When using the auto EQ with A Mic, does it matter what the volume setting is set to on the Sub when running the test?

On the Denons there is Auto Setup, which I believe your talking about. There is also Room EQ, that if turned on, will adjust various frequencies of your speakers to your room characteristics. I do not use Room EQ as it makes my m60's have to much treble/midrange sound. Alan from Axiom has mentioned many times to not use the EQ portion. By default it is turned off in the menu anyway.

To answer your question, I had the 350 before upgrading to the 500. I would put the volume about at the 10 or 11 o'clock position. When you run the setup, the dB level on the receiver will be adjusted based on the test tones, and most likely will be around -3dB's or so. If you have the sub gain lower, the receiver will be closer to 0dB's to get to the desired SPL.

Sorry for my rambling, hope it makes sense..

Randy, Thanks, makes perfect sense, I'm upgrading also and should get my EP500 within a couple days. I just want to make sure I have everything right before the new sub gets here. That way before I send the EP350 back I can do a fair comparison.

When you setup the 500, you have to put the volume at about the 7o'clock position. The orientation of the knob is differant on the 500.

On the 350 the Min. position was at about 7o'clock if I remember correctly, on the 500 it is at about the 4o'clock position.

I think from the error messages printed on page 25 of the manual that if the subwoofer volume is too high, you will get an "ERROR!" in the auto setup. If that happens, you will have to reduce the subwoofer volume. Also when you check the channel levels the subwoofer adjustment may be max'd out. Lower the volume and retry.

Michael, as the previous replies indicated, about the only significant point is that the setting on the sub level control when doing the auto-calibration shouldn't be such as to result in a receiver sub level setting close to the extremes. For example, if the result was -8dB or lower on the sub calibration, set the sub level control lower and re-run the auto-calibration so that the level on the receiver setting will come out closer to 0.

Thanks guys, I'll let you know how it sounds in a couple days. I'm really looking forward to getting the 500 up and running with my system.

The EP500's up and running , still doing a little tweeking, but Wow! In all fairness the EP350 is good, but its just not in the same class as the 500. This is definitely the best sub I've ever heard.

ditto on that comment. I also enjoyed my 350 very much, and it would serve most people with average sized rooms well. The 500 is a whole new animal.

One more question on Denon auto EQ, Ran setup with the EP500 set at the 7 oclock position on flat. Test tones are giving me a -5db on the sub. Should I turn down the sub more and run the test again?
