I used to have a pair of the old AX5 Reference in the rectangualr box, light oak finish, with the 10" aluminum woofer 'round the back. That was in 1988 or 89. Awesome. Fuelded them with a Cyrus One integrated and was able to achieve impressive levels on it's 25 watts per channel.
List price was $1500.00 and they usually sold around $1200.00 if memory serves.

Me again.
Ian, correct me if I am wrong but, I think they won an award from Sound and Vision back then too as product of the year.

They were definitely award winners! We won that award, as well as a CES Engineering and Design award. Julian Hirsch actually said they were the flattest loudspeakers he'd ever measured.

The brochure mentions them as the speaker of choice at Le Studio at Morin Heights.

One thing has always puzzled me Ian, the speakers in the picture are bookshelf models, and the AX5's definitely are not? Am I wrong, or is the picture incorrect?

This speaker had 3 drivers:
1-tweeter 1" ,1- midwoofer 5" , 1 aluminum subwoofer 10".

The sub was enclosed in its own cabinet within the speaker, rear firing and was crossed over at 180hz. It was a 4ohm, output of 87db, and measured 30"x12"x11.25" (HWD). Response was advertised at 32-22khz +2db. Front ported.
