 50 but you might want to upgrade the center to VP150. I think the QS4s would be OK at 7 feet from the listener but not sure, might be worth checking with Axiom there.

bridgman: I don't know why but I never really looked at your sig. But now that I look at your sig it reminds me of what my dad says. Whenever someone says "Trust me." my dad will respond with "The last time I heard that I ended up in the military."

But back to the subject:
In general I like the idea of floor standing speakers better than bookshelves... but that’s just my personal opinion. I have not heard either of the two systems, so I can't really help out too much.

The sig is new, although I've had the guns for a while. I just picked up the Sledge Hammer DVD sets and they made quite an impression on me
