Welcome Hammerhead,

This has been mentioned a lot on previous forums. Denon AVR's should have no problem driving the 4 ohm m80's, and I believe that covers most of the Denon lineup. M60's and M80's are very similar in sound. What is your room size?

The 986 should handle the 80s unless you listen at extremely loud levels. The 80s are very efficient.

HH, welcome. It's most likely that your Denon will be able to drive the M80s very well at its 8 ohm setting. At most, if you use a very high volume in a very large room the protective circuit in the receiver might shut it down. Don't assume a problem that might never develop.

I will be moving into a apt I dont know the size of the room yet. Im purchasing these for my home that I will be buying later. Im concerned about the Reciver getting to hot and may damage it. I think I could get the 60 and use the extra cash for upgrading the sub to the 350.

If the 60 sound just as good as the 80 why take the risk. What would I be losing by changing to the 60?

You should buy the 80s for the same future home reason. The Denon will drive the 80s. It will also make a great pre/pro should you decide to get amps later.

You can do this after you have heard the 80s for the 30 day trial.

I had 60's and upped to 80s in the 30 day period. The 60s and 80s are very similar. The 80s have a fuller sound because of more drivers. The 80s can play very loud with out distortion. The also sound very good at low levels. Axiom shipped the 80s and I was able to A/B both before returning the 60s (prepaid BTW). The 80s have more bass than the 60s.

I am not saying that the 60s are bad. They are excellent speakers. Had the 80s not been available, I would have been satisfied with the 60s.

All of this IMHO!
