I currently am within the 30 day trial period. I have 2 m50
fronts, vp150 center, 2 qs8's for sr/sl and 2 qs8's for SB's. I started with the M22's for fronts but they had a poping sound fromt the woofer during bassy scense even crossed over at 80hz. I sent them back and got the m50's. I have had them for about a week. Would I notice a significant diffrence with the m60's? Would they better match the vp150? Thanks.

ahhhhh upgradeitis stikes the newbie

Welcome by the way....I wish I could help on this one, I've never heard the M50's but I know there is many on here we call the M50 posse that love them. I believe there is some differences slightly in sound. I don't like to use words, but I've heard some say the 50's are a little more laid back, and the 60's are a little more bright or forward.

Good Luck and hope someong else chimes in for ya

I can give you my 2 cents worth since I have gone from M22-M50-M60. Yep, tried them all.. I had the 22s for about 2 years and loved them. No complaints at all. In fact, sometimes I think about getting another set because of their tight, crisp sound. I decided I wanted a little fuller sound though and bass from the mains so I went to the 50s. Loved them but I did notice a difference in them and the 22s. The 50s were more laid back-to me that meant not as crisp or sharp as the 22s. Not that that was bad, just different. So I kept reading about the 60s and their mid range and bass and decided to try them. I love them and they give me the fullness, the bass when I turn off my sub, the better and sharper mid range and the crispness that I like. All of the Axioms are great. The 60s produce a little bit sharper and crisper detailed sound than the 50s but I don't think you can say that they're better, they are just a little different. However, saying all that, I am glad that I went to the 60s.

I have M50s and am very satisfied with them; however.....I use my M50s with M3s for center and surrounds.

If I had a bunch of money invested in VP150s and QS8s; I'd go with M60s for a better match.

I have had the M50's and the M80's. What others have posted is true. The M50's are a little more laid back then the M80's.

Truth be told the M50's are my favorite speaker in the Axiom line.

I know you asked about the M60's but from what others have said, the M80's and the M60's are close to the same sound but the M80 goes a little louder.

I auditioned the M50s up against a pair of M22s. At first, I thought they sounded even. After a week or so, the booksheves surpassed the towers, so I had no choice but to return the M50s. While the 50s had a very pleasant bass presence, I found that they were weaker in the mids so in my opinion the 22s were a clear winner. I haven't heard the 60s, but others who have had both state that they are similar.

On second thought; those other cars are cool too....just no photos!!

>>Would I notice a significant diffrence with the m60's? Would they better match the vp150?

I guess the big question is whether you noticed a difference in the midrange when going from the M22s to the M50s (eg. vocals and instruments sounded a tiny bit less sharp) and if so which sound you preferred. M50s sort of sound like big M3s, M60s sort of sound like big M22s. Strictly speaking the M60s are a bit more "flat" than the 50s but if your room is fairly "live" (bare walls or floors etc) then the 50s might be a better match for your room.

There is obviously a big difference in bass between M50 and M22 so it's sometimes hard to hear the difference in the upper midrange. If you feel that the M50s are missing anything compared to the M22s (and you liked the 22s better in that regard) then the 60s will be more like the M22s. If you didn't notice a difference in the midrange, or preferred the 50s over the 22s in terms of midrange sound, then I would stay with the 50s. The difference is supposed to be fairly small anyways.

Hands up everyone who is NOT old enough to remember quadraphonic systems

Quadraphonic.....ahhh yea, cool stuff back in the day! One of the first quadraphonic albums I remember listening to was this album, track #9 was especially cool to hear!

Ummmmm, I *barely* remember though...I was sooo very young.

The m22's had a defect so I dont think I really got a good idea of what they would sound like without being tainted. To tell the truth the M50's sound pretty darn good to me. I just kept reading all these posts about how much better the midrange was with the M60's.

As a matter of fact, the highs with the vp150 are almost too bright with my new Yahmaha. With my older Oknyo, they did not sound so............"painful". I am PEQing to the fronts (m50's) and using the THX cinema modes to make it tolerable. I dont know if going to the m60's would ruin the hole set by making everything too bright.

I think I am going to stay the way I am for now..............well, I might order another vp150 since its slightly off center now that I have mounted to above the screen. I am dying to spend money I guess.

The set-up I am currently running is M50s for mains and an M3(vertical/inverted) for center, and am very happy with it.

If a person prefered the sound of the M50s, that would be one way to go. The M3 is a perfect match for the sound of the M50 and has no problem acting as center in my 16x27 room. And the "B" word never gets said!

The only downside is that M3 is so much less expensive than the VP150 that you would miss out on all the fun of spending all that extra money

as the founder of the M50ti crew i feel compelled to weigh in here. i run a vp150 and qs8's along with my m50's and i think they match very well. transitions from the front sound stage to the rear, and vice versa, are handled very well for both DVD-A and dolby/dts 5.1, no complaints here. i have not heard the m60 or 22 so i cant comment on the differances. i have compared the m50's to the paridigm monitor 11's which cost about 500$ more. the paridigms play a little lower but other than that the m50's match the performance of a speaker that's almost twice the price.

I would not exactly call it upgradeitis. I was demoing diffrent brands of speakers in my dedicated theater to replace my old ones. I ended up really really liking the qs8's and maybe even the m50's. I have not found fault with them yet. The vp150 maybe another story though. I can hear a slight resonance on some voices and it can be almost painfully bright. I can eq that out if it though. Something tells me the problems may be tamed by two of them side by side. It's now hanging just above my 133" screen slightly off center. I think thats why the sound seems off.

Ooops....Me bad

Didn't mean to exclude you as an M50 owner

There are just so few of us.....and at my age I tend to lose count when I run out of fingers on my left hand(I use my right forefinger for counting)

Hope you continue to find your M50s acceptable!

Maybe placing the VP150 on the floor (on a stand) would help. Or using a 3rd M50 as a center?

How loud have you played your M50's. I was really pushing them hard the other day, probobly louder than i ever played them before with 2ch music, and the loder i went the better they sounded. I gotta say my ADCOM amp has power for days. alot of bass too, i thought the sub was on a couple of times but it wasn't. i'm thinking about throwing a party as an excuse to blast my M50's, Heineken any one?

>>The vp150 maybe another story though. I can hear a slight resonance on some voices and it can be almost painfully bright.

A few people who reported that kind of sound from a VP150 found that the problem was largely eliminated by making sure that the sound was not being affected by the edge of the shelf/tv/whatever it is sitting on.

The best seems to be a shelf or stand that gets it a bit away from the TV and gives it a sharp-edged shelf (rather than the curved edge of many TVs) so you can cantilever the front of the VP150 out over the edge of the shelf a bit without worrying about it falling.

EDIT -- if you haven't read through this article from Alan, give it a quick scan :

Hmmmmm.....let's see; how loud have I played my M50s?

I've only got 85wpc to play with, but the Wife insisted we play one of her favorites a few weeks back(Pirates of the Caribbean CD)at(near)concert levels.....the Grandkids called for mercy and ran outside!!

They sounded BIG, they sounded GOOD!! I(We)were impressed

The sub was left on, but I don't believe it added much!! We played it in 2ch, and yeah,....they sounded "better" the louder they got!!

It was FUN

Yeah, bigwill; a third M50 as center would be MY personal favorite.

Unfortunately the picture on my TV is too low to stand one up in front below the set.

Any idea just how much a negative WAF there is to even considering installing even an inverted M50 on top of the set?

She said it would look like a smokestack up there!!

Even worse than one of those hot water tank SVSs, She says

If nothing exciting happens on the 25th aniversary, I may well buy and butcher a new M50 and........

Shhhhhhh......I'm serious here; a full-range complete match for my M50s mains sounds like a complete hoot

As far as center channel placement goes, I had mine on top of my tv and it sounded very "boxy". I moved it out over the edge of the TV some and that helped. What really made the difference was putting it on a 12" stand on the floor and angling it up. Now you can't tell where the sound is coming from.
