i'm presently using a panny model dvd-rv30 player received as a gift before Axiom, etc. i've it hooked up using both rca and digital connects to yammi rvx1300, and from there to 32" sony plasma. this is a non-progressive player, but believe the sony converts the signal, correct? when playing a dvd, the speaker indicator lights for the speakers do light up, and show they are active. i noticed while re-reading the manual, there is a question asked in the setup asking if i had a sub. not knowing the answer, i left it defaulted to no. should i go back in and set to yes? last question..since the sony converts to progressive, would there be a cost effective picture quality gain going to a progressive player?

Yes, all digital display devices are inherently progressive, and your Sony plasma has an onboard deinterlacer in it. I doubt that a progressive DVD player will provide a readily noticeable improvement of picture quality in this case.

As for the subwoofer setting (you are talking about the sub setting on the Yamaha receiver, right?), you have to set it to YES. Otherwise, the sub won't receive any signals.

re-read manual last night, the dvd player has a sub output on it, which i don't use. i do let the receiver handle it all.

I had no idea an HDTV will automatically progressively scan the video.

If so, what's the purpose of putting progressive scan on a DVD player if the screen will do it itself?

The DVD player may have a better deinterlacer than the display. I get a sharper picture if I send a progressive-scan signal to my projector.

Two reasons, ravi:

(1) As Jason mentioned, the deinterlacer in the DVD player may be of higher quality than the one in the display device.

(2) Everything else being equal, the DVD player has one distinct advantage -- it can deinterlace the image BEFORE it is converted to the analog format for component connection. In contrast, the display device has to first A/D convert the interlaced signal sent via component and then de-interlace it. Some information in the original interlaced signal may have been lost through the D/A and A/D conversion.


That said, (2) is becoming rather theoretical these days. It is usually the matter of the quality of deinterlacers in the player vs. the one in the TV. At any rate, I always suggest you compare both 480i and 480p transmissions. I know my Yamaha projector (with the Faroudja/DCDi chip) does a better job than my XBox.
