I believe the digital out and coaxial out on preamps (really just receivers) are just used to split the signal to other systems (like recording devices) if necessary. The digital out isn't a processed signal at all in most cases. On my MP3 player I have an optical in for recording purposes.

So, if you had a digital in on an amp...and all the receiver was doing was passing the digital signal from the source to the amp, there wouldn't be a lot of point in even having a receiver.

Also, a "digital" signal can be DTS, Dolby Digital, PCM 2-channel audio, or another digital format, so the amp would have to start doing the receiver's job.

Didn't mean to stomp on your parade...your other ideas would be nice for receivers.
