Hi,

I'm looking to buy a new speaker set up right now, and am down to Axioms (M60 or M80, VP150, QS8) or Rockets (850 Sig, RSC200 Sig Bigfoot, RSS300). It would be great to hear, see, feel some Axioms before I pull the pin either way... is there anyone in/near Regina that would be willing to show off their system to me?

Thanks!!!
Ayan

Welcome Ayan

Have you checked page one of the Audition Thread sticky at the top of this section? Generally, it is best to send a PM to a person in your area. If you don't see anyone, you can send Amie or Andrea a PM at Axiom, they sometimes have people that are not on the list.

Good luck

Hey Sirquack,

Thanks for the welcome! I actually did check the sticky, and have PM'd both of the Reginians listed... but neither of them has been active here lately, so they may not be around any more. I've also emailed Amie, but thought I'd put up a public request as well.

Yeah, Zs are a lot of fun. I wanted one since I was a kid, and finally got mine about 4 years ago. It's very retro!

cheers

3.5 hours east here...we're getting closer.... \:\)

Actually i'm going to be in Regina this coming weekend for my company xmas party, unfortunately we're chartering a bus from Manitoba so I don't think it would make sense to bring my M60s along for the ride. If only i had M3s....

Ayan, in case you aren't aware of it there was an audio shop in Regina that used to carry Axiom product back in the day, however, last i looked they were long sold out of current models. I don't recall their name however. Worst case you may try talking to them about it, though i would expect if they no longer carry them they would certainly be trying their best to steer you away from them. So be prepared for some biased reponses to your inquiries. This definitely isn't the best method to get an impression about Axioms but it might still be enough to give you a feel for what you could expect. They may still have one or two older models floating around too or know of someone that has Axioms that may let you have a listen.

Of course, you could also try ordering a couple and take advantage of the generous Axiom return policy. My gut feeling is once you get them home, you won't be giving those babies up.

Good luck!

Hey guys... thanks a lot for all of your replies!

BUT..... I ended up pulling the plug on Monday, and buying a set of Energy Reference Connoisseur RC-70s, with an RC-LCR centre and 3 RC-R surrounds. I've always really liked the sound of the RC, but the only place to get them in Regina is now Future Shop.

They were asking full MSRP of $2500 for them, so I had written them off. However, they were $700 off this week, and before I ordered a set of Axioms I decided to walk in there and make them an offer. Much to my surprise, they were willing to negotiate! I guess it's a relatively higher-end product being sold in a smaller market, in a store where people go to buy commodity items, so maybe they needed to get rid of some inventory... but at the end of the day, I got the RCs for what I consider to be a fair price, so I picked them up.

Energy talks about a 100hr break-in, and most of the reviews seem to echo that... they all mention that it's the most dramatic transformation they've ever seen in a speaker during break-in. All I can say is that the pair in the store, hooked up to an HK147 AVR sounded incredible, and mine already sound pretty incredible with my Yamaha 1200.

I notice they are particularly impressive with piano, strings, and voices. The sound stage and imaging is quite impressive, but I notice that the image is actually BEHIND the plane of the speakers, which I find interesting. It makes the room seem MUCH bigger. Does anyone have any comment on that? I find that even with two speakers, I end up with some of the most 3 dimensional sound I've ever heard.

Overall, I'm quite happy with my purchase. I probably would have been happy with Axiom, too, but really like the real wood veneer on the RCs and was getting something that I KNEW I like the sound of.

Thanks to all the wonderful people on this board! You guys really are a great community, and I hope that I can continue to be a participating member of this "family". A special thanks to Ajax for all his detailed emails helping me filter all the info.

cheers,

Ayan

Congratulations on the speakers, Ayan. Of course we'd love to have you stick around, though maybe not if you smile so much at once. It's creepy. \:\) And yes, Ajax is awesome. He's always very thoughtful in his posts, which is a nice contrast to... what I do.

Ayan, for me, it's less about what brand you buy, but more about getting enjoyment out of your speakers. That's great that you like the Energy RC-70s and got them for a good price. I used to have a pair of C2 bookshelves that were my first taste of hi fidelity.

I know what you mean about the deep soundstage. The spaciousness and three-dimensionality (is that a word?) are quite spectacular and really helps build an environment of music rather than a single plane of sound, or a plane that has a definitive source, i.e. the front baffle of the speaker. Well, I don't know if that made sense. . .

In any case, feel free to stick around.

Oh, and like Charles said, don't smile so much. It's creepy. ;\)

Congrats, those Energy's do sound nice, It has been awhile since I listened to a set but I do remember thinking they were very nice just over priced;\) but you found a way around that - well almost.

The most important part is that you found a set you like. I did notice that some one posted on the board today from Regina, maybe you could still hear some Axioms just to compare, thats the fun part about the hobby.

Yeah, speaker envy never ends.

That's right--I said speaker envy.

Ayan,

Congratulations. I bet they sound mellow. A cooler mid-range relative to the bass can result in the three-dimensionality that you are hearing. What happens to that effect when you turn the bass down and the treble up with your tone controls?

Terrific, Ayan! Glad you found something at an acceptable price that makes you happy. That's what it's all about. \:\)

By all means stick around and contribute to the degree with which you're comfortable. Happy to have you here. If you ever have any questions or need any help, don't hesitate to ask.

Tex, this sparked a memory of an old review I wrote up but never posted, where I tried to describe this effect. I think with some speakers, there is a definite point of origin where the sound comes from. It's like stretching a sheet between the speakers and all sound starts and exists from that point forward. I don't know if this can be best described as a flat soundstage, which I don't think is entirely accurate, but more of an "in your face" sound. This is not necessarily an aggressive sound, but a sound field that only moves forward--meaning there is no area behind the speakers filled with sound.

Now, there are speakers that are described as being able to disappear in the room. I had some bookshelf speakers that did this and it really enhanced the spaciousness of the presentation. Looking at my notes, I think I was trying to tie this phenomenon in with a laid back sound signature. I'm not convinced this is the sole reason for it, but I think it certainly is a factor along with crossover design, cabinet shape and size. . .

Well, now I'm stuck again. This is where my written notes bogged down because I could not reason out why the two speakers I was comparing sounded so tonally similar yet had different presentations.

Congrats on the new Speakers. I am also from regina and also would like to demo an M80, VP150, QS8 system. I think I might pull the trigger on them and try the in home demo when the time comes but still cant hurt to hear them before I do.
