Axiom Home Page Forums General Discussion Stereo Has anyone upgraded from 60s to 80s?

If anyone has been down this road I would appreciate some feedback as to the subjective differences. Please keep in mind this is for a strictly 2-channel music system.

My buddy has a pair of M60's and I have M80's. I listened to his speakers for the first time on Saturday, my fisrt time hearing M60's. My first impression was that there is very little difference between the two models. After listening for half an hour or so, the only thing that sounded a little different was the low end. His bass actually sounded a little boomier to me, than my M80's. This could have been the room. I wonder if the M60's crossover is a little different, to compensate for one less driver. Maybe this makes it sound boomier??

Until I listen to them side by side, in the same room, there is no way to compare.

Hopefully in the next couple of weeks or so, we can get our speakers together and do a long awaited shootout.

I keep trying to convince him that the Axiom community is dying to know the results of our head to head comparision. If we can make it happen, I'll let you know what we find out. We live about 30 miles apart, so we can make it happen it's just a matter if time.

I want him to bring his speakers to my place because I have the full set up, subwoofer, surrounds. He just has the two channel setup.

So maybe if you guys cry out for this shootout to happen, it will help convince him (his name is Bob). He doesn't read this board, but I'll, make sure he see's it.

Axioms says they sound very similar and they do. Axiom says they can be played at insane levels and they can.

I started with 60s and upgraded to 80s. I had them both in the house at the same time. It was nice have 2 60s and 2 80s side by side.

The 80's have a slightly lower response, greater efficiency and different crossovers, 160 hz & 2.3 kHz as opposed to 200Hz & 2 kHz for the 60s

The 80s have a fuller sound at low volume compared to the 60s. As you go louder, they only get better. Enough mids and bass that you don't have to have a sub for music. BUT, the sub doesn't hurt either. I rarely listen louder than -15 on my Denon dial. Are they worth $340 more? Yes!

Thanks guys. I am happy to hear the 80s sound fuller at low volumes. As good as the 60s are, it does seem to take some nudging to get the bass to fill out. I've been looking at getting into some new speakers (currently have m60s), and can't find anything in the price range of the m80s that seem to get as much right as the m60s do. The imaging is where most everything I've heard doesn't even come close.

I'm no expert, but it is also my opinion that if the M60ti's have any short coming its at the lower end. I'm hoping that the EP500 will make that a moot point.

Although the lower end doesn't sound boomy to me in the least (although when I tried to add some base via my receiver it did sound coloured).

Just doesn't seem to push enough volume of air for my taste, however the EP500 should make that issue go away.

The mids and highs though the M60ti are better than a some of the other much higher priced speakers.
