Hello I recently inquired to axiom about the M80Ti home theater package. I gave them my receiver specs and room size and the reply i got was that the M80Ti are to big.

I have a home theater set up in my finished basement 17x30 1 Yamaha HTR 5660 @320watts and 85watts per channel
1 Panasonic DVD S77 HDMI
1 HD cable box PVR
1 Panasonic Projector PT-AE700U
1 Garbage Bose speaker system! <-- gift i swear !

I was told that the 4 ohm load of the M80Ti is no good for my receiver and that the M60Ti with its 8 ohm load would work better.

Now before i purchase the M60Ti set I really need to know if M80Ti would work. I really wanted the M80Ti set because of there size and look. Also I have some friends with the M60Ti and they sound great! Ill settle for them but i really wanted to out due them with the M80Ti set.

KB, welcome. It shouldn't be stated categorically that the 5660(or any other receiver)won't be adequate for a setup with the M80s. This depends on how loud of an average listening level is used and how wide the dynamic range of the material being played is. Speaker manufacturers(and receiver manufacturers)don't like to be blamed when a particular speaker/receiver combination keeps shutting down and they may be overly cautious in some of their suggestions. There have been a fair number of reports of successful use of M80s with moderately powered Yamaha and other receivers not specifically recommended for 4 ohm operation. If you really want to try the M80s, consider doing so if you're willing to send them back if they're not satisfactory for your use.

JohnK has given you probably the best advice you can get on your question. Here is an article from Audioholics briefly touching on this subject. One thing to note is your receiver does have main outs, if need be you could always add an external amp that will handled the M80s with out problem.

On the Yamaha website it does claim that the HTR-5660 can handle a 4 ohm load, although it does state the fact it has a 4 ohm switch. As you note in the Audioholics article it is not recommended to use it.

You would not be settling for M60's...

My room is much bigger than yours and my 60's have no problems. Maybe some Yammy owners will chime in here that have tried or own the 80's. There was one person, can't remember his screen name, that his Yammy kept going into protective mode and shutting down. He called Yamaha and they said that particular model would drive 4ohm speakers, but for some reason it would keep shutting down.

Good Luck..

It's a tough call. With your current receiver, you probably would be happier with the M60s in the sense that you could probably get a higher clean sound level from the 60s than the 80s. Obviously the situation would be different if you bought a new receiver in the future which could handle the M80s (pretty much anything from HK, NAD, Denon plus most separate power amps).

If you think you are likely to upgrade the receiver in the future then going with 80s might make sense -- the downside would be that you would need to limit the volume to a level where the receiver didn't go into shutdown. You would still get some pretty decent sound levels IMO, but probably not as good as with M60s.

Wish I could give you more specific answers, hope this helps.

You might want to consider this any way. The in-home trial is the best way to get an accurate assessment of speakers.

I agree here as well but I would say that IMHO the 80s sound great a low volume as well. Depending on the source material, most of the time I listen at -17.5 to -22.4 on my Denon dial.

You can always put a fan on the Yammy to cool it off.

Thanks for the replys everyone . I will probably just get the 60's and maybe up grade the center to the larger one.

I might also look into some of the cutom wood colours or even high gloss?

The fan on the yamaha sounds like a great idea! I had thought about doing that even before I herd of Axiom speakers , I never liked the amount of heat the receiver gave off it had always been a concern.

The HTR 5660 has been a great beginner receiver with clean sound and good high power.Only wish now that it had more HD inputs! Who needs 6 S-video inputs!!! or composite {yellow ones ) I need 3 HDMI and 3 Component inputs! I'll upgrade to a better one once the HDMI comes down in price.

I was also wondering if anyone had gotton special pricing on say bulk speaker cable and banana plugs when they purchased their speakers from Axiom?

If you don't want to upgrade your receiver and want the M80ti's, why don't you just buy a 2 channel amp for the M80ti's?

It's an idea to toy with.

Just curious, why do you need 3 HDMI and 3 component inputs? 6 pieces of gear is sure a lot of different video gear to switch.
