How far from the wall should I place the speakers from the wall to get good bass ans imaging and depth?

This is a very room dependent question. The effect of placing speakers near the wall or corner is to increase output below about 300 Hz. This effect can be desirable in many rooms and especially with bookshelf speakers. It all depends on what is happening in your room at your listening position. I would suggest trying some different placement options in your room and going with what sounds best.
