I know there's a bunch of you using this AVR. Sorry if this is a dumb question, but...

Can you make the 3808 effectively wireless with the addition of a USB wireless device (or one that plugs into the ethernet port)? I know the 4804 is listed as a Wifi enabled. Am trying to figure out if I can do the same with the 3808.

Thanks!
Rich

I don't think so as those dongles usually need drivers to get them to work. You should be able to use a wireless access point and plug the 3808 into that.

You can not use a wirless usb device but you can use a wirless ethernet bridge.

I have mine set up for intenet radio and streaming flac files from my computer all over my wirless network.

I use this device:
http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WGA54G-Wireless-G-Gaming-Adapter/dp/B00009X6DT

It is a solid connection- even have used it for firmware upgrades.

The only downside to this gaming adapter is it does not support WPA securty so I am using WEP which is less secure.

I have not done it yet but I can go into my linksys router and set it up so that only devices with a certain MAC address can connect. I could enter the MAC address of my denon and my xbox 360 (those are the only 2 things I use over my WiFi) and that would probably make things even more secure.

You could probably use this too:
http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-WAP54G-Wireless-G-Access-Point/dp/B00007KDVJ

I tried to set up with that one first but ran into some problems. I am sure it would work I just was not setting up something right... and at the time I found the gaming adapter for $70 while the other one was $90+

Well, I pulled the trigger. I'm replacing my SR8002 with a 3808. I had to buy two (one for my brother-in-law) and one for moi. I figured it would be easier for me to support them if I had the same unit. That and the lure of being able to do my own FW upgrades was very appealing to me. Finally, MultEQ XT on the Denon has four times the filter resolution when compared to the 8002. That and the ability to do Pro Calibration finally tipped it towards Denon.

See, but your story is supposed to end with "and so now I've got a 2nd one I don't need. Rich, you seem like a really good guy, so I'll sell it to you for only $500. Will that work for you?"

At which point I'd say that you're too kind, but could we make it $500 with shipping included? \:\)

Have fun!

Wow, I thought bitter was just your favorite beer category to judge! Now I know it's an entire lifestyle! ;\)

I'd run effing copper if I knew how to run some effing copper. Whatever happened to that old HPNA std? It actually worked, and this could have been a nice application!

Terzaghi--

You totally rock! Those look like great options. One of the reviews of the one you got was pretty ticked off, but overall they both look like decent solutions. It's certainly cheaper than buying the 4808 to get wireless!

Thanks to everyone for the assistance. I love this board!

I'm happy with the one I use. If I would have known it did not support WPA I possibly would have considered buying something different.

setup was a ltitle tricky but now that its up and running I have no problems.

I think there are many options to choose from so just shop around.

It would be nice to have WPA security but I have read that WPA is crackable too. supposedly it takes MUCH longer to crack, but you can gather all the info you need to crack it in seconds. (then take the info back home and crack it.)

WEP can be cracked supposedly in a few minutes if you know what you are doing. I think I am ok though.. if any of the neighbor kids see my wifi network they will see it is password protected and that is probably security enough.

Some day I'll buy a new ethernet bridge... but probably not until I move.

I am a firm believer that the only way to secure your network is to hard wire everything... when I think of wifi I think of countless ethernet cables running out of my house waiting for people to plug into... but it sure is conveinent! ;\)

Actually just about any of the wireless security features are crackable in a few hours if done right with the right computers. What's even worse is there are sights out there explaining how to do it and what equipment/programs are needed and apparently even if you diable the SSID broadcast of your networks name, it can still be found.

Hard wire is the only safe way to go.

Rich, now you need to make the move to Network Attached Storage(if you haven't already) for all your media needs. Linksys makes the NAS200 which I use and Dlink makes one that works a little faster and has a printer port for network printing from anywhere, the D323.
