My new Denon 2106 should be here Monday and I've been reading the manual that I downloaded about the auto setup where you use the little mic. Is this the best way to go about the setup,does that really work? Sounds like a nice feature if it really works, but I don't want to be wasting my time with it if it doesn't. Thanks!

The auto setup in my opinion works great. You can always fine tune after for your tastes. What's nice is if you move things around you can auto setup again and it takes only minutes.

RT, keep in mind that there're two separate features involved in the use of the microphone that comes with your 2106. The first is automatic calibration of speaker sound levels and distances. This works very well and is likely to give results that are as least as accurate(and for the sub more accurate)as you'd get if you bought a separate sound meter(about $40)and did a manual calibration.

The second feature is room equalization which attempts to compensate for peaks caused by room acoustics. This is more controversial; some have reported a significant improvement, while others have said that it sounded worse. Since you'll have the option to use it or not, you should experiment with the automatic or manual equalization settings to see what results you get in your room.

Yes, run the calibration first, then play with the Eq, I leave mine off.

If you are using Axiom speakers, Allen suggests that the equalization be set to off or flat. I asked that question a month or so ago.

I have the 2805 Denon and started with the Auto Setup and then verified everything with a Radio Shack analog SPL meter. The settings were pretty good, I did tweek them somewhat.

In regards to the Room EQ stuff, I currently leave this feature off. In the beginning I had it on, and thought everything sounded pretty good. I'm guessing it was because Axiom speakers are so great. However, I know leave it off, andhave found I like the sound better this way. With it on, it emphasized the midrange frequencies to much. I don't think Axiom speakers need any help, the are simply wonderful.

It does work but you need to double check the result setting, in particular the distances and the levels.

If the distances are close to the real measured ones and if the decibel levels are not wildly changing from band to band then it's probably OK.

If, on the other hand, the distances are way off and the levels changing from +5db to -5 db its probably the system is trying to correct for strong resonances and I don't think it's sophisticated enough to do it correctly. In this case I would leave all the settings on default.

It's also a good idea to do the auto setup with the mike placed at a couple of other places, couple of feet away from each other and compare the results.
