I think it's as much that anything new is flashed on the internet instantly and so you can reach a mega market any day of the week. Before, you would save up your great idea and use shows like CES to get market flash.

if you tried to hold of now, you would loose out as either someone else would release what you had thought up and scoop you out of sales, or something better would come along in the mean time and you loose your punch.

Take a look at the selfie case that showed at CES where the Chinese clone market is selling the idea before the inventor has even started selling the original.
