I couldn't resist.
This thread is dedicated to Ken and his late night browsing, and early morning, and mid afternoon right after the nap.

You beat me to it. Well, I guess I could start threads on:

biamping vs. biwiring
measuring all channels driven or not
how "bright" are Axioms?
HTIB's vs separates
center channel: same brand as the front? horizontal or vertical?
2 EP-350's vs 1 EP-500 (wait, I did ask that question ...)

Don't want to hijack the thread Chess, but my favorite question that comes up all the time is:

"Why newbies can't figure out how to use the Search option?"

Do speaker wires really make a difference?

Are Axioms bright?

I hear that they make the subwoofer more "laid back"

Yeah, but the problem is that the revealing nature (some call bright) of the Axioms suddenly transforms into a more "blustery" image.

Initially the presence seemed quite ripe - lots of primary mids, with harsh highs leading the parade, and strangely a bass that was a bit thin and dry. With time, it opened up and turned savoury: red fruits with new leather, lovely ripe tannins, medium bodied, earth and spice and a bit of stalk too. Very good length and a drying finish complete the package – a good speaker, and I like the cut of its jib.

Shawn:
That's a riot!

Now THAT was a good speaker review. I don't know why we don't see more like that.

Now that's better than any review i've ever seen coming out of S&V. (I mean the "new" S&V of course, not that swanky "original" S&V that Alan used to edit).

If y'all want to have some real fun; just bop on over to some of the headphone forums. In that arena the ultimate is to have a different set of phones and source and amplification and interconnects to cover all the bases....individually!!

Like: these phones, and this amp, and this source, with these interconnects for "this" kind of music.

For "that" type of music, use these phones and this other amp.

And the amps, with miliwatt outputs, cost as much as amps with megawatts! It's nearly nuttso!!

The key words are "complementary" cans. Such as "Grados" for rock and "Senns" for classical and "AKG" for most everything in-between!! They all sound different but supposedly complement each other with the type of music being listened to!

The other word is "Synergy"! This amp works with these cans but not with those. And those cans work with this amp but not with that.

They even have "for sale or trade" parts of the forums where folks can swap around electronics and cans at minimum cost until they find what works best for them! It's pretty cool really.

And break-in with this other type of transducer is the generally accepted way of life.

I tried to get phones to match my Axioms; but many of them try to get phones, and amps, and source devices, and cables, to match each music gender!!

....but, ya know, they're havin' fun too!
Rich.

I nominate Shawn for Post of the Year!

Who's on that committee again?
Posted By: JohnK Re: Do Speakers Break In? - 08/10/06 03:27 AM
Tom, the identity of the committee members is highly confidential, of course, but they've consulted by way of PMs and have determined that Shawn's "review" is so outstanding that there's no good reason to delay in declaring him the winner. The prize is this "high end" amplifier which will surely make his speakers sound still better(after a few month's of "burn-in", of course).

You have to just love the 25 year, no problem mandatory extended warranty on those things.
There's nothing like a Belchfire.

WHERE do you find this stuff?

Anyone read the fine print? Hysterical!

Yes. Speakers break in falls, typically, of two feet or greater distance.

I think someone was a little bitter about Crown...
Posted By: dllewel Re: Do Speakers Break In? - 08/10/06 10:48 PM
Yeah, but what's funny is it is under their actual website.
Posted By: DrunkenWolf Re: Do Speakers Break In? - 08/10/06 11:51 PM
At least they have a sense of humor.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Do Speakers Break In? - 08/11/06 12:51 AM
I get the feeling that's kind of an internal only thing...
Posted By: JohnK Re: Do Speakers Break In? - 08/11/06 03:16 AM
Nope; pretty much just what it seems to be. Crown(full disclosure: another of the Harman International group of which I'm part-owner)is a common-sense operation pretty rare in the audio amplifier world. They're taking their little shot at the high-end/high-watt/high-buck amplifier silliness.

For another of their "products" note the "digital microphone" which because of its permanently shorted output offers perfectly omnidirectional response.
Posted By: dllewel Re: Do Speakers Break In? - 08/11/06 03:14 PM
That's great John!

I like these under the specs:

"Sensitivity: Yes, but manliness too.
Frangrance: The microphone smells like a bear.
Dimensions: All three included."

Good stuff.
