I think sometimes people get too hung up on slotting music in genres.
I have always been a big AC/DC fan; I bought new releases of theirs in Jr. High and HS before Bon died. I thought Scorpions and Def Leppard were the shiznit when I was in college ~25 years ago. I generally like Pearl Jam and Nickelback. But I just don't enjoy speed metal and a lot of traditional metal (Metallica, etc.).
A couple of harder-edged bands I have enjoyed a lot lately are Red Jumpsuit Apparatus and Autopilot Off. But I don't know if they're metal, punk, emo, screamo or adult alternative.
