I was a bit disapointed by the anouncement.
I was glad to see the PS4 might be reverse compatible.
I just found a nice place to pick up old games and would really like to collect some old favorites.
I do like the potential for andriod and tablet control, even if it is only as a remote for the Bluray player.
If the bluray offers to be on par with current hi end players the cost won't be a detterent.
Not owning a PS3 makes me want one regardless.

It's not going to be backward compatible with PS3 games on disc, so I wouldn't stock up yet. If it does let you play PS3 games it will be via the streaming service. Perhaps there will be a way to unlock the ability to play a game by placing its disc in the drive, but save your pennies for now.

I looked at the Killzone screen shots on Flickr, they're original resolution was 3840x2160, so there's a good chance the PS4 does 4k output.

I'm also betting the price will be under $300 at launch. It's not that powerful of a machine, and with today's gaming market no one is going to pay $600 for a home console.

I will likely buy one, but the lack of power is making me think about building a gaming PC. I've not seriously gamed on a PC since 1996 (basically when I started working on PCs for a living, and tuning/troubleshooting a machine to just play a game felt too much like work). Though, the Steam Box thingy looks interesting, I might go that way.

One thing we should all recall is that back when the PS3 was being introduced, a good amount of the hype turned out to be vaporware. Then stuff that did come true started being phased out.

Don't get me wrong. I am a fan of the PS3 but here are just two of many examples of the actual Sony released hype being misleading.

- Backwards compatibility. Well, that didn't last very long did it?

- Those super smooth high def games they used as "this is actual Game play folks!" demos before it hit the stores, were not even real!!! The Killzone demo or whatever it was, was a fake and it never got released in any form for years and when it did, it certainly didn't look like the demos.

Anyways, I'm not saying it won't be great again. I'm just saying that now is the time for caution in our expectations.

With great power comes Awesome irresponsibility.

I think they did a pretty good job to manage expectations this time. First, there were no real hard numbers given, other than 8, x86 cores, and 8 GB of unified GDDR5 RAM. They didn't even mention the CPUs are AMD (which they are), or the clock speed. The said the GPU, is in the CPU core (or combined APU as they call it), and does 2.3 TFLOPS (I think that was the number quickly quoted), so it's a mid-range AMD part too.

I followed some games journalists on Twitter as the show was going on. This year's Killzone demo was met with, "that'd be impressive if it was four years ago." So no unrealistic expectations there either. The only tech demo that looked pretty advanced was the one from Quantic Dream, but that's how all their stuff is, and they're expected to fail to deliver by this point. David Cage has a lot of vision, but not much to back it up.

Heck, they didn't even show the physical hardware or much of the UI. The whole thing was more of "hey, the PS4 is coming," than anything else.

The PS4 and Xbox 720 are going to be so similar from an architecture standpoint this time around, a big portion of my purchasing decision will weigh on the controller and whether the console will block the play of used games and require a mandatory internet connection.

The PS4 controller design is more of the same, but the mini touch screen is a neat addition However, Sony announced they WILL NOT block the play of used games. A major plus (precedent) for the future of console gaming this generation.

I remember when the PS3 came out and people said "nobody will buy a $600 console" and yet they were priced at $600. I know because 2 days after release, I was at a Best Buy for something else, and there they were. PS3s... For $600...

I didn't watch the announcement and haven't looked into it much since it is still early, but as others mentioned, if the PS3 pre-lauch hype and information is any indicator, then the PS4 won't be that "OMG awesome." It will still sell like nuts just because the world is in this mode of "I must have the latest XYZ product or I am a loser" (Apple is great at tapping into this mentality and making killer profits doing so. Why not Sony or Microsoft, right?)

We have a Wii and Xbox360 at home that see little play time. I spend almost 100% of my gmaing hours on my PC.

The PS3 at launch was pretty much equal to high-end PCs. The PS4 right now, it only equal to mid-range PCs, and by the end of the year it'll be below mid-range. The new Xbox is in the same league. With the Wii U being only a bit faster than the current PS3/Xbox 360, it's obvious the target for consoles has shifted. They no longer are trying to shoot for the stars, they just want to build something that's easy to program, and easy to hook up to a TV.

You're right about one thing, these days if someone has $600 to spare they'll buy an iPad.

An official announcement has been made about 4k.

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/02/21/ps4-will-output-video-in-4k-but-not-games/

That's what I wanted anyway, hopefully it'll be able to play UHD BDs, if that spec makes it through.

I'll probably get a RedRay for most of my 4k movie viewing anyway.

Sony's BD player BDPS790 upscales to 4k, so maybe they will just carry over that feature to the PS4. It's too bad if the video from games can't also be upscaled.
