Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 08/28/08 11:33 AM

Hello I am in Brentwood CA 94513. Would it be possible for me to listen to some ones speakers near by????????

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 08/28/08 11:11 PM

Rodriguez, welcome. If you look at the listings above for the LA area you'll see several possibilities. Your post may not be always noticed, so the usual procedure is to try to make direct contact by sending a PM to the person, who's indicated his willingness(unless the listing is outdated)to show off his Axioms.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 08/28/08 11:45 PM

I have M3s and I'm in Rancho Cucamonga.

I can verify his location as well as his M3 ownership, and I seriously hope the barrel is true.

Check, check, and. . uh. . check.

You can add me to the list in Thetford Mines, QC, Canada. I'll be happy to help my fellow quebecers save money on great speakers!

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 02/13/09 07:57 PM

If this is how I get on this list then here goes.
I'm in Merritt BC with Axiom M22v2s and Ep350v2 sub.
PM me!

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 02/13/09 11:35 PM

Kim, I know that on occasion Amie would check this thread to add another listing, but I think that the better bet now would be to send a message directly to Axiom.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 02/14/09 05:46 PM

Yes Kim, this should work, I can't remember the guys name, but he is monitoring this for Amie while she is away. Otherwise, you can PM them or call them.

Can someone outline the procedure to send a PM for possible audition? I see no links nor in my case a name...it just says "ask Axiom." What does this mean?...Thanks...Lee

There may be an easier way to PM someone but this will work.

Pick username of the member you wish to PM > click on the “User List” on the menu bar near the top of the page > click on the letter or number their username begins with > find and click on their username on that page > click on “Send a Private Message” > then type the and send the message the same as you would when posting in the forum.

Hope this helps,
Dean

I would think that "ask Axiom" means that the customer isn't necessarily a member of the board, but they expressed interest in holding auditions, so you would need to coordinate through Axiom. That's my guess, anyway.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 04/04/09 08:00 AM

You are right wise one. If someone, either a forum member or non-member is willing to do auditions, but they don't what to be contacted directly by someone via PM they can setup Axiom as the middle man.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 04/04/09 11:39 AM

Captain, as Dave said, just click on a user's name in the forums and then send them a PM. Or, if they are not very active recently you can go to the users list to find the name there. It would be nice if the Audition list names were clickable.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 09/12/09 10:49 AM

Am interested in hearing comments from anyone with an Axion Epic 80- 600. How do you like the units? Do you have one or two 600s? What size and configuration is your listening area? Am located in Western NC USA and would appreciate the chance of listening to the Axiom 80. Thanks. Burnmtn

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 09/12/09 11:21 AM

Hi burn, welcome. Check the "hearing things" thread to see if someone in your area might own the speakers you would like to hear. Some of the people on the list may not frequent the Axiom forums however, so you may want to give Axiom a call or perhaps start a new thread of your own, hopefully someone will respond.

ummmm Adrian, this is the audition "hearing things" thread. \:\) Kiding aside, Burn, yes as Adrian said, look at the top of this list and see if anyone is near your location and then just send them a PM.

There are tons of us that own the 80's and 600. I started with 60's and the first version of the 350. I've loved everything from Axiom and keep wanting more more more. \:\)

Hi Raju, did you check page one of the Audition thread at the top of this section? It lists people that are willing to audition in your area. You can send them a PM (personal message) using the boards, or maybe someone else will come along and offer you an audition. Good Luck

I tried that but did not get much of a response from Axiom. They basically went down the list (which is outdated) that anyone can access.

Buckeye(can't imagine the reason for your board name), welcome. If you look at the list at the beginning of this thread you'll see possibilities in the Columbus area. The usual procedure is to try to make contact by sending PMs, but when the person hasn't been active on the board recently he may not see the PM. It may be possible for Axiom to assist in making contact if direct approaches haven't worked out.

Edit: PS. I also sent you a PM. Check your messages.

Hi,
I am in Stamford, CT and would like to audition the following:
M80s
VP150
QS8
Posted by: terzaghi

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 03/11/10 09:42 PM

Hi Vikas,

If you check the first page of this thread you will see 3 people in CT:
East Granby : M80, VP150, QS8, FMS-QS (ask Axiom)
East Haven : M80, VP150 (RCVECC)
Sandy Hook : M60, M22, VP100, QS8, EP350 (Joe_in_Ct )

Usually the procedure is to send a pm (private message) to the people listed under the first page of this thread.
However, I am not familiar with the two people listed so chances are they may not receive your private message if you send them one but it is still worth a shot.

It does look like there is an individual that can be contact through Axiom so I would call axiom and inquire about how to get in touch with the first owner listed. Axiom may have other ways of contacting the other two people as well.

if you can't find anyone nearby keep in mind that axiom has a 30 day in home trial that you can take advantage of.

Welcome to the forums!

Does anyone from Axiom monitor this thread to add names?

I would think Peter Bell would be the one to talk to these days, but I'm really not sure.

I will eventually add my name to the list when I have my system set up in the basement, but I would be embarrassed to have people audition it in its current state.

Hi,
The photos are for Axiom's use only, they are not mandatory and will not be sent to anyone. The only information released by Axiom is the email address which you will have supplied and which will be listed on the Super Audition Club.

In fact there are only three pieces of information which will be public : the name of your state, the name of your city/town and your email address to submit an audition request.

Hi Jakewash,

Axiom wants to stimulate the Audition Club activity, providing the members with more opportunities which will result in more rewards for them. Eventually, all the members listed on "Hearing Things / Auditioning Axioms in your area" will be contacted/invited through the email address which was provided when they originally registered.

I have started sending the invitations from the top of the list "Alabama” alphabetically working my way down. I recently completed "New York"; next it will be North Carolina.

So far, the members who have been eliminated from the list are limited to the ones who their email address bounced back.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/11/10 11:47 AM

Sounds like a good idea. I wonder which email I have listed here? I do get all the email updates/owner club newsletters, so it should be the correct one.

I haven't had a newsletter for as long as I can remember but my address didn't change. Also, you are by A's and M's now and I did not get an email regarding this topic.

So assuming I haven't been blacklisted for inadvertantly insulting you in a cartoon, should I PM you or someone else to get it refreshed?

Note: Technically, I just updated my email seconds ago to our new corporate domain. bellaliant.ca vs. aliant.ca. However, both remain functional.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/16/10 09:55 AM

Yesterday afternoon, Lampshade, a/k/a, Chris, came over to my house to audition my M60's. Turns out he lives 2.5 miles away.

He is first of all, an extremely bright and savvy man. If a woman doesn't at least ask, without feigned interest, about his audio gear, she will never see the inside of his house again.
You go, guy!

He appears to be much younger than his actual age. He told me it's because he's never been married. Point deux. And he has a really nice car with no Cheerios on the carpet at all. Trois!

When he walked into the house, he could see, out in the middle of a floor, 3 rooms away, the ass-end of an M60. He was instanly pleased to know my priorities (and just how much I manage to get away with, domestically speaking!)

He brought his Stingray. Wow---1963, split rear window, 396, Hurst, Hollies, original gold... Naw, just kidding.

He brought his Manley Stingray. And like I told you, if women don't at least comment on his Manley Stingray, no dessert. It's also the first time I have ever allowed a parallelogram into my listening room.

We listened to to Wynton Marsalis, Floyd's "Final Cut" and Mr. Waters, alone.

We listened first through my Oink 906, then all the same tracks again with the Manley. Reminded me of my 1960's era, used HK tubie with the two 19lb. transformers. Only crisper, cleaner and, well, better everything. For most of my current listening, a tube amps' subtleties would be wasted, though it was wonderful when I used to consume a lot of jazz.

If I were listenting to what Chris does, I would make the same choice. Great little parallelogram for sure.

I'll let him give you his take on the M60's. Chris?.....
Posted by: Lampshade

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/16/10 11:12 AM

The M60s are like biting into a perfectly ripened apple. Crisp percussion. Wide soundstage. Detailed beauty everywhere to be heard. I loved them. They are speakers I have always wanted and should have purchased a long time ago. They matched incredibly well with my amp and I sat listening overjoyed.

I also wanted to mention the QS8s. They are fiendish little devils. They are the first surrounds I have ever heard where you don't know there is a speaker there.

Bob was a great host and I thank him again. He also has the nicest dog I have ever met.

Hi woodsart. Hopefully someone will be available to audition their Axioms for you here. You may want to contact Axiom via phone or email, or pm a representative if you don't get any responses on the boards. I believe JC from Axiom is working on a new audition list, he might be the guy to pm. Unfortunately sometimes an audition request can get buried in the threads, so you may want to start your own, new thread....

Lampshade!!!!

You may have taken me over the edge of the 60s and hopefully the edge is near when I get that chance to hear them in Tampa. Thanks for that glowing report of the little 'devil QS8s' as well. I would like to hear them, hoping though, that they sound more like angels!!!!
Posted by: Lampshade

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/16/10 11:47 PM

Ahh Woodsart. Then I shall reveal more.

I was really looking forward to hearing the M60's, but I have to admit that I was a little biased against them. I thought that they were going to be solid performers but not spectacular.
I have a lot of experience with detailed, quick, and superbly imaging speakers. I was shocked when I heard the M60's. Were they as good in those areas as other speakers that I have? No. But almost. Breathing down their necks almost. And the M60's could do things that the other speakers can't. I wish I had bought the 60's five years ago.

Percussion was dreamy.

I have never owned a subwoofer. If I get the 60's I will never need one. I don't have a big theater room that needs pressurizing. The bass was very good. Tight. Musical.

I wish I had them for a few weeks so I could really squeeze out what they could do.

Well, Mr. Lampshade...I have to let you down a bit, I am really interested in the 80s!! But I think I need to hear the 60s as well. My room is 20X24 and oddly arranged, Because of that, I want to size down to 5.1 rather than the 7.1 I now enjoy. So, the 80's may produce a broader sound stage than the 60's. And along with QS8s, they might just work.

And I am also looking at the ERDs...Shhhhhh!! Don't tell.

One problem is trying to find a owner that is close to hear them all. Hope that will be worked out soon.
Posted by: Lampshade

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/17/10 01:17 AM

I wanted the 80's, I have never heard the 80's, but now know that I don't need the 80's. Although It would be nice to have a pair of High Gloss Orange Piano FInish 80's. My needs are probably different from yours. I don't need to shake my house of the foundation and I don't think I will ever have a center channel. The 60's are more than loud enough and low enough for me.
Good luck!

Lampshade....yeah it would be nice to squeeze all one can get from the 60s, but almost impossible without posession! And posession means purchasing. I may change my mind on the 60s when I hear them.

I'll be upgrading from the Infinity Primus line of high end entry level speakers.

You also have me wrong. We are much alike, it is that the room is large with hardwoods and high ceilings. The 80s appear to be good without a sub as well. I don't like the loud rumble rumble sound, just clear SQ! I have been encouraged to go this route by getting the 80s. As was mentioned in another thread, save your pennies and get what you want or you will be back here in this thread whinning about upgrading again and they are right.

So, I am trying to avoid that. My wife can only take so much of this! I will be ordering very soon the XPA-5 that is for starters. I look forward in hearing the Axiom line of speakers.

You might want to search the forum on this as I recall some owners of Emotiva products having shut down issues when using the M80's.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/17/10 06:01 PM

Hay!

Yes, I am aware of that, however, most are being driven by Onkyos and Avs that are not design for 4ohms (capable, but not designed). I will driving them with and Emo XPA-5 the only way to go! Not enough power and driven too high can cause the shut down, or at least those are the generalized issues with the 80s that I have read. Even my Onk806 has the 4ohm setting, but I don't think I can trust it either.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/17/10 06:18 PM

I played my M80s for two hours at 100dB from 11-12 feet w/o shutting down or clipping my Onkyo 3007. I did get it to shut down five minutes later by bumping it up to 105dB. I never got my Denon 2807 to shut down with my M80s but I couldn’t push it as hard because it would start clipping.

The shutdowns Hay is talking about are specific to certain Emotiva amps mainly the XPA-2 AFAIR. Emo claims it’s because the M80s dip down to 2ohms, however I don‘t see aht in the impedance graphs. I believe at least one Emo owner here had his XPA modified by Emo with a different protection circuit so it doesn’t suffer the shutdown problem. AFAIK not all Emo amps have this issue with the M80s just one or a few.

Yeah, it's mostly their high end amps, although I've never heard of an RPA-2 shutting down. And I don't know anyone crazy enough to have XPA-1s.

Grunt, I originally was going to use my 806, because I was told by Onkyo it would be fine, just change the ohm setting, but as I read, it began to worry me and thus stumbling on Emotiva, my bad. But, I do believe it will improve my current system considerably. The 806 doesn't do a bad job at that. And in your first statement is pretty much what I have read in all the forums with shutdowns and clipping.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/17/10 07:10 PM

A few years ago it’s my understanding that some low end receivers particularly Onkyos had a reputation for shutting down with the M80s but I don’t think that has been a problem for some time. I myself was still afraid of this which is why I put my 3007 through that stress test to see what it could handle.

I think most people do great with Emo amps even those who have M80s. As with most things on the internet things get blown out of proportion because complainers always outweigh those who praise. It’s just something you should be aware of so you can consider it and maybe even ask Emo if they can mod your amp.

I would actually be more worried about driving a Denon receiver hard with the M80s since they don’t in my experience shut down as easily making it easier to damage your speakers.

Cheer,
Dean

Dean, I have heard of a review (by Ninja)...would love the make that name smaller here. I'd like to know where the discussion is in the Axiom thread.

Wish you were near Richmond. I am antsie about hearing the M80s. JC is trying to arrange an audition in Tampa where I will be next week. I have been encouraged to listen to the M60s as well.

Thanks,

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/17/10 07:25 PM

If you do drive the M80s with ANY receiver make sure to leave the ohm setting to 8 or in Onyko's case 6ohm.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/17/10 10:34 PM

Rob, welcome. As Rick(Wid)pointed out, the lower ohm setting on a receiver should never be used. This is a fire safety type of precaution required by UL(Underwriters Laboratories)to help prevent overheating. It does this by reducing the voltage output of the power supply section of the receiver. Following Ohm's Law, when the voltage is reduced, so is the current and power. Lab tests show that the maximum power capacity is cut roughly in half. So, the possibility of overheating is reduced, but at the expense of maximum performance capability. The default 8ohm(or whatever the high setting is designated)setting should never be changed.

I believe this is the thread you are talking about Rob.

http://www.axiomaudio.com/boards/ubbthre...true#Post252179

However, IMO to understand it you need to know the context which also lead to this thread:

http://www.axiomaudio.com/boards/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=229651&fpart=1

Which all got started by a thread I can’t find right now were a person who liked what the Ninja crossover did for his M22s posted that here on the Axiom forum. Misunderstandings and IMO some fanboyism ensued eventually leading to the Ninja leaving the forum a tad pissed off.

Understand that just offering to sell his crossovers here on the Axiom site is a violation of site rules which allow no selling with the occasional exception for legitimate charities. Despite this Axiom let the thread continue but like I said the way some things were said lead to the general impression that he was saying those stock M22s you all bought sound like crap but will sound great if you buy my crossover for 2/3 the original price of the speakers. I saw this same thing come up over at the TCA website were people got pissed at his poor choice of words which basically sound the same, that the stock (I think it was an AV123 speaker in that case) sounds like crap w/o his aftermarket crossover upgrade, though I think he smoothed that one over in the end.

Personally I don’t pay any attention to reviews of speakers done in internet forums unless I have read the reviewers opinion on many different things, have some common basis for comparison, and feel that they are evenhanded in their opinions. So basically I stick to professional reviews with a few exceptions made for people who’s opinions I’ve come to respect by reading their comments over a long period of time.

Having just said you should take forum reviewers with a grain of salt ;\) , if you’re curious Sean (St_PatGuy) and I recently listened to my M80s in two different rooms and in one of them compared them with his Odyssey Loreleis.

http://www.axiomaudio.com/boards/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=18571&Number=305734#Post305734

AFAIK Axiom estimates return shipping for a pair of tower speakers is about $60 so if you can afford that then. Also AFAIK if you try out the M60s but for some reason want something that can play louder and from what I’ve read likely sounds a little more forward then you can upgrade to the M80s within 30 day an Axiom will cover the return shipping. Should you choose to then return the M80s you would be on the hook for shipping them back.

I’m curious if you have decided yet what sort of speaker sound you are looking for? IMO the M80s are forward in their presentation causing the soundstage to sound like it’s coming out toward you, and similarly produce a more “wall-of-sound” type effect than many other speakers that might be considered more laid back. I like this sort of sound both for music and especially movies. However, IMO speakers that sound like this are often more finicky about placement in that more laid back speakers IMO have a wider range of placement over which the sound good. OTOH forward speakers have IMO a narrower range of placement where they sound good but when placed well sound better. But I am biased to like forward sounding speakers which is why I was looking at B&W, Focal, Paradigm and eventually bought Axiom.

Cheers,
Dean

Another possibly redeeming tidbit for Ninja (although I honestly don't know why I want to give him even that little bit) is that he reviewed M80tis. From my conversations with Alan and Ian, I know that the v2s were a significant improvement, particularly over the earlier tis.

Thanks, Dean...I knew you guys would be able to comment and that you knew already about the N.....guy. I do have the URL with pics of that review if you are interested in reading it. The man doesn't seem half bad. The review or dissection of the 6.1 was disturbing and I for one was very excited....but not that this has lessened my interest.

However, no one in the Richmond area or Tampa area has contacted me yet to hear them, of course they may be too busy for the moment, but JC said he may be contacting me soon, however I leave for Tampa tomorrow the 22nd. I will have my laptop with me. So, hopefully I will hear soon.

Anyways I will be auditioning The Swan line while I am there-All have good reviews and they are similar in price, maybe a little less.

I really don't know whether or not the 60s or the 80s will suite my needs. My room is large and I probably will have to submit a layout to somebody to get help. It is a square room and an odd layout. probably about 3800 cubit feet. That is why I thought I needed the 80s. I do watch more movies that listen to music, but it is maybe I'm particular about the SQ in audio. My wife told me I was becoming a video snob. I think it is referred to as an audiophile!!! I may not be that, though.

Well I will be checking out this thread again today. Thanks again for your comments.

Blessings,
Rob

Woods, I can almost assure you that regardless of what speakers you end up choosing, whether they be Axiom or another brand...if they are a quality speaker that sounds "true", you'll be listening to more music than you originally expected or intended. That certainly was my case, and many others here as well. Good luck with the auditioning!

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/21/10 03:09 PM

Just wanted to say thanks for Merchman for having me over to audition his M80's. Very nice speakers. Was pleasantly surprised how great they sound even without a sub hooked up to them.

I also brought along my M22's. When hooked up only about 1 ft outside the M80's that was a very nice widened full sound stage when played together.

Now, if I could find someone locally who has some M60's to listen to.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/21/10 03:44 PM

Adrian....I was listening to Pandora some until I upgraded from Samsung to Panasonic, (who, by the way is suppose to have Pandora at some point and time), and I was getting into music. My youngest son keeps me loaded with music.

I would like to hear the 60s and the 80s to where I can make my decision. I have made up my mind about the XPA-5.

So, Adrian, concerning your unbiased opinion you see Axioms as "True"? Can you elaborate on that wisdom? What other speakers have you owned for comparison? If you don't mind me asking.

Thanks,
Rob

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/21/10 03:55 PM

I think by 'True', Adrian is refering to the fact most of Axiom's linup has a flat frequency response and plays back the source as it is was recorded, no coloration. For other 'True' speakers I would refer to Paradigm Studio series for a sound similar to Axiom. Focal has a few in their line up I would call true as do Monitor Audio with their Gold Series and a few others I have heard.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/21/10 04:09 PM

What Jay said re colouration. Monitor Audio RS series and Paradigm Studios were the two other speakers that I gave serious consideration to before my leap of faith on the M80s based Axiom setup I now have. My choice was influenced, in large part by price as well as a few forum members here who had compared the M80s to Paradigm Studio 100s favourably. I feel I would have been happy with any of these speakers, though, they all had the detailed, clean sound I was looking for just some were a little pricier. My auditioning also included Klipsh, Energy, Infinity, Mission, and a few others.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/21/10 04:39 PM

Thanks, that is helpful, you guys are great....Adrian wish you lived closer where I could take a listen. So, 'leap of faith' lead you to the purchase of the 80s without auditioning???? Or did you take a listen?

I would like to see your set-ups...have any pics. I know I am a worry wart...sorry.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 05/21/10 05:06 PM

Yes, I had some reservations about buying speakers I hadn't actually heard but the guys here had reassured me that the M80s were similar to the sound of the Studio 100s which I'd already auditioned. Now, the other thing I should mention is that Debbie at Axiom offered to open the Axiom plant on her day off(!!!) so that I could hear the M80s...I decided that since I lived within 3 hrs drive, I would simply buy the speakers(pick them up myself), try them in my own home and go from there. If I didn't like them, I'd pack them back up and return them myself, or obviously keep them if I liked them. I spent a couple of days messing around with placement as well as my new Denon AVR before I really started to appreciate the M80s, although I was surprised at the bass they could generate immediately.

My setup is pretty typical of the guys with "non-dedicated" home theatres....M80s/VP150/QS8s,(although I bought a Paradigm DSP3400 Sub on sale locally), 52" LCD and a Denon AVR and BD player. Have a look at SRoode's or RickF's for some really nice HT's.

Hi,

Axiom is also limited to the Axiom owners who have registered to offer an audition of their Axiom system.

For New York state they are:
Clarence Center - M80, VP150, QS8, EP600V - Epic 80 - 600 - 7.1
East Northport (Long Island) : M22, VP150, QS8(3) (bjkramer)
Newburg : M60, VP150, QS8, EP350 (snakeyes)
Port Chester : M3, VP100, QS8, EP175, M2 (ask Axiom)
Sands Point : M3, VP100, QS4, (ask Axiom)
Staten Island : M80, VP150, QS8, EP600 (ditcin)

I will gladly initiate the first communication with the ones showing (ask Axiom) as a contact link.

If you don't have a sub, get one. M22s + a sub are better than just M60s.
Posted by: 2packer

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/06/10 10:25 AM

I have a sub. The M22's just don't fill the room with enough sound. They are great when listening at the couch, but where my eliptical is at towards the back of the room I am reading about 70 db. When exercising I want to hit about 85.

I auditioned at Merchmans his M80's and they will work, just wondering if a set of M60's will work for what I'm looking to do.

I am also looking to upgrade my tv so any cash I can save on the speakers would help. Then I need to save for the 4 position theater seating. This hobby is addicting and not cheap.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/06/10 11:35 AM

2packer. I have auditioned all 3 speakers at Axiom using an A/B switch. The M60 and M22 are almost identical in sound and all 3 speakers are excellent performers. I'm sure the M60 would work very well for you and you would be very happy with them.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/06/10 02:10 PM

Add a sub to the M60s and you will be VERY happy! I own both the M22s and the M60s...both with subs. With the M22s, I had a hard time meshing them with my sub where it sounds like "one". No problems with the M60s. But, I agree with pmbuko...M22s with a sub would be more satisfying than the M60s alone.

Hello all,

Is there anyone in the Chicago area with any of the on-wall speakers (or smaller bookshelfs)?

I live right in the city and am looking to audition a set. As I am limited to on-wall for this particular room, hearing the bigger floor standers I see listed doesn't really help me much.

M22s, maybe. If those are allowed to be mounted horizontally (doubtful) I could make those fit too.

Thanks,

-Dave

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/08/10 09:59 PM

Dave, welcome. The Illinois audition listings don't presently show a good match for your request, but you might contact Axiom directly to see if something might be arranged.

No, it wouldn't be a good idea to mount the M22s horizontally, but vertical mounting of the regular M22s on the wall should work well in most situations.
Posted by: Dave B

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/09/10 03:12 AM

Actually, contacting them directly is how I found this thread.

Yeah, I figure going sideways would not be a good idea. Unfortunately I can't have a tall speaker mounted vertically. There are windows in the way. I can have a square-ish speaker set vertically or a horizontal one above or below the window. You can see it in this photo. I'll be replacing the Bose blocks that came with the house:

If someone in the city has any Axiom speakers at all I'd be thrilled to hear them just to get a sense of how good any of the offerings are. I would never expect the on walls to sound quite as good as the free standing ones, just due to room dynamics, but it'll at least let me know what kind of quality I'm dealing with. I've heard 100% exceptional feedback so far, but the low prices still have me wondering how good they could possibly be.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/09/10 05:22 AM

Dave, from the picture it appears that there's easily enough room below rhe windows to mount the M22s(or an even taller speaker)vertically. The tweeters should be about at ear level.
Posted by: pmbuko

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/09/10 09:59 AM

Agreed. Since the fireplace bumps out into the room by what looks to be 10 - 12", mounting the bookshelf M22s under the windows with Axiom's Full Metal Brackets would look pretty good.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/10/10 12:37 PM

Guys, rewiring to a new location below the window might be more trouble than Dave wants. I do agree that putting ANY speaker closer to ear level will result in better sound.

Dave, don't dismiss using the FMB that Peter mentioned - even above the window located near the existing wiring. If you don't want to move the wiring, having the speakers above the window tilted down so that they point at the listening position could make a world of difference in the sound. It also might allow you to use regular M2 or M3's, which would probably sound better than an inwall/onwall mounted that close to the ceiling.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/12/10 02:32 AM

Thanks for the input everyone-

I agree that being below there would be MUCH better sound. The issue is partly the wiring (though moving the fronts would actually allow me to use better wire) and partly interference with furnishings... That tan chair in the corner is not permanent, and we're still not sure what'll be going on the wall to the left of the fireplace. Quite possibly a big fish tank that goes up to the window level. Or a big plant or something. Who knows.

Trust me... if there's a way that speakers can be made to fit down there, I'll get bookshelf models on stands or a thin floor standing speaker (I think either of those would look better than an onwall floating in that spot below the window, not to mention sounding better) and wire it through the (existing) holes on either lower edge of the fireplace. That, to me, would look better than those FMBs (which I hadn't noticed before). A smaller club chair in the corner would leave room for a bookshelf on stands too.

That said, this is just a secondary listening room, and if there's something that'll sound 90% good even way up top, it might look best to use the existing wiring and put it all up there. The surrounds have to be that high either way, so there's some small aesthetic benefit to matching that.

Hard to say. But I'd still love to hear the on-walls, just because if they sound good, I'll know things can only get better by using the FMBs or monitor or FS speakers.

Brian, I'm kicking myself now for forgetting to check this site in the past few days (I forgot to bookmark it). I was actually just out that far west last night. South of you, on 88, but what's another bit of driving when already that far. I was going to be picking up a pre-amp, but it turned out he wasn't able to configure it properly and get it up and running for me. So I drove all the way out past Aurora just to drop off those Bose cubes in the photos that I'm replacing. Took me all night because of the road work. I'd have gladly hopped up 47 or something. I may contact you at some point soon... if he gets it working I'm due for another long trip out there. It's worth it for the price to sound quality ratio I'd be getting for that preamp.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/12/10 07:51 AM

You're picking up a preamp, for what? Are you going with a 2 channel set up?

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/13/10 02:43 PM

The preamp is for the main listening room. The Axioms are for the family room surround setup.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/29/10 03:22 PM

Is anyone in Northern NJ with Axiom M80, VP150/180, QS8 setup? I am considering Axiom M80/VP180/QS8 or Paradigm Studio 100/CC-690/ADP-590 and would like to know if I can audition Axioms. I recently auditioned Paradigm setup and was really really impressed with the sound quality and their look but the Paradigm prices are out of my budget, plus arrogant dealer and have to rely on dealer for repairs instead of Paradigm.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 06/29/10 03:43 PM

You should like Axiom as the M80sv2s sound very similar to the Studio 100s and the QS8s are better than the ADP series, IMO. I hope someone will be able to help you out, although with Axiom having just released a v3 speaker I highly doubt you will have anyone nearby that has the v3 speaker yet. Good luck.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 07/02/10 05:36 AM

OK, I am now interested in auditioning any Axiom model, not just the ones I can mount on a wall. I think I've got some freedom now with the speaker options. (I've had my ugly Polks upstairs for a week and she hasn't complained... easing back to something much more attractive but still floorstanding could still work. Diabolical!)

Anyway, the closer to Chicago city the better, but I do need to take a trip way south to University Park at some point, so if that one person in Wilmington is around, I could combine those trips. Otherwise, how might I go about tracking down the person in Arlington Heights?

Thanks,

-Dave

One good reason, I would expect someone who wants to be able to purchase some extremely "cheap" real estate.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 07/15/10 10:39 PM

HHP, welcome. See the listings at the beginning of the audition thread above. Two are in Connecticut, and the usual procedure is to try to make direct contact by PM, email or asking Axiom for assistance.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 07/16/10 01:29 PM

Hi JohnK'

HHP has contacted me but I could not provide him with an available registered audition club memeber in Connecticut. I suggested that he should ask for an audition on the Axiom forums. I hope that a member of the Forums will be able to offer him an audition. Thanks for your suggestion to contact Axiom.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 07/16/10 02:21 PM

Auditioning right now with Axiom on v3 and most of us on v2 or older makes it somewhat pointless. I think right now a would be buyer needs to make the leap and listen for themselves in their own house, which is the best way anyway.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 07/16/10 02:23 PM

I don't really think so. At least they'll get an idea of the Axiom sound. It's hardly changed THAT much!

Not according to the reviews by Alan and Gene etc., they make it sound like there is a big difference.

I’m with you Jay. Based on the reviews I’d be hard pressed to tell someone that my speakers sound like the new ones. OTOH when comparing my new M2v3 to my M22v2 I couldn’t tell them apart when crossed over to the sub at 80Hz. Now I only listened for about 30 minutes so there could be some more subtle differences but nothing stood out to me. Granted the M2v3 may not reflect all the changes made to the M80v3 like crossover tweaks. So my experience my not carry over to the M80s.

I am very jealous of all those going to the anniversary party as they will get to hear all the new speakers and find out first hand.

Hi - I am interested in audition for M80s in Orange County, California? I did not see any list on page 1 that has M80.
Secondary, would like to audition VP150 and QS8, if available. Mainly it is M80s.

Thanks,

Any M60's in that area, that would give you a close idea of how great the M80's and M60's sound.

Probably the most direct route would be to send a PM(message under "My Stuff" heading)to Jc(Jean-Claude Benoit), who's now in charge of the audition list. You should be aware that many of the listings aren't up-to-date and may no longer be available for an audition. In any case, you can ask if there are any other possibilities in your area.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 08/06/10 11:31 PM

yep, tomorrow, scamp will be at my house auditioning my Axiom speakers. I hope he will enjoy them and perhaps seriously consider them for purchase based on the experience. here is a break down of my gear for you all:

Onkyo PR-SC5507P Pre-Amp
Emotiva Amps:
XPA-5
UPA-2
Sony SXRD 55" RPTV 1080p
Oppo BDP-83 blu-ray player
Toshiba HD-A35 HD-DVD player
PS3 slim 120gb
Xbox 360 Elite 120gb
Cable HD-DVR
Monoprice XLR interconnects & HDMI cables
Calabrine Bi-Wire cables for front 3
Monoprice 14awg cables for all surrounds

Axiom Speakers:
M80v3 Towers
VP180v3 Center
QS8v3 Side Surrounds
Polk Audio TSi100 Back Surrounds
Emotiva Ultra Sub 10 Subwoofer

Harmony One Remote

that is the basic breakdown of my system. Here's to hoping we can win scamp over to our camp. I'll do my best! I've got quite a line up for him and his son tomorrow with a movie (a full movie too), two and multichannel music from Blu-ray, SACD (DSD), DVD-A. scamp has agreed to the choices I have selected from my collection and he will bring some CD's of his own and he has requested that we listen to a scene of a movie which I have. The music will range from classical, to rock to jazz to modern/contemprary music. Oh yes, I will be treating him to the Nordic Sound 2L in 2 channel with the M80v3 Towers set to full with NO SUB (let me tell you, that blu-ray sounds incredible in 2 channel); of course there will be many others musically for he and his sons enjoyment! I am providing pizza for lunch and scamp is providing dessert. i will post my thoughts of how things went and how i think scamp enjoyed (or didn't) himself though, i'm thinking they will have enjoyed themselves very much. until tomorrow....

Welcome to the forum.

Very cool to have a member interested in Axiom all the way from Saudi Arabia. I imagine there might not be too many owners of Axiom products from there. If you have not already, phone or email Axiom regarding this inquiry.

Hi Dr. House,

Axiom has the highest respect for its clientele's privacy. As you know Axiom does not use any information provided by its customer to contact him outside its current transaction unless the customer has authorized such action. When a transaction is completed Axiom will not contact the customer anymore respecting his right to privacy.

It is the same rule which governs the audition process. Axiom strictly limits its action at contacting Axiom owners who have specifically and previously registered offering such a valuable service.

Unfortunately, we don't have any Saudi Arabia Axiom owners registered at this time - http://www.axiomaudio.com/boards/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=184230&page=1.

Hopefully, Ram Raju will be one of the first ones !

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 08/07/10 06:10 PM

well, finished my first audition about an hour ago and it went very well. scamp and his son were very impressed with the Axioms. they enjoyed a very active 7.1 "Hellboy II" and really loved the sounds that all of the Axioms I had were giving to faithfully reproduce the soundtrack. we listened to a variety of music to from CD's, SACD's and DVD-A sources. they had a lot to say about the speakers. I was very happy and proud to host this effort in the name of Axiom; I do hope to do this again, it was a lot of fun and i dare suspect I might have even made a friend! It's also good to put an actual face with a "screen name!" I think Scamp is very, very close to joining us here in the Axiom camp!

Oh yes, for those who wanted to know (FREDK)I bought Pizza for lunch and Scamp brought some very yummy cupcakes for dessert! a good time was had by all.

I'd been on the fence about 5.1 vs 7.1, but this made it easy. The back channel really added to the film without hitting you over the head. The field was very even an enveloping. 7.1 is it for me.

We started with a CD of sample music we brought (iTunes lossless burned to CD), and then listed to the DVD-A. Wowser! What a difference. It made the CD sound muddy by comparison.

I finally decided to buy M80v3 and I will be getting my m80v3 in a week from now. We do have a lot of other dealers selling a wide range of speakers here in Saudi. I decided to buy m80s after I have read all the positive reviews on the board. I hope to enjoy the best of Axiom products.

An Axiom owner all the way from the middle east. That is really cool! Lets hope you enjoy the great "Canadian sound".

Congratulations once again.

Congrats buddy! I can't wait to see your review of the M80v3's! I picked up a pair of them with the VP180v3 & QS8v3's and I just can't stop loving them! The M80's offer incredible price to performance value and you just won't believe you got that much speaker for that low of a price after you get them and get them rolling!

please keep us posted. Just think, your gonna be the first "kid on your block" with Axioms (just like me!), it's gonna be cool! wink

please & thank you!

Hello,
I'm in Pa. and want to get a message to Zarak to see if I could stop over and hear his system. I did not know how to send a PM on this forum page.

Thank you,

If you click on a users name, there is an option to send a PM. If you can't find a recent post by a user, there is a users list near the top.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 11/02/10 09:18 AM

i just hosted my 3rd audition last night, it went well. the potential customer really enjoyed my system and was thrilled with the sound from my axioms. i think we will have a new member to the family soon! It really worked out just right, the day of the audition, when i got home i got my commission check from one of my other auditions and that customer purchased an entire 7 channel axiom speaker system. i am hopeful that this gentleman will also make a purchase.

one of the things i will tell you i like about the auditions is when you see that people are really seeing and hearing something new, either for the first time or like it was the first time and that they really love your system it makes you feel proud and reinforces your belief that you put together a good system. i am hopeful to do more auditions in the future; almost wish i could open a business doing it! wink

here's a peek at what my potential customers get to audition and oh yes, i serve pizza with every audition! http://www.blu-ray.com/community/gallery.php?member=solarrdadd

you are correct, but, if the person you held the audition for buys axiom after auditioning with you then you get a commission from that sale. speak to JC who can fill you in on the details and requirements.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 11/05/10 09:52 PM

Thanks guys, I probably worded my response incorrectly as I've been registered here for quite awhile and received my fair share of Axiom bucks for auditions I performed wink

If someone new was seeing the post I wanted to make it clear that you no longer receive a cheque but rather Axiom certificates after the prospective buyer makes their order and keeps the speakers after the 30 days.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 11/05/10 09:58 PM

Graeme, under the present Audition Club methodology Axiom credit is granted for a verified audition, but as the above link describes, a 5% commission in actual money is granted if the audition results in a sale.

Hmmm, I guess it pays to actually follow the link and read blush

I remember back when they used to give $$ and then changed the option. Interesting to see they went back to that style.

Time to update myself for the audition club...thanks for following up John to show I really didn't know what was going on ha-ha

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 12/12/10 02:50 PM

Welcome, Ashvin. Not everyone frequents the boards that are on Axiom's audition list, so just in case you don't get a response, or someone misses your request, you might want to call Axiom directly. Sometimes they can refer you to an audition(er?) in your area.

As a sidenote, I have found(as some others have) that Axiom speakers have a similar sound to some of Paradigm's Studio lineup(M80 vs Studio 100s) if that helps any...

You may want to start your own thread as well, I think more people will see it.

Does one need to be a member of the Audition Club to get credits ?

I auditioned my set up to a couple of friends and I may have one making a purchase soon.

I could use the credit to upgrade my center to the 180 !

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 12/23/10 04:11 PM

Hello, Slitman.

No, you don't have to be a member of the Audition Club to get credit (as far as I know), as your purchase history is kept on an Axiom database. When you hold an addition for someone, and that person ends up purchasing Axiom speakers as a result of your influence (or your speakers), all they have to do when they place their order is mention that you held an audition for them.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 04/01/11 08:30 AM

reminds me of the "audiophile" in a forum who wrote that good amplifiers need a warm up time of 2 weeks before they sound good, that's how long it takes for the temps to stabilize in an amp.

i thought that as he uses the amp, its temperature would vary all the time as a function of varying power output, and thus would destabilize the amp and produce distortion.

but what do i know, i'm not a golden eared audiophile who can discern the difference between 0.0025% and 0.0000025% THD in an amp.

Yesterday morning i installed a new QSC GX5 amp (to replace a Hafler 500 which will go to surround duty).
After about 6 hours of concentrated listening of different program material, i could not hear any difference between the 2 amps, and i let the amp "warm up" for only a few minutes.
Posted by: Adrian

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 04/01/11 09:14 AM

J.B....How loud is the fan on your QSC?
Posted by: J. B.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 04/01/11 09:59 AM

the fan noise is different than that of my pc; on the pc, it's a whooshing noise, wind noise from high speed fans as i use the processor for Folding and need lots of cooling.
on the GX5, it sounds more like purring, but i find it very difficult to qualify it well.
when there is no sound, i can hear it clearly, but not loud; as soon as there is some sound, then i can't hear the fan.
if i ever get annoyed with it, then i'll change the fan for a quiet one.
the amp is about 6 ft in front of me, below the tv and it's just a bit louder than the fans on my Hafler 500 where the fans are on the back of the amp (the second fan on the Hafler was installed there to supplement the Hafler one in case it would stop working, as the Hafler gets warm even when idle).

on the QSC, the fan is inside the case with the air exiting both in front and in the back.
the amp is so efficient that some people using it on their HT have disconnected the fan and it stays cool.
Posted by: J. B.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 04/01/11 06:45 PM

i just found the nearest comparison to the fan noise in the GX5; it is very similar to the noise my S-VHS machine does when on PAUSE.
when on pause, the head drum keeps rotating and it's this noise that resembles a lot to that of the GX5.

*******************************

Anyone wants my S-VHS machine?
it's a JVC, about 10 years old, it is in very good condition, except that the osd does not work anymore.
For sale for the princely sum of $1.00
the buyer must pick it up.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 04/04/11 09:34 AM

Forgot to say this:

i also have around 40-50 TDK Q-HG cassettes that have been used only twice: to record music on, and to listen to it.

Cassettes are included in the price for the S-VHS machine.

hello everyone, I'm new here, and new to Axiom. I live in Houston,TX and see that there is a member who lives in Pasadena that would consider letting people hear their Axiom set-up....

After reading this whole thread, I'm guessing it will be hit or miss whether or not it will actually happen. smile

Anyway, I'm starting with NOTHING and doing my homework.... I've been all over the prosumer speaker sites and somehow landed here. I might have "heard" of Axiom's before but I can't say for sure. (Axiom can thank the internet for new potential business) But anyway, I'm here and will have to make a decision one way or another. Looking forward to learning more....

Thanks!

(Axiom can thank the internet for new potential business) But anyway, I'm here and will have to make a decision one way or another. Looking forward to learning more....

Thanks!

Welcome, Scot. Not sure if I have seen any active posters around Houston. If you are looking for an audition, don't hesitate to contact Axiom.

Welcome Scot. We all were "lurkers" around here at some point.... 7 years later, I am still here. smile

Don't hesitate to start new threads and ask questions, we are all willing to help, and over time you will find very honest, unbiased (mostly) ideas, insights, and help.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 10/05/11 09:58 PM

Greg, welcome. If you look at the Michigan listings in the first post, you'll see that among them is one for M80s in Taylor. The usual procedure is to try to make direct contact by sending a PM, since a post here is often not noticed. Unfortunately that member(902599)hasn't posted in over three years and may no longer check for messages. You might try contacting Axiom directly to see if they can assist in making contact with him or possibly someone who isn't on the list.

Welcome.

The first page of this thread lists people willing to give auditions but I do not see anyone in San Diego, there are a couple from LA area and the usual scenario is to send them a PM about having a demo.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 11/04/11 10:06 PM

RO, welcome. Note that a good system with M60s is listed, together with an email address, for Santa Ana. If this isn't suitable, keep in mind that many Axiom owners(including me)ordered without an audition, confident in the knowledge that the speakers could be returned within the 30-day home trial period if dissatisfied(highly unlikely in my view).

Hello and welcome! We have three audition members from Calgary:

Calgary : VP150, QS4, M3 (cup)
Calgary : M22, M80, VP100, VP150, QS8(3) (jakewash)
Calgary : M60, VP100, QS4, EP350 (framer2180)

Do any of those setups interest you? If so I would be happy to reach out to them for you.

Kind regards,

Amie

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 11/29/11 12:10 AM

Amie, I was glad to see your post. In the past I frequently suggested that Axiom be contacted for possible assistance if a prospective purchaser wasn't able to make personal contact with an auditioner listed in his area. On some more recent occasions, however, they reported that they received no useful help in that regard.

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 11/29/11 05:10 AM

Definitely something we will work on, John! We are sometimes limited by whether or not we have auditioners in the area, but if we do we will definitely reach out to them for customers who would like an audition. Maybe our New Years Resolution should be to program a whiz-bangy-piece-of-code that automates the process for customers . . .

Great idea Amie.

And make sure that link puts JohnK at the top of the list each time regardless of area b/c i don't see him on the main list right now.
John needs way more exposure.

Rob, welcome. Looking at the California list at the beginning of the thread, there's nothing really close shown. Even the Long Beach listing is very old and may no longer be active. You might try contacting Axiom directly to see if there's a possibility which isn't on the list.

Keep in mind that most Axiom owners(including me)didn't buy as a result of an audition. After studying the M22 SoundStage review with NRC measurements found here , I was confident enough to order for the 30-day home trial. Now, after 10 years and over 25,000 hours of listening, I remain delighted by these excellent speakers.

Gilbert, welcome. The list of owners who are willing to audition their Axioms, shown in the first post here, does include "asiatic" in Singapore. The usual procedure is to send a PM to see if something can be arranged, but if the member rarely checks in here(asiatic hasn't posted in about a year), he may not see it. Possibly you might contact Axiom directly to see if they can assist you.
Posted by: tomtuttle

Re: Auditioning Axioms In Your Area - 11/23/12 03:50 PM

It seems pretty unlikely that LFR1100s would be available for audition in Singapore. Good luck, Gilbert.

Jeremy, welcome. If you look at the list at the beginning you'll see a listing for Huntsville and two in Nashville. Now these might not still be active and wouldn't see a PM if you tried to contact them. A better plan would be to send Amie at Axiom a message and she might be able to assist you in making contact, as she did with the preceding request.

If you check the list at the beginning of this thread you'll see that Mark Johnson is in Concord. Mark participates frequently and may notice your post, but the typical way to establish contact is to send a PM directly to Mark.

Are you able to do an audition *right now*?

I know this guy... All you have to do is go down in your basement, turn the corner (to the left, I think) at the bottom and walk straight ahead. You should see a nice theater space all set up and ready for you. Enjoy!

Wanting to listen to V4 of M22 speaker - 12/16/14 03:27 PM

I live in the downtown Toronto area and was wondering if anyone would let me audition their version 4 of the M22 speakers? It is more a case of "In Ian's/Andrew's ears I trust", as I am completely happy with my M22ti (Version 1 ??). Each time I've upgraded the source (most recently with a Bit Perfect computer based audio), I've been impressed at how the the revealing nature of M22ti and how well it stands up to high priced gear exhibited at audio shows over the last decade. The new tweeter (and woofer) piqued my interest as they seem to have evolved out of the recent Bryston collaboaration which are being widely and warmly received/reviewed....in doubt...due to Axiom's experience: I felt the Axioms, within their LF response limits, sounded better than about 90% better than most of the gear at the recent 2014 TAVES audio show. It would be ideal if I could plug them into my system but I am not opposed to lugging my gear over (compact amp and source) and perhaps even my M22ti. Thanx in advance.
