help! i plugged in my ep500 ... the LED lit up a second and then disappeared, and I cant get it to power up. what could I be missing?
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 02:36 AM
I use 220v. does anyone have pictures on what this popout should look like?
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 02:38 AM
oh crap. i think i was supposed to flip this plastic thing upside down. what do i do now
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 02:40 AM
i dont even know how to remove this plastic thingy
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 02:43 AM
Are you saying you had the sub set at the wrong voltage?
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 02:45 AM
yes, but i didnt see this reversible plastic thing. i cant even remove it right now.

I wonder if brent tombari visits this board.
Posted By: Wid Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 02:46 AM
On the back of the amp it says to pull out and flip over for 220. If the vottage wasn't changed you should check to see if you blew the fuse.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 02:48 AM
do i use a screwdriver? it looks like its gonna break if i try to flip it.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:01 AM
i was able to remove the thingy ... one of the fuses look fried. what kind of fuse do I replace it with?
Posted By: Wid Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:03 AM

I don't own an Axiom sub and the pics of the amp really doesn't show the part to change the voltage. I wouldn't want to tell you the wrong thing to do as far as pulling the part out, sorry.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:07 AM
Best bet is to e-mail or call Axiom, the fuse should not be hard to replace, just remember to switch voltage to 220.
Posted By: Wid Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:08 AM

It should tell you on the back of the amp as to what type of fuse it will take.
Posted By: Tharkun Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:09 AM
Right above the fuse block you removed, you should see it states to use a 3.15A 250V Slow-Blow Fuse.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:10 AM
i sure hope this type of fuse is available everywhere (meaning: Philippines)

it says T3.15AH 250V

this sucks. i waited 2 months for this.
Posted By: Wid Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:12 AM

I doubt it should be hard to find.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:44 AM
If you can't find the fuse I bet Axiom can get you one quick.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 05:08 AM
thanks guys. i've sent someone to buy one for me ... will keep you guys updated. (actually, Ill be back if it doesnt work ... i wont be if it works, because id be busy listening)
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 05:19 AM
Once you get it working, let us know what you think. Happy listening.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 05:39 AM
i put in the fuse. it popped too. it doesnt have the same FAT string in the middle of the fuse
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 06:05 AM
i replaced both fuses ... and they both popped.
I returned one of the original unpopped fuse ... and put in a new one (switched it back to 110v) then plugged it in using 110v transformer. i got the amber light which changed to a yellow light. i dont know what a yellow or green light is on this unit because i've never seen both)
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 06:17 AM
ok ... assuming these substitute fuses dont work (i will order some fuses from axiom) ... what else could be wrong? i wouldnt want to have some fuses fedexed and find out something else is wrong.

Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 06:26 AM
The yellow light indicates a fault. I think your best bet is to contact Axiom by phone and give them all the facts, they will make it right.
Posted By: Billy_hk Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 08:57 AM
Mike:
I'm afraid sth burnt out inside the amplifier.
I need to flip the plastic to 220V before I gave power to sub for my area. The manual did mention how to change input voltage to 220V if needed.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 11:26 AM
what's an sth? (or is that shortcut for "something")

that would really suck for me.
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep500 no power - 03/13/06 03:46 PM
Just email Axiom
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/14/06 12:22 AM
I already did, but I can only fire off one email per day ... (because of time differences)
during my daytime, its nighttime in Canada
and during Canadian daytime its nighttime here.

Problem is, they might be pretty busy, so were not able to answer all my questions ... for example they thought I had the amber light instead of the yellow light.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/14/06 12:25 AM
can somebody ask axiom IF i plugged the unit while the fusebox was set at 110v, would there be other damages to the unit aside from the fuses?
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/14/06 12:33 AM
I tried to call right now, but there was nobody answering over there. must be 7:30pm over there right now
Posted By: Ken.C Re: ep500 no power - 03/14/06 02:15 AM
Um, isn't amber yellow?
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/14/06 02:19 AM
i think amber is sort of orangey. besides, the LED turns ON to amber before changing to yellow
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep500 no power - 03/14/06 02:58 AM
It appears to be obvious that you did not have the proper voltage set on the sub for your area. I would just see if they can send you a new fuse.
Posted By: Tharkun Re: ep500 no power - 03/14/06 03:20 AM
You can call Axiom (1-866-244-8796) beteen 10pm your time till noon the next day your time. I would suggest calling them and explaining the issues. If you have replaced the blown fuse with the same exact type and are blowing more fuses, good idea to call before going any further on your own.

If you get the answering system just leave your name and number and I know someone will contact you during business hours.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/15/06 11:49 PM
Brent is sending me some fuses ...

what do you guys think? I swap with the right fuses, everything gonna be ok? or you think something else is wrong?
Posted By: dllewel Re: ep500 no power - 03/15/06 11:51 PM
Just make sure you have the sub set for the correct voltage (220) before you try again. Hopefully nothing else is wrong, but don't know.
Posted By: Wid Re: ep500 no power - 03/15/06 11:57 PM

What did Brent say, did you ask what the results would be not switching over to 220.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/16/06 12:04 PM
he said one guy in australia did the same thing, and it was only the fuse.

apparently, that guy in australia and me are the only 2 stupid people in the world : ) (just kidding to the australian guy)

with my luck ... I'd be ecstatic if it were only the fuse.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/16/06 03:56 PM
We hope it's only the fuse also, so you can be up and running.
Posted By: jimmienorton Re: ep500 no power - 03/16/06 04:56 PM
I have been watching this thread for awhile, all I cant say is that must have been one of those smack yourself in the head feelings. Good Luck Bro! I feel for you, just looking at a box like that with nothing coming out of it. I was in the same boat for a couple of days but Axiom took real good care of me. I didnt hook mine up wrong but the amp was DOA.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/21/06 12:00 PM
still no fuse. when you guys in canada say "i sent them via airmail"

what does airmail mean? postal service? or courier?
(I asked this question to brent but he answered, "it should arrive in 5 days" - which doesn't really answer my question)

Im guessing axiom is smothered with too many emails/questions that they barely have time to really understand the questions.

so define 5 days ... does that include saturday and sunday? or workdays only?

Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep500 no power - 03/21/06 02:47 PM
I don't think they are smothered or barely have time for customer support. They do understand questions also. Anyway, I think 5 days is pretty self explanitory.
Posted By: Amie Re: ep500 no power - 03/21/06 02:55 PM
Hi Mike;

They went out via airmail, which is 5-12 business days to your country. (that's Monday to Friday here for each day and the mail won't move on Saturday or Sundays, at least not in Canada).
Posted By: SirQuack Re: ep500 no power - 03/21/06 03:03 PM
Sounds like great service to me, many thanks Amie. Keep up the good work...

Randy

Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/22/06 12:01 AM
thanks amie. that explains a lot. am not really complaining though, just very anxious.

I have to note though that by phone Brent is a great help. (we cover a lot of ground by phone) but I also burn a lot of money for the long distance calls.

its just that by email and the 13 hour time difference, I get to fire one email per day (wait for 12-24 hours for a reply) and then see that the answer doesnt really hit the mark. (which adds another 24 hours to get a better reply) gets really frustrating real fast.
Posted By: Spoiler Re: ep500 no power - 03/23/06 11:59 AM
I can see how it would be frustrating... let us know what happens!

Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/26/06 12:07 AM
i wont be bothering anyone til the 12 business days is up (maybe ill wait 3 weeks to be sure - heard from my cousin in Canada that the air mail will take eons to arrive)

although the fedex rates to courier documents (smallest measure of weight) costs 75CAD -> im good with air mail

to keep me busy while waiting, Im actually considering buying a Velodyne CHT15-R - or im gonna go crazy waiting ... but this will set back my goals of buying a DD-15 in the future (my fiancee will kill me if I buy this and say I still want a DD in the future)
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/26/06 01:05 AM
We are all crossing our fingers, that when you change the fuses everything is ok.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/27/06 11:39 AM
Velodyne CHT15-R

I will post shootout results IF I get my EP500 working.
I would like to see a 12"er beat a 15"er
-they're both slot ported
-they're both good brands
-they're similar in power (600 for velo 500 for axiom)

the thousand dollar challenge: will the bigger woofer beat the higher end 12"er

Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 04:51 AM
I have gotten the fuses, 10 working days or 14 days total.

the unit has turned on, amber color led turns into another color which i cant distinguish if green or yellow. (no sound coming from the unit)

I attached pictures of the led for you guys to see if the light is indeed green or yellow

edit: attached all 5 pics
with flash
without flash
with flash covered
different angle
etc.

Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 05:11 AM

It looks yellow to me, should be green.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 05:34 AM
i edited my post to show the pics without clicking links anymore.

anybody here willing to post pics of their "green" lighted back side of their sub?
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 05:47 AM
Where is the trim switch set can't see from pictures.
Amber Light / No Audio Turn trim switch out of "Load" position.

Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 07:15 AM
I've tested the trim at all the settings: flat, half, full ... even at load (but the light did not turn amber)

I also tried all the crossover settings.

the only time I see amber is upon power up, it lights up 1-2 seconds then turns into this color. is it the same with yours?
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 07:26 AM
When powering up mine goes from amber to green within 1 second.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 09:27 AM
thanks Homedad, at least now I'm sure that's the order of things ... and that amber is NOT yellow - I have trouble distinguishing color
Posted By: Billy_hk Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 03:10 PM
Mike:
your pics showed green color.
My EP-500 when power-up the led turn amber->green in 1 second.
In trim settings, no color changes in whatever postion.
I also can't feel the difference when I changed the trim settings.
I don't know if mine one is working normally but mine has sound. Hope this can help you.
Posted By: dllewel Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 04:13 PM
My vote on your LED color is green in just about every pic, especially the one in the dark. Definitely looks green to me. You should be getting sound however if it is green. Are you using the same input cable from your Velo sub that works? That would eliminate the source as a problem.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/29/06 10:41 PM
yes I am,

well I emailed brent right when I posted those pics, that was 18 hours ago. the office hours in Canada has winded down (by my calculations). in short, its either my email was missed or he's asking the technical guys, I just wish I was sent an email confirming receipt.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/30/06 04:48 AM
somebody suggested I use NO flash and sunlight white balance to show the led's true color ...

Posted By: Ajax Re: ep500 no power - 03/30/06 07:08 AM
In my opinion,

green
green
green, and
green

Posted By: Tharkun Re: ep500 no power - 03/30/06 10:58 AM
Yes you do have a green LED and just courious as to your purchase of the 500, did you order it from Axiom, as in this was a new sub and not used ?
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 03/30/06 11:25 AM
yes, brand new from axiom (specifically, brent)

here's the detailed story:
I had my Aunt in Canada order the unit for me, so SHE can facilitate shipping to me (but this is wholly my money, this is NOT a gift, nor am I the 2nd owner)

I ordered the unit mid january, 2006 and arrived in its destination in canada within 1-2 days.. it was delivered to its philippine destination march 6, 2006 (one day after I was confined in the hospital - but that is another story) ... after 6 days in the hospital and 2 more days waiting for the tools required to cut the metal belts used to support the box (btw, box was in perfect condition) I looked over the back of the unit ... saw the label 120v / 230v, plugged it in, saw the led light up then off. I figured, oh crap, took a flashlight and just then saw the fusebox with the teeny tiny instructions on it. (granted it was stupid of me to have missed that in the manual) but c'mon, I was excited to listen to it (also the reason I was only in the hospital for 6 days, I forced the doctors to clear me for discharge).

Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 04/14/06 12:54 AM
forgot to update you guys ... I THINK the unit is fine now, had my engineer friend fix it the other day. I had just about given up on the unit (dilly dallying sending it to my engineer friend - because I thought, if we didn't have slow-blow fuses, what are the chances we'd have the other parts inside the amp) but amie gave me the encouragement to have it fixed.

thanks amie.
Posted By: HomeDad Re: ep500 no power - 04/14/06 01:37 AM
Great news, looking forward to your thoughts of the 500.
Posted By: Spoiler Re: ep500 no power - 04/14/06 01:40 AM
So what exactly was the problem with the sub? Also, do you still have the Velodyne to compare it to??

Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 04/14/06 02:35 AM
my engineer friend mentioned two things he fixed/replaced ...
a resistor and some technical term I didn't remember.

yes, I have compared the 500 to the DLS-5000R but just for the DTS demo U-571. the 500 is less boomy but also has less kick in the chest. the 500 has more pant flapping powers though. also, my ceiling joists now rattle when the ep500 is at the 8 oclock setting.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 07/05/06 05:30 AM
here's how I have my HT setup right now ... it is about to change, I ordered a new sub and one of these is getting moved to a 2 channel setup.

aside from speaker wires to the high level connectors, is there some other way of connecting the ep500 to a pre-amp without an LFE out? i wish the ep500 had left and right rca ins.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: ep500 no power - 07/05/06 05:35 AM
A y-connector ought to work just fine.
Posted By: mikec Re: ep500 no power - 07/05/06 05:42 AM
you mean the left and right rca outs of the pre-amp Y-connects into a single rca (to be input into the LFE in)?
Posted By: Ken.C Re: ep500 no power - 07/05/06 05:48 AM
As far as I know, that should be fine.

You should probably wait for a second opinion, though.
Posted By: JohnK Re: ep500 no power - 07/05/06 09:22 AM
Mike, a somewhat similar question was discussed about a year ago and Rick Widner(wid)brought to my attention this Rane note pointing out a possible problem with the Y. Since the two pre-amp outputs could drive each other because they're connected by the Y, distortion, loss of signal and possible damage could result.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: ep500 no power - 07/05/06 09:30 PM
Wouldn't directional cables be a possible solution for this?
Posted By: JohnK Re: ep500 no power - 07/06/06 01:58 AM
Absolutely, Peter, but you have to pay at least ten times as much for the ones with arrows.
Posted By: Spoiler Re: ep500 no power - 07/06/06 08:35 PM
Hmmm...arrows. Beautiful, beautiful arrows. I'm gettin my credit card...
