Folks,

Obviously, one of the strongest virtues of the Axiom speakers is their prices. So, triggered by chesseroo's recent poll, I wish to ask you Axiom fans for your honest opinions as to how much more (or less) you believe you have to pay in order to get speakers that will clearly outdo the Axiom flag-ship models. If you are NOT an Axiom fan, that would be even better -- just that I would appreciate it if you so comment. In fact, I would very much appreciate it if Alan could comment on this, too!

I do not expect everybody votes on every one of these, but just for the sake of completeness...

sushi,
I see you've found the ubb code for setting up polls...with a vengeance.

How come you did not put in a vote for "nothing outdoes the Axiom xyz, they are perfect"?

The errors are due to the fact that no one has voted yet. "Division by zero"

I never realized how mixed a system you have Saturn.
Do you have any plans to integrate the same brand speakers more into your system or have you found a setup that works for you?

Mixed up..yes I am...as with my system...I have yet to integrate. But it is in the works:
MA Silver S6 ...all boxed up ready to be returned..awaiting the TB2 on a slow boat from china...I mean UK)
M22 (pretty much gone, awaiting closure of a deal)
B&W CC6 going to my brother (being replaced with TB2 center)
I might go with DB1 for rears but the $1400 expenditure is something I can not justify for just rear surrounds. I still might be happier with the QS4.
Well see.

Hmm... I already see some interesting trends in the current results, although the numbers are small.

Keep the votes coming!

Just a quick question...Is there ANYTHING comparable to the QS8 near it's price?

If you like dispersive speakers, not in my opinion. If you're a big fan of direct surround speakers, then I would say yes.

I suspect that jbzngowest might be asking whether there are any surround speakers on the market with similar "quad-pole" driver configurations as the QS series. Is anybody aware of any?

Way off topic here. When I was in college we lived in a quad which was 2 bedrooms, 2 to a room and a common area. We had an old atari 2600. The only game we'd play was warlords because you can have 4 players playing simultaneously. The winner of the evening would be crowned with a burger king hat with "king of the quad" written across the front. I retired king of the quad, but foolishly threw out the hat because I thought I was too mature. That was a good time.

I know Monitor Audio carries a dispersive surround speaker similar to Axiom but its drivers are set in the cabinet differently.

I don't have Axioms yet so I was wondering what is with the low results for the EP350?
From other posts I've also noticed less favorable reviews of it. If someone was going to build basically one of either the two flagship home theatre packages would a different sub go better with it than the 350?

Thanks

Chess is correct and I have demoed Silver FXi surrounds. It is as powerful and has wide dispersion with great clarity and detail. The only issue is the price at more than twice the QS8. I personnaly could not tell the difference when both where only 1 - 1.5 feet above ear level. But if you plan to place the speakers 4-6 above listening level I would tend to reckon the qs8 would do a better job since the drivers are firing down and up rather than the bi-pole di-pole speakers the MA has.

The only rear surround speaker that I have demoed which seemed relatively close in price to the qs8 with slightly less ummppphhhh is the Warfedale Diamond surrounds. Qs8 detail is a little higher.

Thanks for the Monitor Audio link. Yeah, the Silver FXi looks like a typical wall-handing dipole/bipole design. I believe that quite a few brands have surrounds similar to this, including the Boston Acoustics and Onyx Rocket just to name a few. The Axiom QS series is quire different, though...

When I move, I'll spring for a pair of QS8s. In the meantime, I use a pair of Mission 77ds, a good looking wall hanger with a pair of 100mm (4") drivers and a pair of tweeters in bipolar configuration. They actuall sound terrific. They originally listed for about $350. Could be found on ubid for a while for about $40 a pair.

Tough to beat close out prices of discontinued speakers being dumped on internet jobber sites.

Similarly, Michaura speakers which appear to have used the same drivers as Axiom uses (5.25" and 6.5"), in very rigid hex shaped cabinets covered in beautiful rosewood like finish, came in M22, M50 and M60 like configurations. These speakers were blown out by ubid for as little as $19 each for the M22 like M55s, $50 each for the M50 like M66s and $100 each for the M60 like M665s.
