Been away quite a while. Many changes in life.
One of which is a new house (well not new as I had it before, but I used it as a rental). Hoping to update my speakers in the near future and mount the TV.

I have really tried to consider all options, but as wall space is limited, it looks like the TV is going above the fireplace.
Hope to take some pics this weekend of the room it is going in and get your thoughts on my idea on TV and speaker placement.

Wow- You HAVE been gone for awhile! You forgot that we quote people and take things literally!

Remember if you post photos of the above, you'll be banned from this site.

Thanks for the pretty mental pictures Mark...

Looks like you have some in-wall/on-wall 22s and 150 coming. Should be nice.

We had out TV above the fireplace in our previous place. As long as we were sitting in reclinable furniture it worked out fine, but even 17 feet across the room, if you weren't reclined, your neck got sore. Just keep that in mind. I am sure that you have already figured that out.

Welcome back by the way.

Oh, and we DO want photos of the room with the TV *attached* to the wall. No *mounting* of electronics allowed here. I am sure that you can save those for some fetish site. crazy

Welcome back. Believe it or not, I was thinking about you last week. Wondered if you would ever surface here again.

I saw a mount on avs awhile back that would bring the display forward and down for viewing and back up for storage. It was meant for just your situation.

Thanks everyone. Let me see about getting some quick pics. The issue is the room, not many choices.

Excuse the mess. This is the room.

Width is 16' 10"
Needless to say, no where to mouth the 56" tv. In fact, the left corner we see the tv on is my preferref location for my guitar processer and FRFR wedge.

Here is the opposing wall.

About 1/3 to 1/2 of that wall will be going awway when we do a remodel.

As you can see, there is a pathway from the front door to the back.

Here is the back wall

As seating faces the other direction, not sure about placing it on this wall.

And the wall being considered

So as you see, difficult area to address.
My thoughts are remove the mirror above the fireplace. Run some 2x4s around the inner peremiter as well as horizontally across the wall studs.

Mount the tv to the horizontal 2x4s.
Use a mirror treatment I saw on a DIY show to disfigure mirror tiles (basically turns them to loking more like a dark abalone) and mount them inside the inner permetier. So everything is offset from the wall by 2" roughly (yeah 1.5")

I will slot the peremiter 2x4s to allow wiring to pass through, so all wiring is hidden.

Pass wiring through the white "mantel" pieces.
Mount the OW/IW 150 in the horizontal mantel.
Mount the OW/IW M22s on the vertical mantel pieces. Will probably mount the M22s upseide down (tweeter on bottom and in line with the center channel tweeter).

Build an AV rack that will be positioned left of the fireplace. All wiring exits through a low panel of the outer left side of the left vertical mantel piece. Will run a remote extension eye up to the TV. You only need to point the remote at the AV rack.

QS8s on the back wall. Will use the current sub which is located under the piano.

Distance from sofa to fireplace is 11' 6".
The center of the tv will be at roughly an elevation of 71.5"

The top of the mantel is at 57"

So, any thoughts on other alternatives?
I have spent time sitting in the chair sofa looking at the middle of the mirror (which is higher than where the middle of the tv would be). Doesn;t feel too bad.

Oh and you can tell I am into music, with the 2 guitars on the wall (yes that is a 30+ year old Gibson LP Std), the 2 guitar cases underneath (yes more guitars), the piano and the hammered dulcimer. I have more instruments in other rooms as well.

So any thoughts?
Last call, looking to order in the next day or so before the price increase.

Almost have myself talked into 7.1 I got the side wall with the guitars that would be fine for a QS8.

Yes, the opposing side wall will partially come down in the future, but thats after saving 50K for the addition. A QS8 would go good there for now.

When it happens (that section of wall coming down), I will just suspsend it from the ceiling.
The wife won;t like that, but she will be happy with the addition, so maybe she will not notice smile

And I finally drilled into the side of one of those columns. (Down low where an outlet would be. I will be passing wires through this spot with a plate, so no harm no foul.)

Thicker than I thought at 3/4 inch. Was able to run a coat hanger up past where the horizontal piece is. Thats good. I am presuming I will probably find another 3/4+ of wood between the inside of the vertical piece and the horizontal piece. Right now I am not too concerned with that as I think the opening I will need to make for the center channel speaker will allow me enough room to get a drill in there to address it as needed.

I have been here for almost 5 years. I have had 2 false starts to getting new speakers.

I am NOT being held back this time. LOL smile

Mark, one thought is that if you're going to be sitting about 11' away, more spacing(say 10')between the mains would be desirable than the mounting on the vertical mantel columns would permit. Of course, if that's about the only practical option, it'll have to do.

Yes, since you're sitting almost up against the back wall, the QS8s should be mounted on the back wall, about 3' above ear level and separated as widely as possible, since they're side surround speakers.

When I demoed the M22 M60 and M80 at Axiom I found the M22 + sub sounded almost the same as the M60. The only way I could tell which was on was when there was enough low frequency stuff (like in movies) for the sub to distinguish itself. On most music, the two systems sounded damned near identical.

Here's a Q. For rear surrounds, what I have planned is left surround at 132* (recommendation is 135-150*). I can not increase this angle.
The right, to keep some symmetry on the back wall, is planned at 146*

Thoughts on that?

Also as far as height, I am planning on the sides to be the same elevation as the rears. Planning on QS8s for those positions, and not sure how much clearance is desired to the ceiling.

Currently I have the bottoms of the sides and rears at 95 1/2 " (just shy of 8 ft). that places them roughly 49 1/2" above listening level.

On the sides that allows the tops of the speakers to clear the
the ceiling by 27 1/2 ".

I can not lower the sides, I can raise them though if desireable.

Keeping the sides and rears bottoms level, the rear tops of the speakers have clearance to the ceiling of roughly 41 1/2".

Thoughts?

Other Facts: The sides are at 90*. I could if needed increase this slightly.

The front mains are at 14* each. I can not change that. I know 22-30* is desired.

You know the average sheet of paper is quite close to the height.width of a QS8? Yes I have paper taped to the walls in possible locations.

As long as the placement of the back surrounds is wide enough so that all listeners can hear both a left back and right back effect, the result should be satisfactory.

About 4' above ear level is within the recommended range for surrounds, but shouldn't be raised farther.

With back surrounds being used, the side surrounds should be directly to the sides of the listening position, since positioning them farther back isn't needed to help with a rear surround effect.

So Brent was kind enough to see I had a question here and reached out to me in email. Unfortunately my schedule is not allowing me to call right now.

I typed up the questions in email. % points I am looking for guidance on. 4 are pretty much givens. Just need to know if its acceptable.
The 5 is a 4 option choice.

Here it is:

Want to bounce some things off someone there as well as get a recommendation on front L R height placement.

Looking at I/O 22, I/O 150 and QS8s

Putting in Front L C F
Putting in LS and RS
Putting in LR and RR

Room is roughly 22’ wide by 16’2” deep. Ceiling goes from 8’ to 12 ‘ front to back.
Listening area is 11’ back from the front wall.

Starting with the side surrounds:
The bottoms of them are at 95 ½” from the floor
The listening height is 46”
The right is at 93* to listening point, left is at 91* to listening point.
I cannot decrease the height of these unless I position them forward of the listening point.
The speakers at this height have roughly 27” above them, so they are not hugging the ceiling.
Does this all sound acceptable for the sides?

Now to rears:
The bottoms of them are at 95 ½” from the floor
The listening height is 46”
The speakers at this height have roughly 41” above them, so they are not hugging the ceiling.

For the RR, the right (outside) edge is 52 ¾” from the side wall, resulting in 133* to the listening point.

For the LR, the left (outside) edge is 58” from the virtual side wall, resulting in 144* to the listening point.
Does this sound acceptable?

Now for the front.
The center line of the center speaker is 52 ½” from the floor.
Listening height is still 46”
Center of the display (a 52”) is at 71 1’2” from the floor.
These I really cannot change.
Does this sound acceptable?

The question here lies in the L and R.
I cannot change their horizontal location. The vertical centerline of both will each be 21 ½” from the centerline of the viewing center.
This results in 14* for each one.
Does this sound acceptable?

The question is about their height.

Choices:
1. Position in a normal manner so that the L & R tweeters are in a horizontal line with the centers tweeters. (This positions the L & R lowest in relation to the display)

2. Position in a normal manner so that the L & R centerlines are in a horizontal line with the centers tweeters. (This positions the L & R closer in relation to the display)

3. Position in a normal manner so that the L & R bottoms are in horizontal line with the bottom of the center. (This positions the L & R closet in relation to the display but offsets the tweeters the most)

4. Position in an inverted manner (tweeter on bottom) so that the L & R bottoms are in horizontal line with the bottom of the center. (This positions the L & R closet in relation to the display AND the tweeters are horizontally aligned)

What would be your choice and why?

So 5 points that I am curious about.

Order is placed. Glad I delayed as I was able to take advantage of the 20% on In/On Walls.

What was ordered:
2 I/O wall 22s in white with white grills
1 I/O wall 150 in white with white grill
4 QS8s in paintable finish with warm tan grills (the grills may be a close enoungh match that I do not have to paint them)

All said 10 days to ship. Thats fine. I have a lot of work to do before we get to mounting them

Once mounted I will post pics. The WAF should be quite high on this one.
