The Axiom speakers have gone through lots of research and development since their introduction years ago. I'm not sure why you would want to alter the design. The cabinets are designed to do exactly what you are stating, reduce resonants. If your having issues your question something your hearing, it is more likely to be your positioning of the speakers, your room acoustics, etc.

I have been tinkering with some DIY speakers over the last 6 months. What you are describing are some very good suggestion for building your own speakers, but I would refrain from modding something from Axiom. As SirQ mentioned, Axiom has spent many hours perfecting their designs so these small mods will not necessarily improve performance.

MDF is already a low-resonance material and the Axiom cabinets are designed to minimize resonance as it is. Adding a thin ring of rubber between the driver and cabinet won't likely improve anything. May I ask where you received this suspect advice?

The store I bought them from the sales man sugested adding extra insulation as a customer of his did this and he said it improved the sound a bit, how he knows I don't know, just seems that insulation is in the cabinet to reduce the acoustics within that more be better. I checked and there really isn't a whole lot as it is. But, maybe there is a reason there is only so much in there.

Also the idea of the rubber gasket came from , Paradigm's new Reference line they use a gasket and also the screws that hold the speaker housing to the cabinet is in a rubber type device that eliminates metal to metal contact. Also insulates between the metal speaker housing and the cabinet. Not that you will notice anything, but resently my one midrange speaker started to vibrate loudly when I play Tragically Hips Blow at High Dough, just during the bass intro it must be in that frequency level , but this came to mind. It only happens in the one speaker cabinet.

You purchased these in a store? Axiom only sells direct? They used to sell a Merak line in Canada, but I'm not familiar with this being the practice with their current business. Also, these are not Paradigms, so not sure I would alter the design, unless you would want to void warranty, which you may not have anyway since you didn't buy from the manufacturer.

Axiom used to sell in stores a couple years ago they weren't always direct. They are warrantied and no I haven't modded them.

Hey, if they're under warranty, I'd give Axiom a call to get that mid taken care of.

Yes, actually I did email Amie and she forward the email to Debbie ... who in turn actually called me personally ( don't get that from companies anymore ) and spoke to me about it all this with in 2 -3 hours. That is customer service AAA+++++++ to Axiom .
