Hi All,

I have a question about receiver setup.

When setting up my Yamaha RX-V2600 it goes through the auto setup and I was wondering should I use the eq or not? And why is the speaker output set above the zero line mine are set from +1db to +8dm? Should I reset them all to zero (flat)?

Thanks

I use my Auto Setup, but don't use the EQ part. The Auto Setup will adjust your delay (distances), and levels (dB's) of each speaker to the primary listening position. When you run the test you want the microphone to be placed about ear level in the primary listening position. A tripod is best so your not in the way. Each speaker will vary depending on its location and the room environment, the auto setup will adjust each speakers dB level so they are all the same SPL.

The Eq adjusts the various frequencies, so it might bump up the midrange or treble frequencies. I have found this makes my 60's sound worse, and I don't use the EQ.

John, when you're mentioning the +1db or +8dB on some of the speakers, I assume that you mean the overall sound level calibration rather than boosts at certain frequencies resulting from room equalization. If so, those settings should be left at the auto-calibration levels, so that the sound levels at the listening position are balanced.

If you were referring instead to boosts to equalize certain frequencies, you have to judge the results. In assisting a colleague in setting up a new 2400 a couple of years ago, our judgment was that the equalization(using the low frequency emphasis which was an option on that unit)was helpful. Others have reported different results.
