I can't decide on a receiver! Buying the 80/500 system and a little concerned with the 4 ohm thing. I like to listen loud. Will be 60 movies/40 music.
considering receivers from pioneer elite, yamaha, and denon.
I can't tell much of a difference in sound between the yamaha and denon's I have auditioned. So mainly considering price, features and dependapility. I have always thought of pioneer as being a more consumer grade brand, but the specs on the vsx-72txvi look pretty good. If I am running a 5.1 system it says I can biamp the extra two channels.....Does this mean I am doubling the wattage to the channels that are biamped? Is this something to consider with the m80's or will they be fine with the 120-140 wats these receivers put out.

I believe the consensus around these parts is the Denon will probably handle the 4 ohm loads a little easier than the Yamamaha...somebody with more knowledge will be chiming in here after the Super Bowl, I suspect.

If you want to be safe with running the M80s I would suggest you go with the Denon. Normally the folks at Axiom doesn't recommend the Pioneer or Yamaha for the M80s.

As to the biamping, no you will not double the power going to the speakers. You would still be getting the rated output of which ever receiver you get.

i know that with the denon 3805 you can use the rear surround channels to bi-amp your fronts, giving you 120 watts for the upper freq and 120 for the lower, instructions on how to do that can be found here:

Yes it is true and has be discussed here a few times. It still does not give one double the power to the speakers. It's no different than just leaving the binding post straps in place. With the straps in place you still get the rated power to the upper and lower section of the speaker.

I have been leaning towards the 3806. Look's like I will be going that route. I was mainly worried about it being able to handle 4ohm loads at high volumes.

There is a few members running the Denon with the M80s. They report good results.

Denon and HK will have no problems with the 80's. Or you could go with seperates from Rotel, Outlaw, etc... There have been a few people that have had issues with other brands driving 80's. As long as you get the bells and whistles your looking for in a AVR receiver as far as surround decoding you will be fine.

Don't get hooked up on how many watts a receiver puts out, that is really not the most important factor. I have many friends with HK receivers with 70 watts per channel or less, and they will play to any satisfying level. In my opinion, you want to look for a high current design that is full bandwidth rated, for ex., 100 watts per channel 20hz - 20 khz. Many companies claim 130 watts or more, but are only rated at on frequency.

If you still are interested in one of the other receivers, don't forget about the m60ti's, they sound very similar to the 80's and fill my 900 sq ft room with no problems.

The 80's are very efficient. The 3806 will handle them.

Pete, another welcome. The 3806 would be an excellent choice, but there should be little concern about 4 ohm loads with the latest models of any of the brands which you mentioned. The testing indicates substantial output into 4 ohms is available.
