Proper wiring for AV Receiver / Amp

I think that the way I have my amp/receiver configured is incorrect. However, it sounds fine.
I have a Yamaha Rx-v995 with the line-outs (rca jacks) going into an HK 5 channel amp. I run my speakers from the amp essentually making my receiver a pre-amp?

If you followed that, here's the second part. Couldn't I leave the receiver hooked up to the amp as is and run speaker wire from the Yamaha and the HK amp to a bi-wired speaker and get the same effect? Or does it matter.

No it is not possible when using the preouts of the receiver. It bypasses the amp section of the Yamaha when using it as a pre/pro.

Now I am confused. If I do not connect the receiver to the (stand alone amp) using the preouts, how does the other amp send a signal to the speaker? Or is the other amp simply an amp and the signal would come from the receiver in a bi-amp set up as it shows here at the bottom of the page.

When using the pre-outs on the receiver, you do not use the receivers speaker terminals. The pre-outs bypass the receivers amp section, because your using your seperate amps for the power now.

In my setup, I have my Denon 2805 driving my center channel and surrounds. However, I have decided to use a seperate amp to drive my m80's. So, I have coax pre-outs from my receivers L/R OUT jacks going to my amp coax IN jacks. Then I use regular 12 gauge speaker wire from my amp to my m80's. You would never use the receivers speaker terminals at the same time if your using a seperate amp.

Bi-amping means you have two amps. One, driving the woofers, and the other one driving the mids/highs. So you run seperate speaker wires from the amps to your speakers. You also have to remove the gold bar on the back of the speaker terminals to seperate the woofers from the mid/high drivers.

I think you should forget about all this bi-amping talk and just enjoy your speakers. If you have a decent AVR or seperate amp, you will be fine.

When you use the receiver as a pre/pro there is no singnal being sent to the amp section of the receiver. So wiring up speakers to an amp (in the receiver) that is not receiving a signal would do no good.
