They are talking about buffering (but may not know it). As wifi or ethernet for that matter is pretty blocky and can easily send packets out of order, you would want to have most if not all of a music file in memory as fast as possible so that you are playing from a local buffer rather than relying in the network stream to give you the next block of sound in the right order and on time.

So once you start playing the song it will try and get the whole song locally as quickly as possible. Once it's local and playing it doesn't need the source until the next song that is cued up needs to be downloaded into buffer.
