"Answering yourself" won't be bad. BUT, if you start insulting yourself, quoting yourself out of context, accusing yourself of saying what you didn't actually say, and arguing 2pi and 4pi with yourself, I'll send for the guys in the white coats.

Leeroy, none of us know the amount of power that your setup will need. This will depend largely on how loud an average level you'd be playing at and how wide of a dynamic range the program material would have. At this point keep in mind that your EP600's amplifier will take a substantial part of the burden off the internal amplifier channels in whatever receiver you get(this is actually a form of active biamping). At this point it would seem to be premature to assume that the combination of the receiver and EP600 amps would be inadequate for your needs. Therefore I'd suggest that you consider(especially since you mention room EQ)the new Denon 2807 or HK 640 which are just coming out, which have what are generally considered the most advanced receiver EQ systems. If in the future it should come about that you actually need more power, you could then spend the money on a separate two-channel amplifier(at least 300 watts to make a significant difference) to drive the M80s from the pre-outs on the receiver.

This is too funny. I am 4PiMan at home, and craigsub at my office.

I must be missing something here (as with that whole AVS thing that was dragged here):

Since everybody now knows that you are Craigsub, why not just post under that name?

Hi! I'm the guy in the white coat! Well, not literally, as it usually scares patients a bit. I go more for the dressy casual look.

Anyway, if I need to give anybody a look under the hood, give me a buzz... For now I presume 4PiMan/craigsub to be sane. After all, one has to have someone intelligent to talk to, right, 4Pi?

Despite my desire for Emotivas, I find my Denon 3805 with my Outlaw M200s fills the bill for now.

Are separate pre/pros sonically better than receivers? Depends on the listener. Check out the Outlaw and AV123 forums for opinions on their and other equipment. Lots of good things on this forum as well.

IMHO the amps made a difference in the sound of my 80s at all listening levels.

For the price range you gave, there are a lot of options out there. There are lots of options for less money as well.

Go shopping. See what features you like.

Outlaw and AV123 are like Axiom when it comes to 30 day trials. Listening at home on your equipment is a great thing.

Good listening!

I am, as a general rule, sane. Isn't there a saying that the patient is the last to know ?

Anyway, I am in the office now - when I get home tonight, I need to log out, the log back in as craigsub on that computer once, then the "cookies" thing takes over. I think.

4PiMan will live on, though. Ian and Amie, Jack, and a few others know why ...

He just won't post very often.

Spent a couple of hours down
at my hi fi shop. With out leading
the sales person too much he basically
sugested the same thing as JohnK. Hold out for the
new Denon 2807 ( Available april in
australia) and if thats not enough power
for the m80ti's then upgrade with a power
amp later. Sounds like the Denon 2807 will
have all the top end features except an THX
rating which is probably bull anyway.

Leeroy, congrats on the purchase! You should be very happy with the 80/600 combo. I'm driving mine with a middle of the road Yamaha receiver in a very large open layout with 16ft ceilings. It's OK for now, but when funds permit a power amp is the first purchase.

The one aspect I really like regarding separates is that if an amp self destructs, all you need to buy is a new amp. Also, they typically have much more current than an all in one box system such as AVR’s.

Also, as technology changes, it is generally centered around the processor, and not the power end. You can always upgrade the processor, sell your old one on eBay and still use the old power amps.

You can go with a two channel 200 watt amp for the mains, and another five channel 75 watt amp for the rest of the speakers as the mains are all you are really concerned with haveing plenty of current.

You can get yourself a pretty good Rotel combo for your budget amount. Lots of us have Rotel/Axiom set ups here. Very robust and clean power with a five year warrantee.

………just some thoughts to ponder.
