You want a separate cd player? Why not just use your current dvd player.

Pat, are you looking for anything specific, like SACD capability?

Pat, as the other replies indicated, it isn't entirely clear what your specific need is. If you already have a DVD player for your setup, and if it's been made in the last few years, then it almost certainly also plays CDs as well. These players have dual frequency lasers, operating at the 780nm wavelength that's optimal for the reading of CDs and 650nm, which is optimal for regular DVDs. There's no inherent benefit in a separate CD player.

If you are looking for SACD/DVD-Audio/DVD-Video take a look at the Oppo 980 ($169).

I've also been thinking of picking up either a 980 or 983. They have been rated as Class B sources by Stereophile, and that is a HIGH rating.

Funny, I have been thinking about one of these as well as an upgrade to my current system. The price is definitely attractive.

If its just for using as a music transport, I would stick to 980 (thats what I did). Even if Video upconversion was a big deal to me, I'd look at PS3 since it does it along with Blu-Ray support. While I own and love other Oppo players, I think 983 is too overpriced for its capabilities in addition to not being future proof.

I head Oppo recently let out news on an Blu Ray Player. Wonder what its price is going to be...

I'll chime in with a quick thought: Sometimes DVD players aren't the best at playing CDs. Not in sound quality, but in transport/handling/buffering or whatever.

I moved a Pioneer 578 (once a well-regarded upsampling player) into my office after it was replaced with an Oppo, and the transport (for lack of a better description) drives me up the wall unless I play disc all the way through. If you have to pause the disc (as I do frequently for phone calls), it goes very quickly into a "sleep" mode where the remote isn't recognized. If I want to go back to the beginning of a track of forward a track, it spits out a buffered 1/2 second of something first, etc, etc, etc...

It's going to go down into my workshop, and in the meantime, I miss having a straight CD player with crisp pauses and track starts!

I was responding to 2x6spds quote on the pricing (and potential value he might be seeing). I do agree that a dedicated player is - in most cases - better than a composite player. However for those who are not very discerning (a huge majority of us), a DVD/CD player is a decent option.

I use a harmony and have not encountered the issue of oppo not recognizing it. Also I will play some CDs tonite to see if I hear anything other than music upon pause and play.

Here's the sneak peek from Audioholics

I have an Oppo 980. I works great. The only thing I dont like is that the main left and right audio out is part of the 7 channel out setup. So you cant run Analog to your TV and reciever without using splitters or a switch box.

The picture quality is fantastic and the audio sounds great. A quality piece of hardware.

I really like our Oppo, I'll most certainly get one of their BR players whenever it gets on the market.

I've just read that their Blue Ray player won't be released with the new HD audio formats, but will be added to a firmware update at a later date.

Cam, any idea when they are supposed to be out?

Anticipated release is this winter (November-February) with a projected price tag of $500-$700.

$500-$700 and you will have to wait for the HD audio, what are they doing?
