Greg,

Oh, OK. If you have your DVD players coaxial digital output connected to the H/K coaxial digital input for DVD, you do not need to run any analog (Red and White) audio cables to the H/K to play CDs.

When you play a CD, the DVD player's digital link will route the CD's PCM (pulse-code modulation) digital audio to your H/K, and the H/K's DAC (digital to analog converter) will decode the CD signal. You should then be able to cycle through the various modes on the H/K or find "Surround Off" (or it might be labeled "Stereo") if you want to listen in standard 2-channel stereo.

You may have to go into the DVD player's internal menu and engage "PCM" or "stereo out" to play back the CDs. If your H/K automatically switches to Dolby Pro Logic because it senses a a 2-channel stereo signal (some receivers do this), then find the "Surround Off" control to get stereo only.

If you run analog (Red and White) audio cables from the DVD player, then the DVD player's internal DAC would be active and you'd have to select the CD input on the H/K when you play a CD. You may hear no difference. Normally, the DACs in the H/K receiver might be slightly superior to the DACs in the DVD player, so it's preferable to use the digital link to the H/K, but you may hear little or no difference between the analog CD input or the DVD digital output when playing a CD.
