If you don't want a projector, stop reading...
If you are offended by someone just sharing a good price, stop reading...
If you just like to complain about off topic posts, stop reading...
If you are looking for a cheap way to get into a front projector (al beit an older model), you can pick up a brand new, still with 3 year warantee, Sanyo PLV-Z1 (not Z2, not Z3, not the new Z4) for $499. I love my Z2, and SirQuack loves his Z2. I would put this at probably a 2002 original release based off of when the lastest projectors in this line came out. So, you bet, this isn't the cream of the crop, or top of the line anything, but it does do widescreen HDTV which most manufacturers can't touch for under $1000, let alone $499 for a BRAND NEW projector.
Anyway, do what you wish with this info. Buy one, don't buy one, I don't care. Just saw this deal this morning and thought that I would share.

Please no flames. If people don't want this stuff shared here, I completely respect that. I just know that there are people looking for a projector system, and I am trying to point out a low cost possibility.
If you are anyway offended by this, or think that this type of post will bring down, tear apart, or devistate the great Axiom web site and the forums we all love, I appologize in advance. I don't plan to do this very often, so don't think that this will be a regular event. I would guess that at the MOST this type of post would occur a couple times a year, and I guess I used up my 2 today.

Nick, how does the Sanyo compare to the Optima H-31(?) and InFocus 4805(?) ... I'm thinking the models numbers are correct on the two mentioned.

Check out the specs on Projector Central.
I have copied and pasted the 3 sets of specs for the 3 projectors here, and then my post "failed" and when I went Back in Internet Explorer, it was gone (after I tried to refresh), so I am not going to repost all of it here.
Here are some tid bits of what I had.
First off, price.
Sanyo Z1 - $499
Optoma H31 - $999 according to Froogle.com
InFocus 4805 - $726 for refurb, $999 for new (Froggle.com)
I skipiped the prices from the "garbage" sellers in New York (If you want to know who, shoot me a PM, but their merchant ratings say it all).
Display Technology:
Z1 - 0.7" PolySi LCD (3)
H31 - 0.5' DLP, 6 color wheel segs, 4x wheel
4805 - 0.6" DLP, 6 color wheel segs, 4x wheel
Display Resolution:
Z1 - 964x544, 16:9
H31 - 854x480, 16:9
4805 - 854x480, 16:9
Bright/Contrast
Z1 - 700 ANSI with 1000:1 contrast
H31 - 850 ANSI with 3000:1 contrast
4805 - 750 ANSI with 2000:1 contrast
Inputs:
Z1 - 15pin VGA, Component, Composite, S-Video
H31 - 15pin VGA, Component, Composite, S-Video, DVI-I (HDCP)
4805 - 15pin VGA, Component, Composite, S-Video, DVI-I (HDCP)
Warranty:
Z1 - 3 years
H31 - 2 years
4805 - 2 years
Hope that this helps...

Nothing wrong with this post at all Nickster, your not trying to sell anything, just giving others the opportunity for a good deal. I know many fellow AVS'rs that have racked up thousands of hours on their Z1, and are very satisfied. Because of the lower resolution, as long as a person does not try to have a monster screen like we do pixelation should not be a problem, everything has limits...
Heck of a good price...

I know nothing about projectors…….haven’t started studying them yet.
I do not have HDTV available where I live.
I am going to use a 106” screen.
Is there any real reason I should hold out and buy a newer model? $500 seams like a heck of a deal to me.

106" is a very good sized screen. You might want to check out that Projector Central like I put in the first post. They have a calculator that helps to decide how big of an image you can and should expect out of a projector. While the Z1 may do the 106" screen, you might have issues with brightness and so forth. It is a good place to start.

If your not to concerned about HD, then the Z1 is a great projector for the price, not to say the Z1 doesn't do a good job with HD material. It was one of the first projectors that came out with what is called 1/4 HD resolution.
Qoute from below review "The 960x540 resolution format has been designated "1/4 HD" both in other industry literature and on our site. This is truly unfortunate because though it is technically accurate it is highly misleading. The "1/4 HD" format was created because a native 1080i HDTV signal which is 1920x1080 can be scaled quite efficiently into a matrix that requires a compression of precisely 50% in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions. Notice that 960 is one-half of 1920, and 540 is one-half of 1080."
When you say 106" I assume your talking screen width, for projector's most people talk in terms of screen width. So, for a 106" wide 16:9 screen you would have 60" x 106" or a diagonal of 122". You could achieve this size with a throw distance (projector to screen) of between 12-14ft depending on how you have the zoom set.
If you were meaning the 106" was your diagonal measurement
then you would have 52" x 92" for your screen size. Your throw distance would then be from about 10.4 to 12.4 ft. Based on the calculator, a 122" diag. screen probably would be to big for this projector to get a great picture, as it does not have enough lumens for those throw distances. However, you would be fine with a 106" diag. screen or slightly smaller.
