I heard about this on ESPN radio yesterday. I'll hedge my comments by saying that I, too, am annoyed by the OCD rituals that batters seems to do, and I don't watch much live baseball for this reason.
However, my respect for Mariano Rivera went up when he shot back at West that maybe if West didn't want to be at the ball park so long that (1) maybe he should find another job and (2) maybe he should call a strike zone that's bigger than a loaf of bread.
Granted, getting the ump angry may come back to bite him later, but I enjoy playing Devil's advocate (looks over shoulder for Adrian, who is undoubtedly prepping a pun about the Al Pacino movie), and West never looks like he's happy to be working a game. YMMV.
