Hey there. I'm wanting to make cabinets to house my A/V gear and I want the finish to match Axioms finish, but I don't yet have any Axioms to compare colors. I'm wondering if there are any woodworkers out there that know of any brand and color of stain applied to cherry hardwood that would match Axiom's Boston Cherry vinyl. Thanks for any help.

If I recall someone had success matching Boston Cherry with a MinWax product. Problem is I don't recall what code it was.

MINWAX

I can tell you that it's not Early American! Vintage burgundy, antique red, mahogany, or red mahogany might be good choices. Axiom will send you a little sample if you call them.

You really need a sample to do a colour match, and it's very possible that an "off the shelf" stain might not match either. Experiment with spare wood and various stain combinations.

TRUE....I spent more on trying to stain match a project a few years back than I like to think about.....Even took a piece of my wood to a "pro" to see if his shop could make a match. He got closer than I did, but.....turns out my wood had more native yellow in it, that made it near imposible to match without changing wood species.

It was fun though

Thanks all. I did hear back from Axiom and they are sending me a sample of the vinyl. Then I can begin the tedious job of matching the color. Maybe I can get lucky and find something off the shelf. At any rate I never stop appreciating the service that Axiom provides. Awesome company!

Oh yeah, kcarlile you're definitely right about it not being Early American. If I remember right EA is a brown colored finish and the Boston Cherry is a red colored finish, so your recs are in the right ballpark. After I get the sample and do some experimenting I can let the forum know what I found if it would be helpful.

Hello powerwindow,
I can't comment on cherry but several months back I built a custom cab for the HSU VTF-2, that my wife uses in her stereo set-up with the Boston cherry M3's. I used oak and a two part stain process using Minwax.
Step 1 apply red mahoghany stain per directions
after about 4 hours dry time
step 2 apply red oak stain per directions.
This produced a pretty good match, but not dead-on.

Check out my DIY link, it's the HSU redux pix.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, that was more of a side note for me. I did my entertainment center in Early American, and then brought it home, put the samples from Axiom on it, and looked at it at night in room light. Decided Vermont Maple looked the best. Needless to say, it didn't. Nice finish, bad match.

Thanks. Nice pics by the way. I'll wait for the sample and then see what different combos look like on cherry.
