Thats a weird review. The guy says its a great book and then spends 80% of the review talking about whats missing.

Hi Fred,

Yes, it is indeed peculiar. It's most unfortunate that the Boston Audio Society got Howard Ferstler to review Floyd's book. Howard gets all bent out of shape if an authoritative voice ignores his (Ferstler's) beloved Allison speakers.

In fact, contrary to Ferstler's criticisms, we did measure Allison speakers and do listening tests at the NRC. And they just didn't do very well in the double-blind listening tests. At the time, I was editor of Sound&Vision (Canada). I still have the data and listening panel results on the Allisons. We also did the dbx SoundField speakers. At the time, I praised the big soundstage and spatial qualities, but the tonal character was very colored, and several woofers failed when we played Mark Knopfler's "Ride Across the River" from Dire Strait's Brothers in Arms.

Cheers,
Alan
