what's up everyone? i'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what to do in raleigh? we're moving there this year and thought we'd take a trip down to check out the sights & such.

i know deals gap is west (for you motorcycle riders), but unfortunately driving the busa in 25 degree pittsburgh weather is not going to happen.

anyway, where are the good eats down there? anybody know anything about the bars/nightlife/cool spots in the day also?

Peteswrx,
well, despite having never been to Raleigh and not really knowing anything about the city, i've stil got a great suggestion:

Carolina Hurricanes

If you are at all a fan of hockey, Carolina is one of the best teams in the league this year - standings. As you can see, 2nd in the Eastern Conference and everything i've heard is that they are a fun hockey team to watch. Add to that we're getting down to the last handful of games in the regular season so depending on when you leave, you might even be able to catch a playoff game.

Other than that, i have got nothing of value to offer. Good luck with your move.

I used to live in Greenville, NC, a couple of hours east of Raleigh. If you're a basketball fan, you will be in prime ACC country, with NC State in Raleigh, UNC in Chapel Hill just a few (15-20, maybe?) miles to the norhtwest and Duke just 8 miles west of UNC.

The Duke Botanical gardens in Durham are very nice. In the 1990s, Chapel Hill was a mecca of young bands, ala Seattle, Austin, or Athens GA. Don't know if that still holds.

Don't know about the nightlife. With our newborn, the night life we see now is Carraba's, Olive Garden, etc... Actually, I will be meeting some family in Raleigh on the weekend of April 8, as it's halfway between us (northern VA) and them (Georgia).

Oh, and there's a nice outlet mall on I-95 between exits 95 and 97. It's about 30 miles east of Raleigh.

Just my $.02 of ramblings...

thanks for the replies fellas.

i should have been more clear - "nightlife" to us is basically nice resturants and a good movie theater. I'm basically looking for a clean city, with lots of good shopping, newer looking buildings, nicely landscaped suburban type neighborhoods. you all know what i'm talking about

i'm in pittsburgh now, which is a dirty old town filled with too many old people and old ways of thinking (racism, women not equal to men, etc..). a change of scenery would be nice.

To rephrase the old joke, so you're looking for "two pickets OUT of Tittsburgh"

Do you like barbecue? If so, then you will be in heaven, especially if you like pulled or diced pork "Carolina style", which is with a vinegar sauce. You won't be able to swing a dead 'possum without hitting a good BBQ joint.

Actually, the dead 'possum is sometimes listed separately on the menu, under "Flatmeat"
