I'm having a hard time finding an answer to this on the web, so here goes: What exactly is the preout voltage rating that I am reading on the specs sheet of various receivers?

For example, I'm considering either getting the Yamaha RX-V757 (which, from what I can tell, is one of the cheapest receivers that has preouts, at around $500) or the RX-V1600 at about twice the cost. The preout rating for the RX-757 is listed at 2V/1.2kilo-Ohm; the RX-V1600 at 1V/500-Ohms. The REC OUT for both is at 200mV/1.2kilo-Ohm. Another example, when looking at the Outlaw 1070, it's listed at just 1V, no impedance.

What does this mean? The ratio seems kinda the same to me. 2:1200 vs. 1:500. I realize that this spec isn't what causes the price differential, it's just the one that I'm curious about.

I'm planning on running either M60's or M22ti's on either of these receivers, eventually adding a stereo amp if I feel the need. Basically a slowly growing home theater with emphasis on music for now.

Thanks much

If you get M22's, the Yamaha RX-V557 has plenty of power to drive the M22's. I had music blasting (reaching about -5 on my receiver), SPL levels around 100 and no distortion whatsoever.

For M60's I would probably go with the RX-V657 or 757.

My guess is that you are seeing a variety of numbers because some are "peak", some are "reference", and one of them just seems plain wrong

My recollection was that line level RCAs were pretty much normalized to something like 0.775 volts. This happens to give 1 milliwatt into 600 ohms but these days everything is solid state so nobody cares so much about matching impedences -- it used to matter more with transformer outputs.

The Rec Out number seems funny, I don't understand that one. Bottom line is that pretty much any analog signal on an RCA jack is supposed to be compatible, with the obvious exception of the digital coax out from a player or SPDIF card.

Hey, thanks much for the link. Very informative site. When I have more time I'll have to look further into it. From what I can gather so far it looks like it's pretty much more important to look at/match the input sensitivity of the power amp, if I'm going to bother looking at anything at all. But again, I haven't had much time to poke around and there's a lot of good info on there. So thanks again.

Most of my confusion usually comes from the way a lot of spec-sheets just seem to throw out numbers without any real reference point.

Thanks,

Chris
