I live about 400 feet from a local news radio tower. when i have my tv on, there is a loud background noise of what the tower is broadcasting, as well as the sound of the show i'm watching. If i hit mute, they both go away, but even if the tv volume is all the way down, the radio is still going. I do have cable service going to the tv, as well as a dvd player hooked up. Radio shack sold me a couple of rf chokes to wrap the cords around, but that did no good. Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. It's horribly annoying and i don't really have the extra money to buy a new tv that supposedly won't do it. Thanks for the help!
Ham, welcome. The fact that the radio interference remained when you turned down the TV volume would indicate that the interference wasn't just riding in on a cable or power cord and being amplified along with the TV sound. That's why the RadioShack RF filters had no effect. Presumably, if you disconnect the cable TV or other input to the TV, the radio interference can still be heard? The interference would appear to be directly affecting the audio section of the TV internally at a point downstream from the volume control.

TV sets are supposed to be adequately shielded against most RF interference. Whether 400 feet is just too tough a problem, or the station is violating FCC interference regulations(have you talked to them?)is unclear. If the TV set is just inadequately protected(have you attempted to talk to the manufacturer about the problem?)there's not much that can be done as a practical matter. Aluminum foil can serve as a shield against RF interference, and you might experiment with covering various spots on the set, but this doesn't have a very high probability of success.
Just in case we're talking about a CRT and you're considering adding the foil to the INSIDE of the TV chassis... be very careful. Causing any parts of your body to short circuit between the anode and aquadag can (would probably) result in death or serious injury.

Yes, good point; I did mean just taping sheets of foil at various points on the outside of the set.

Oh, I know what you meant, JohnK... just wanted to be sure that he didn't try poking around inside the set and turned himself into a crispy critter.

I think you just wanted to use "aquadag" in a sentence. If that word was in my vocabulary, I know I'd want to! ;\)

For those curious... aquadag (and no, it doesn't mean a wet dog)
I'll just also add that the mortal danger is still there, even if you have the set turned off and unplugged.
