ok. i have a20 year old Sansui 140watt per channel B-3000 amplifier. i was thinking of using this to power my M60Ti's instead of my Pioneer 1015tx..just to see if it gives it more volume and more power...however, i was concerned that it might change or worsen the audio from my speakers. does an amp pretty much only reproduce what it is fed? or does the amp itself have anything to do with the audio that results? TIA...again..sorry for so many questions

Try it and let us know how it sounds. You can use the preouts from your Pioneer to the Sansui.

Michael, that would depend on what the original specs of the B-3000 were and whether it was still in good enough condition to deliver those specs. If it can in fact deliver 140 clean watts then it should be audibly identical at precisely equal levels to your 1015, which has similar power capability. The ideal for an amp is to be "A straight wire with gain", i.e. something that doesn't change the signal in any way except to make it stronger. That ideal can't be entirely achieved, but audio technology has reached the point where even relatively inexpensive units(e.g. your 1015)produce transparent amplification within their design limits, with audibly flat frequency response and inaudibly low noise and distortion. That degree of perfection is all that's necessary and spending more can't bring audible improvement.

If you already have the amp and you know it's in good working condition then give it a try.

What is wrong with your Pioneer, it should be more than adequate, especially to power the m60's. You don't need an amp.

Why are most people here so opposed to separates? I've read where Alan Lofft says,

"in many cases, the actual power output of an A/V receiver is measured with only one or two channels driven to maximum output while the other five channels coast along at one eighth of the rated output".

He also says,

"Specifications (distortion, noise, etc.) of preamp-processors and power amps are usually a bit superior to an A/V receiver, since there is better internal physical separation of wiring pathways (more room), hence less chance of interference (and resulting noise) from nearby hum-causing component parts. And having separates also means that you can upgrade to a larger or different power amplifier while keeping your preamp-processor."

These look like good reasons to purchase separates to me. I can also see if space is an issue why a receiver would be a better option. It seems most people here want the least expensive component they can get their hands on. I've heard the "all amps and receivers sound the same" line many times. If thats true, then amps and receivers may be the only products I can think of that are massed produced (less expensive) and are equivilent to products made by companies who specialize in one type (audio components, more expensive) of product. For example, Budweiser is inferior to Sierra Nevada or Anchor. Yugo is inferior to BMW or Mercedes. Is a Radio Shack receiver really as good as a Rotel or Naim? Are speakers out of a White Van as good as Axiom's (I know the answer to this question)? I'm not trying to start an argument, I just don't understand how in many instances the more money spent on a product the better the product.

Not all of us are but I agree with your statement. In my years on this board the majority feel that a receiver will do just fine. In most cases it will but for those of us that have dabbled with separates...........every now and again, that theory is proven wrong!

But what do I know, I'm one of those people that laughs when I hear all electronics sound the same. The more stuff I try, the more that statement is proven wrong time and time again.

I have gone all-separates for both of my Home Theater systems.

Office 5.2 System:
I replaced a Sony STRDB 1070 receiver (rated at 6x100 watts but which really put out more like 30 wpc, but a very nice receiver nonetheless) with a Sony TA E9000ES processor and an Anthem PVA 5 amplifier. Sound quality has improved enormously.

Main HT 7.2 system:
I replaced an Onkyo 797 receiver with an Integra DTC 9.4 processor, 3 (2 channel) Yamaha M-80 amps and a 2 channel Onkyo M-504. I'm just now setting this system up after moving in April to the new house (been busy), but I expect this system to sound terrific.

Speakers for the office system: 2 Michaura M665 towers (very much like the Axiom M60s) - I'll be modifying the cross overs with upgraded capacitors and resistors soon), 2 Mission DS77 surround speakers, an Axiom made, highly modified Merak MC634 center channel (swapped the Merak 6.5" drivers for a pair of Axiom 6.5s, swapped the 3/4" titanium tweeter for a 1" from a Reference 3a de capo, used the de capo's cross over which also lets the 6.5s run free - had to operate on the box a bit, but this is the best sounding center channel I've ever heard - haven't heard the jm labs center or many other greats) Klipsch LF10 1600 watt sub and a Dahlquist PDQ1500 15" 500 watt sub, and, of course, some home tweaked piezo super tweeters flat to 40KHz - 3 of them)

Main HT:
Speakers - Thiel CS3.6 towers, tweaked Merak MC6H center with Axiom 6.5s), Axiom QS8s, and a pair of M2s which I think I'll swap out for a pair of modified Michaura M55s, SVS 20-39 sub and a Vance Dickerson Titanic 10" sub.

Last time around I had the QS8s on the side surround positions and the M2s on the back - I think I'll go with the 8's on the back wall and the M2/M55 at the side surround positions this time.

Anyway, separates, they made a big difference in my systems.

Separates are the way to go, at least for stereo - huge difference!! Once you go separates, you never go back!!!
Well, I know it does not rhyme... ;-), but anyway, you know what I mean.
