I hope Sony scraps the cell all together and move towards PC style developmental tools. It would end up being a big plus for game developers if they do.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/03/13 01:47 PM
Of course they will. They'll find some other insane architecture to use and then not really support or bolster. It's how Sony works.
Posted By: BlueJays1 Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/03/13 01:57 PM
Rumours have Sony running AMD. I hope this is true. Xbox 720 will be running similar architecture according to gamespot. The cell architecture was such a disaster.

CPU: 8 x64 AMD
GPU: AMD R10xx, 18 Shader Cores

Looks like there is an unveiling Feb 20th. Glad to see they are moving away from the inefficient PS3.

I'd like to see a new edition of Tourist Trophy.
Never did buy a PS3.
Posted By: terzaghi Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/11/13 02:12 AM
I'm excited to see what sony unveils on the 20th. I know I will be getting the next xbox on launch day but I'll wait and see what is revealed for the PS4 before I decide to spring for the next sony console.

I primarily use my PS3 as a bluray player, but am sure that I will be able to use the next xbox for this purpose. The only games I currently buy on the PS3 are sony exclusives.

I imagine I will only buy nintendo exclusives for my Wii U and will buy all crossplatform games on next xbox. If the next playstion has enough cool features or exclusive titles I will probably end up with one too.

A post I read on another forum suggested it would be an ideal time to release a PS4k...
I realize theres a pretty slim chance of this happening but I really like the idea.

Gonna need a second job if it does.

Yes. I think that's a very good guess. I think a full use of 4k would be out of reach, so I'll predict that they will use some sort of intelligent upscaling that gives enough improvement of the user experience to give people the motive to buy 4k TVs. Ideal would be something that would only work on Sony 4k TVs.

The announcement will be streaming here:

Posted By: brwsaw Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 03:42 AM
I was a bit disapointed by the anouncement.
I was glad to see the PS4 might be reverse compatible.
I just found a nice place to pick up old games and would really like to collect some old favorites.
I do like the potential for andriod and tablet control, even if it is only as a remote for the Bluray player.
If the bluray offers to be on par with current hi end players the cost won't be a detterent.
Not owning a PS3 makes me want one regardless.
Posted By: ClubNeon Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 08:05 AM
It's not going to be backward compatible with PS3 games on disc, so I wouldn't stock up yet. If it does let you play PS3 games it will be via the streaming service. Perhaps there will be a way to unlock the ability to play a game by placing its disc in the drive, but save your pennies for now.

I looked at the Killzone screen shots on Flickr, they're original resolution was 3840x2160, so there's a good chance the PS4 does 4k output.

I'm also betting the price will be under $300 at launch. It's not that powerful of a machine, and with today's gaming market no one is going to pay $600 for a home console.

I will likely buy one, but the lack of power is making me think about building a gaming PC. I've not seriously gamed on a PC since 1996 (basically when I started working on PCs for a living, and tuning/troubleshooting a machine to just play a game felt too much like work). Though, the Steam Box thingy looks interesting, I might go that way.

One thing we should all recall is that back when the PS3 was being introduced, a good amount of the hype turned out to be vaporware. Then stuff that did come true started being phased out.

Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of the PS3 but here are just two of many examples of the actual Sony released hype being misleading.

- Backwards compatibility. Well, that didn't last very long did it?

- Those super smooth high def games they used as "this is actual Game play folks!" demos before it hit the stores, were not even real!!! The Killzone demo or whatever it was, was a fake and it never got released in any form for years and when it did, it certainly didn't look like the demos.

Anyways, I'm not saying it won't be great again. I'm just saying that now is the time for caution in our expectations.
Posted By: ClubNeon Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 02:33 PM
I think they did a pretty good job to manage expectations this time. First, there were no real hard numbers given, other than 8, x86 cores, and 8 GB of unified GDDR5 RAM. They didn't even mention the CPUs are AMD (which they are), or the clock speed. The said the GPU, is in the CPU core (or combined APU as they call it), and does 2.3 TFLOPS (I think that was the number quickly quoted), so it's a mid-range AMD part too.

I followed some games journalists on Twitter as the show was going on. This year's Killzone demo was met with, "that'd be impressive if it was four years ago." So no unrealistic expectations there either. The only tech demo that looked pretty advanced was the one from Quantic Dream, but that's how all their stuff is, and they're expected to fail to deliver by this point. David Cage has a lot of vision, but not much to back it up.

Heck, they didn't even show the physical hardware or much of the UI. The whole thing was more of "hey, the PS4 is coming," than anything else.
Posted By: BlueJays1 Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 02:33 PM
The PS4 and Xbox 720 are going to be so similar from an architecture standpoint this time around, a big portion of my purchasing decision will weigh on the controller and whether the console will block the play of used games and require a mandatory internet connection.

The PS4 controller design is more of the same, but the mini touch screen is a neat addition However, Sony announced they WILL NOT block the play of used games. A major plus (precedent) for the future of console gaming this generation.

Posted By: nickbuol Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 03:53 PM
I remember when the PS3 came out and people said "nobody will buy a $600 console" and yet they were priced at $600. I know because 2 days after release, I was at a Best Buy for something else, and there they were. PS3s... For $600...

I didn't watch the announcement and haven't looked into it much since it is still early, but as others mentioned, if the PS3 pre-lauch hype and information is any indicator, then the PS4 won't be that "OMG awesome." It will still sell like nuts just because the world is in this mode of "I must have the latest XYZ product or I am a loser" (Apple is great at tapping into this mentality and making killer profits doing so. Why not Sony or Microsoft, right?)

We have a Wii and Xbox360 at home that see little play time. I spend almost 100% of my gmaing hours on my PC.
Posted By: ClubNeon Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 04:09 PM
The PS3 at launch was pretty much equal to high-end PCs. The PS4 right now, it only equal to mid-range PCs, and by the end of the year it'll be below mid-range. The new Xbox is in the same league. With the Wii U being only a bit faster than the current PS3/Xbox 360, it's obvious the target for consoles has shifted. They no longer are trying to shoot for the stars, they just want to build something that's easy to program, and easy to hook up to a TV.

You're right about one thing, these days if someone has $600 to spare they'll buy an iPad.

An official announcement has been made about 4k.

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/ps4-will-output-video-in-4k-but-not-games/

That's what I wanted anyway, hopefully it'll be able to play UHD BDs, if that spec makes it through.

I'll probably get a RedRay for most of my 4k movie viewing anyway.
Posted By: GregLee Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 05:58 PM
Sony's BD player BDPS790 upscales to 4k, so maybe they will just carry over that feature to the PS4. It's too bad if the video from games can't also be upscaled.
Posted By: ClubNeon Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/21/13 07:01 PM
Yeah, it'll probably upscale BDs, and other video, like the PS3 does for 1080p now. They didn't say, but I'm guessing the BD-ROM drive in it is at least 2x speed, that's enough to also do the 4k UHD BD spec that's floating around in draft form right now.
Posted By: Ken.C Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 02/24/13 03:46 AM
I'd be amazed if any GPU these days could really push a game at 4K consistently. But I've been wrong before, and I'm a little skewed by the complexity of the models I have access to with high end cards.

Bejeweled 3 at 4K would be nice.

The God of War video before was very nice.
To my surprise non of the video shown in this version of the PS4 release looked good. Would have better represented PS2 graphics.

The new System is in the same team. With the Wii U being only a bit faster than the existing PS3/Xbox 360.
Posted By: brwsaw Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 06/25/14 03:32 PM
I don't find that I play the PS4 that much. Many of the games I'll play haven't been released.
Most of the games I have played are free or demo's.
I've purchase 2 physical copies and one digital download to date.
Still peeved I can't have the best of both worlds with disc based games playable from the hard drive with out swapping discs.

Rumor is we'll get our first taste of virtual reality on the PS4 this fall with big titles releases fall 2015.
I hope the separate voice (headset/ear buds) and game audio by then. Hearing kids chat through my towers is horrible.
Posted By: BlueJays1 Re: PS4 anouncement expected Feb 4th - 08/04/14 11:38 PM
Watching tv today and my PS4 turned on by itself and ejected The Last Of Us out of the disk drive. I tried to put the disk back in but the disk drive seemed dead. Then a few seconds later the PS4 began to eject with no disk in the console. It continued to do so until I powered it down. Then when the console was off it just started making two loud beeps every so often. Turned the console on and was then able to put the disk back in and the console began to run normal again.

Has this happened to anyone else?

They've really got to get to work on releasing an extension cable for both the PS4 camera and the XBone Kinect. Without, both add ins are useless in my system, and I'm sure a lot of other people's set-ups too.

Anyone here planning on getting an Atmos capable receiver should try out Tomb Raider on the PS4.

It already sounds great, I do think this game will be the perfect compliment to the DSU.
