We currently have 2 QS8s being used for rear speakers, M60ti for fronts and a VP150 for center. We want to add 2 surrounds but the problem is the room is part of an open floor plan so the wiring is on the ceiling. We don't want "in-ceiling" but we need "on-ceiling" mounting. There is no way to wall mount the surrounds since there aren't "walls" available.

Unfortunately, I don't know how close to studs the wiring is since it was done prior to us moving in but I suspect there will be suitable mounting options for brackets of some type.

Suggestions?

Omnimount makes a mount that some have used for the Qs8's, not sure how much room it allows for the top driver. I used some shelf brackets I got at Menards, I like them as they have a plastic cover that hides the wires. I just screwed it up into the raftors. You could get a stud finder to find your studs in the ceiling.

Most home improvement stores have wiremold or cable raceways with adhesive backing that can be attached to a ceiling. I bought some on http://www.cableorganizer.com There are various sized available and should come in a color that will match your ceiling, they are even paintable.

Below are some pics of my Q mountings, and one shows the tracking that my Component and HDMI/DVI cables run to my projector. The plastic tracking also worked out as a good divider from my blue HT ceiling to the rest of the room...

Not sure if you are asking about a speaker mounting option or running cabling.

Randy (Sirquack) has a very nice setup for his QS8s hung from his ceiling. Very slick. Obviously he prewired but still, it looks like a tricky install.

If you do not have speaker wire installed, there are a few options but most will be "destructive". Cutting holes at various points in the ceiling to run wire and finding cross braces between joists (or cutting a whole strip of ceiling to drill all joists depending on their orientation). A fish-wire would then be used to pull the wire. Non destructive would be installing flat-wire that can be painted over unless you have a stipple or "popcorn" ceiling finish.

Always cool to see those little technical details coming out. A very neat (tidy) install, Randy.

When it's in context to a question a person has, Yes.

It's not like it's taking up any bandwidth getting to your computer -- it's taken up permanent residence in all out browser caches.

Thanks for posting that image! I was wading though some old posts but hadn't seen it before and it gives me a good idea of how the speakers will look.

The room is already wired (speaker terminals on the ceiling) so I just have to find some good mounts (those brackets sure don't look like shelf brackets). I didn't want to place the order until I was sure I could use the Qs on the ceiling.
