Hi all,

I just bought a new ONKYO TX-NR 1007 receiver and I have Axiom speakers.

These are my speakers:

front and left (M3 v2 Bookshelf Speakers)
centre (VP150 v2 Center Channel Speaker)
Surround left and right (QS8 v2 Surround Speakers)

After running audyssey, audyssey set my speakers to 40Hz. Since I want LFE to go to my subwoofer, what would be the right Hz that I should set my front and surround speakers? I have these choices: 40Hz, 50Hz, 60Hz, 70Hz, 80Hz, 90Hz, 100Hz, 120Hz, 150Hz, or 200Hz.

What would be the best selection for the speakers that I have?

Thanks in advance.

I'd probably go with 70 or 80Hz with that lineup.

Got to agree.

80hz all the way around is the way to go.

I would cross over at 100-120Hz.

Here is the frequency response plot from SoundStage for the M3Ti:

BTW mata7, nice pick with that big Onk. I think the combination of the NR1007 and M3s will be wonderful. The M3s are my favorite Axiom speakers.

In all seriousness, I see your point, but I would point out 2 things: Those measurements are 10 years old, and it's barely rolled off at 80Hz. In fact, from ~90-105, it appears to be a higher hump than the rest of the frequencies, at least until you get up to the very, very highest treble. Further, since the crossovers are not a hard and fast cut off, but a roll off, 80 Hz would probably be a reasonable place to do it.

OTOH, to the original poster, play around with it; use what sounds best to you. 2x6 is right in at least 2/3 of his signature.

To your point, since the cutoff's aren't hard and fast, would you not want to have it set at 100Hz like 2x6 suggested to avoid that roll and keep things level?

Mata, first of all it is not Audyssey that is setting your speakers to small/large and to a 40hz crossover, this comes from the receiver mfg. Anyway, I would go with 80hz for the fronts and center, and 90hz for the Q's.

I have my M80's set to small 60hz, vp150 small 80hz, and Qs8's to small 90hz...

A lot has to do if you ran the setup correctly and followed the Audyssey setup guide on AVSforum.

Yeah, I suppose you could do it that way (and it's worth a shot!), but I think that hump is one of the characteristics (assuming it actually still exists) that people like about the M3s.

I'm often confused in regards to Audyssey, but I believe Audyssey takes the measurement of frequency roll off, then communicates that to the reciever (by PFM I asume). The reciever then picks the next available higher X-over point.

I have a set of QS8Ti's and a set of QS8v2's in my room. It set the Ti's 30 htz highter then the V2's. (90 and 120) Not that this is relivent, but I did find it interesting.

I have my 80's set to 60, the twin 22's at 80 and left the Q's where the magic box wanted them.

Hi mata, I’ve got a question. Did your receiver set all your speaekers to 40Hz or just your M3s. Reason I ask is that even when I had my QS8 corner loaded neither my Denon or current Onkyo has ever set them below 60 Hz and that was never consistent. Similarly 70 Hz is the lowest I’ve ever seen my VP150 set. Even now my Onlyo 3007 doesn’t consistently set my center M80 below 50Hz like my L/R mains which are closer to walls. So if all your speakers are being set at 40 Hz I suspect there’s either something less than ideal with your setup (corner loading, center in a cabinet) or with the measurements or the receiver.

As Randy suggested if you haven’t you may want to check out the "Official" Audyssey thread

If nothing else it will give you a better understanding of how Audyssey works and what it’s doing.

Probably the most important thing to not about changing crossover settings after running Audyssey is that you can always raise the crossover w/o effecting it’s performance however Audyssey doesn’t calculate an EQ curve for the speakers below the calculated crossover point. So if you lower a crossover below what was calculated then the EQ curve isn’t working for those lower frequencies. Also, the curve applied to the LFE channel is finer than the other speakers so Audyssey recommends setting everything to small and at least as high as 80Hz to get the best performance. However YMMV.

Hi Sloped,

The short answer is that deep bass starts becoming directional above 80 Hz, so you don't want to feed bass frequencies above 80 Hz to a subwoofer or your ears will "locate" the bass at the subwoofer. The M3's output at 80 Hz remains strong and is similar to its upper bass and midrange output.

With most compact 2-way speakers like the M3, the default crossover setting of 80 Hz is almost always the best choice.

If your subwoofer is at the front of the room near the M3s, it wouldn't matter much if you used a higher crossover frequency. And to kcarlile, yes, the hump in the M3's lower bass is still there--it was apparent in the last set of double-blind tests I did when the M3s were compared to a competitor's pair of floorstanding (!) speakers that had virtually no bass output.

Regards,

You also have remember that graph 2x6 points out is taken in an anechoic chamber and will quickly roll off under 100HZ. You can expect much lower in room response.

Thanks Alan,

I ask because I want to learn.
Posted By: 2x6spds Re: Axiom speakers & Onkyo TX- NR 1007 - 01/25/10 11:05 PM
I crossed mine at 100 Hz and I assure you that my subwoofer was not directional. The M3s driven by a 5 wpc SET tube amp and Velodyne sub created the much desired wall of sound effect.

The point that speaker performance in an anechoic environment will differ from real world performance in your room is well taken. Rather than take anyone's advice, you may want to put some time in to tweaking your system in your environment for your pleasure.

What I want to know is:

How the OP found that picture of me

Thanks for all your suggestions. I am going to spend some time on the weekend to read the audyssey thread to learn more about it.

For now, I will set it at 80Hz.

To grunt: Did your receiver set all your speaekers to 40Hz or just your M3s.

Answer: to all of them.

My set up is 2 front, centre on a stand (not a cabinet), 2 rear speakers on the back wall which our couch is flush with the wall, subwoofer is at the front next to front speakers and tv.

Once again thanks.

The only speakers either of my receivers ever set to 40Hz are my M80s.
Below are the ranges that my Denon 2807 and Onkyo 3007 have set my speaker
in and I've run Audyssey dozens of times in three different rooms:

M80s 40-50Hz
VP150 70-90Hz
QS8s 60-100Hz
M22s 70-80Hz

I'm suspicious that something is wrong with your equipment setting all your
speakers to 40Hz. You might want to post in the Audyssey thread over at AVS
and see if they have any suggestions.

Just setting everything to 40Hz is not in itself a problem because you can
always raise the crossover setting w/o negatively impacting Audysseys
performance. However, if the system is not correctly identifying the -3dB
point of your speakers then there may be other things it's not doing
correctly.
