I'm looking at either the M60ti or the Mordaunt 980's (http://www.mordauntshort.co.uk/products/908.html).

Either way, I want to eliminate the need for a sub. My current sub is not very musical at all. I listen to mostly music, but movies as well. I'd say 60/40. I'd rather put my money into a full-range speaker that will handle it all. That said, do you think that the M60ti on its own is enough to handle the LFE in 5.1 movies?

Any advice on this matter would be appreciated.

Also, I should mention my tastes. I listen to a lot of acoustic rock (Beck, Wilco, etc.), straightforward Brit-type rock (Blur, Radiohead, Beatles, The Kinks), some "indie" music (Interpol, The Walkmen, Microphones), and some classical to boot. My tastes are varied, but I wouldn't say that all the recordings I will be listening to will be top notch. A lot are raw and vintage sounding. I've heard this can be bad with the Axioms?

Finally, my setup is an H/K Signature Series 2.0 preamp, Parasound HCA-855 amp, and Pioneer Elite DV-45a DVD/transport.

Thanks!

fadein,
Is there a reason you want to eliminate the use of a sub?
If you plan on going that route with Axioms, i would suggest you look more closely at the M80s rather than the M60s. I love the M60s for music but for good, solid HT booms and thundering slams, you still need a subwoofer. The M80s will produce more lower end than the M60s though.

I think this really depends on what you're expecting in terms of LFE. When I moved and upgraded my HT, I had my M60s running without a sub for a few days, waiting for my SVS to arrive. Compared to the 80W Yamaha sub I had prior to my upgrade, the M60s did a rather respectable job for LFE. But the SVS or a similar high-quality sub is in a whole other league. The difference in bass between the M60s alone and the M60s + SVS (I have a 20-39PC+) is tremendous.

If you don't need room-shaking bass, the M60s without a sub(or M80s, as others have mentioned) are probably not a bad compromise. But make no mistake about it, it IS a compromise.

Endaar

I've had my m60s for a few weeks and when I can't be listening to them because I'm here at work, I'm wishing I could be home listening to them. They replaced some 12" DCMs that made big, roomy bass but weak highs and no middle. I ran the m60s without a sub for two weeks and while it took time to get used to the decreased bass (and the m60s aren't as loud as my DCMs) the quality of the sound coming out is awesome. I can't stand listening to crappy old recordings on them though - too revealing. The flip side, of course, is that new recordings sound AWESOME. They have changed what music I want to listen to - more jazz, more vocals, less blues, less distortion filled hard rock.

Dave Matthews' concert DVD sounds unbelievable. That Jar-Jar Binks looking guy with the electric violin sounds like he's playing a totally different instrument. My wife looked over at me and was almost tearing up.

Might want to get a little sub though, at least.
