Our church is looking at replace the 30 year old Allen organ. No pipes.

We have looked at Rodgers, Allen, and Viscount models so far.

Two keybords with pull stops and tons of electronics on theses newer models.

This is probably a $50,000 purchase.

Anyone with any experience in this area?

I believe my old church bought a Rodgers, although I'm not certain about that. At the time, it had superior numbers of voices (more than 12!), and had a better sound. Our organist was fairly exacting; she was a music professor as her other job, so we had to get an organ that suited her. I'll double check with my father as to the brand.

My only complaint about the organ was that the chimes didn't sound right at all.

EDIT: Yup, it was a Rodgers, purchased in the early 90s.

I think you should have Tacoma's Paul Fritts build you one. Tremendous!

I'm pretty sure he's out of your price range. Still...

Thanks Ken! The Rodgers 678 has 112 voices including 50+ orchestral instruments, and the ability to record and playback on a usb thumbdrive.

Tom......WAY over our budget

Or rather, not voices, but simultaneous notes--the Allen only had 12. Mixing things up.

I can find out more from the organist if you want.

What I would like to know is if the organ ever needed service and if so, was it satisfactory?
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Church Organs - 05/03/09 02:56 AM
I'll see what I can find out.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: Church Organs - 05/03/09 02:59 AM
Word is, there was a guy who came in a few times early on to fine tune it, fix up a few things after the install, but my father says he doesn't recall it ever needing service. They moved churches about 5 years ago.

Also, he says he was on the selection committee for the thing, and my parents were pretty close to the organist.

Oh, yeah. This is a church organ thread.

I was waiting for you to come up with something...
Posted By: bugbitten Re: Church Organs - 05/04/09 04:31 PM
I almost did not post because the topic could get way out of control.
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Church Organs - 05/04/09 05:07 PM
I had to get it over with. Now you have complete control of the thread again, as per the normal Axiom custom.

I do believe that this is yet another new topic that somehow we have knowledge about. I swear, one could ask a question about the appropriate type of O-rings that should be used on aft cabin door handle seals on a Boeing 747-400. Someone here would know. \:\/

I am simply astounded at the number of things that we, as the collective group, know about.

Kudos. \:\)

I could find that out for you, I have a couple of friends that are aircraft technicians \:\)

Scientist are now giving more attention to this phenomenon, it's called something like six degrees of separation. (I try to google a good article about it , found this one, but didn't have time to read it, maybe someone would pitch in with a good article, wiki doesn't seems to be a good one)
They believe that areas of the brain communicate using this paradigm. It's very efficient, and of course computer networks are now studying this to develop better network algorithms and such.

Maybe it's time we takeover the world?

My father in law is pastor at a church and they had to put in a new pipe organ not long ago after a fire in the church wiped out what they had.

If you are looking to build a pipe organ, I can track down more info.

I think those are generally waaaaay over bug's budget, sadly. I'm lucky that my church has one, and one with 32ft stops at that. \:\)

Thursday works for me!

Hmmmm...Thursday isn't good for me.

How's early Friday?

Well, wait. I might be able to rearrange things on Thursday.

Yeah. I guess if Thursday works best for you, we can take over the world on Thursday then.

Should we schedule a lunch in there?

*pencils Mark in for lunch*

Okay, but let's stay away from Olive Garden.

Gives me gas.

Is Thursday some kind of holy organ day?
Posted By: fredk Re: Church Organs - 05/06/09 02:02 AM
Depends. Was your organ blessed?
Posted By: pmbuko Re: Church Organs - 05/06/09 03:06 AM
No, but I'm blessed with an organ.
Posted By: CV Re: Church Organs - 05/06/09 03:56 AM
I WAS blessed, but then I met the organ grinder.

So you're saying we're not gonna let JP be a part of this? \:\)

So exactly which one of you is Pinky and which is The Brain??
[Runs away recalling....]

Posted By: Ken.C Re: Church Organs - 05/06/09 03:40 PM
I suspect we're all Pinky around here.

But how will we keep the suspenders made from amplifier parts on the jello?

Ha, just found this thread. Good stuff.

Because when shellfish attack, it's better to have lobsters on your piano than crabs on your organ.

Posted By: bugbitten Re: Church Organs - 05/12/09 11:05 PM
Just to let all of you know that it appears to be a toss up between Allen's organ and Rodgers' organ.

Have fun with that! \:D
