Hi everyone-

Just curious to hear if anyone had purchased a set of M60's in the past and felt that they needed to upgrade to the M80's at some point afterward. I'm still kicking around which set to purchase as I'm here saving my money, and since I've never heard either set (only heard the M22's that my dad has), I'm curious to learn as much as I can about both of the 60's and the 80's, which is leading me to ask if anyone felt the need to upgrade to the bigger 80's.

My living room is not small by any means, but I don't have the exact dimensions. I'm sure I wouldn't be dissatisfied if I got the 60's, but I always seem to have this thought in the back of my head that I should just go for the 80's from the start. If anyone has any opinions on both sets of speakers (regardless of the upgrade from one to the other, too), I'd love to hear them.

Thanks again,
Kevin

I somehow recall Ian saying once that the M80s have a longer bass extension and play louder than the M60s, but that was about it.
If you couple an M60 with a sub, which most ppl do anyway, i don't think you would be kicking yourself b/w that and the M80s choice.
But they are larger and may therefore have a macho, mine is bigger than yours kinda thing to them as well.

Just how big is your space?

Yes, and I also understand that the M80 needs bigger "breathing room" -- meaning, its minimum recommended listening distance is longer than the M60.

An upgrade from the M60s to the M80s may be more than just the difference in speaker price. Suggest you review your receivers capability to handle the 4-ohm impedance of the M80s.

I originally was going to get the M80s but the 4 ohm thing was bugging me. Joe at Axiom told me they sound about the same except as Chesseroo noted above. I love the M60s and they have been playing all day, every day, for the past 3 weeks. Two trays of CDs per day, and a movie 4 nights out of the week. I'd like to have the M80s, but with that much play time maybe I made the right choice?

i dont think the amount of play time would affect it. Either it can handle 4 ohms and will be fine for however long you play music. or it cant and thats it. lol.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate all the help.

I'm running NAD seperates, opposed to a receiver. There's no problem with my amp pushing a 4 ohm load, so that's covered if I choose to go with the 80's.

I listen to primairly two-channel stereo. My current setup doesn't have a sub, either, (the LFE switch is set to have the bass channeled to the main left and right speakers, opposed to the sub) and I have no complaints about the bass. I have a feeling that the 60's would probably be fine without a sub on my set-up from what I'm hearing here. I tend to find subs to be overpowering in cases of two-channel stereo and even most home theaters. I am sure I'll be upsetting the neighbors if I added a sub to my setup with either the 60's or the 80's.

So far, I'm thinking the 60's would do me just fine, unless anyone can prove otherwise.

As always, I appreciate the help. Keep those thoughts comming if you have any.

-Kevin

I love my M60s, but...
-if $ is not an issue why not get the M80s?
-if your receiver isn't going to overheat, why not get the M80s?
-if you're not going to run a sub, why not get the M80s?

Some folks might call it compensating, but when have you ever regretted getting the biggest, best, or fastest of anything?

And if you're into psychobabble, is it better to rationalize your purchase of M60s or be the penis-envy-king and get the M80s?

I faced the same decision aproximately 4 months ago. After going through nearly all of the pertinant posts on this message board aswell as professional reviews, I went with the M80's from the outlet($950).

My decision was ultimately based on my preferance for listening to music through 2 channels and the M80's ability to reach deeper base responses compared to M60's.
I also have M22'+ SW (comprable to M60's) and did an A/B comparison with M80's and concluded that the M80's are more dynamic and lively, the 2 more drivers and larger cabinet seems to give it bigger sound, they are also not as placement sensitive as is often mentioned.

Besides being very pleased that my M80's are the best A/V purchase I've made thus far, I definately agree with Ian that their the best speakers his ever made.
Good luck.
